zfs - filesystem versus directory
Folks, While going through a quick tutorial on zfs, I came across a way to create zfs filesystem within a filesystem. For example: # zfs create mytest/peter where mytest is a zpool filesystem. When does this way, the new filesystem has the mount point as /mytest/peter. When does it make sense to create such a filesystem versus just creating a directory? # mkdir mytest/peter Thank you in

Any zfs fault injection tools?
Folks, Command "zpool status" reports disk status that includes read errors, write errors, and checksum errors. These values have always been 0 in our test environment. Is there any tool out there that can corrupt the state? At the very least, we should be able to write to the disk directly and mess up the checksum. Thank you in advance for your help. Perhaps slightly OT - Lots of spurious webdav requests.
Hello All, I am running a CentOS 4.6 file server for a small office network and I am getting a lot of strange webdav requests from one of the Windows workstations - I have not configured Webdav on the Windows host (hereafter "windows-laptop") in question. Some details - I have configured a Samba share called (say) "share1" on the CentOS server and the windows-laptop connects

[cifs-discuss] Disk quotas with CIFS & ZFS
There''s not much that CIFS can do as far as user quotas go without filesystem support. I''ve CC''ed zfs-discuss, somebody there might be able to provide you something useful. Afshin Ross wrote: > Not sure if this is the best place to ask about this. I know ZFS doesn''t have user quotas, but is there any chance something like this could be added to CIFS? >

[storage-discuss] ZFS iscsi snapshot - VSS compatible?
I don''t know if VSS has this capability, but essentially if it can temporarily quiesce a device like a data base does for "warm standby" then a snapshot should work. This would be a very simple Windows side script/batch: 1) Q-Disk 2) Remote trigger snapshot 3) Un Q-Disk I have no idea where to even begin researching VSS unfortunately... Upgrade from UFS Sol 10u5 to ZFS Sol 10u6/OS 2008.11[SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Hi ZFS gods, I have a x4500 I wish to upgrade from a SVM UFS Sol 10u5 to a ZFS rpool 10u6 or Opensolaris. Since I know (via backing up my sharetab) what shares I need to have (all nfs share - no cifs on this 4500 - YAY) and have organised downtime for this server, would it be easier for me to go to Solaris 10u6 (or opensolaris) by just installing from scratch and re-importing the ZPOOL

Status of Samba/ZFS integration
I''ve tried to set up a SAMBA file server that acts completely identical with a Microsoft Windows 2000 or 2003 one. First of all, the problem with the ACI ordering is simple: The Microsoft ACI specification imposes that the DENY ACIs are put on top. It can be solved with a simple chmod. Problem no.2 the Samba NFSv4 ACL module doesn''t interpret owner@, group@, everyone at . While

zfs under medium load causes SMB to delay writes
This is not the appropriate group/list for this message. struggling with simple webdav
Normally I use authzldap to authenticate LDAP users but in this case, I have a client that wants non-LDAP users to be able to use DAV. The twist is that there are several virtual hosts on this server and perhaps that is confusing things... anyway, my httpd.conf has... <Location /webdav> Dav On AllowOverride None Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AuthType Basic AuthName

panic after zfs mount
Dear all We ran into a nasty problem the other day. One of our mirrored zpool hosts several ZFS filesystems. After a reboot (all FS mounted at that time an in use) the machine paniced (console output further down). After detaching one of the mirrors the pool fortunately imported automatically in a faulted state without mounting the filesystems. Offling the unplugged device and clearing the fault

How to enable WebDAV/HTTP/FTP access and the REST/XML API?
Gluster supports client access with a native client, cifs and nfs and, according to this document http://www.raidinc.com/pdf/whitepapers/wp-gluster-vm-environments.pdf, WebDAV, HTTP and FTP. How can I enable the at last mentioned features? Furthermore I am interested in how to access the advertised REST Api? In the documentation there is not even one result when searching and I get the impression

Migrating ZFS/data pool to new pool on the same system
Can anyone confirm my action plan is the proper way to do this? The reason I''m doing this is I want to create 2xraidz2 pools instead of expanding my current 2xraidz1 pool. So I''ll create a 1xraidz2 vdev, migrate my current 2xraidz1 pool over, destroy that pool and then add it as a 1xraidz2 vdev to the new pool. I''m running b130, sharing both with CIFS and ISCSI (not

Samba server as a WebDAV proxy
Dear all, As you may know, webdav support is quiet poor on Windows, compared to Samba. That is why I would like the samba server to act as a proxy to webdav servers. This would give windows users the ability to browse webdav pseudo-shares and map them to a drive letter, without buying software like "WebDrive". I am setting up a quick and dirty "proof of concept" software,

Export ZFS via ISCSI to Linux - Is it stable for production use now?
Hello, I want to setup an opensolaris for centralized storage server, using ZFS as the underlying FS, on a RAID 10 SATA disks. I will export the storage blocks using ISCSI to RHEL 5 (less than 10 clients, and I will format the partition as EXT3) I want to ask... 1. Is this setup suitable for mission critical use now? 2. Can I use LVM with this setup? Currently we are using NFS as the

ZFS partially hangs when removing an rpool mirrored disk while having some IO on another pool on another partition of the same disk
Hello, Sorry for the (very) long subject but I''ve pinpointed the problem to this exact situation. I know about the other threads related to hangs, but in my case there was no < zfs destroy > involved, nor any compression or deduplication. To make a long story short, when - a disk contains 2 partitions (p1=32GB, p2=1800 GB) and - p1 is used as part of a zfs mirror of rpool

ZFS encryption?? - [Fwd: [osol-announce] SXCE Build 105 available
It was rumored that Nevada build 105 would have ZFS encrypted file systems integrated into the main source. In reviewing the Change logs (URL''s below) I did not see anything mentioned that this had come to pass. Its going to be another week before I have a chance to play with b105. Does anyone know specifically if b105 has ZFS encryption? Thanks, Jerry -------- Original Message
