HABTM: deleting records based on attributes
Hello All, I am new to ROR, and can''t seem to get HABTM to cooperate entirely... however I might be abusing it! Before I try a different strategy I thought I''d ask here and see if I''m missing something simple. So say Projects and Companies are related. Projects can have multiple Companies, and Companies can be on multiple Projects. But, the same Company can also

ids writer fields for HABTM relationship.
Hello forum readers, Let''s say i have two models: Person and Role (i replicated the problem with Post & Tag as well, as i thought the problem was linked to some application-specific rights problem, but it wasn''t). In Person, attr_accessible role_ids is declared, so it accepts an array of Role ids as an argument when creating / updating. If i fire up the rails console and

question/problem with habtm and "include?"
I have what I feel is a standard habtm association to manage user/roles/permissions. However, I''m having a small problem wondering why ".include?" isn''t working like I thought it should. I''m attempting to use this to determine whether a user has access to a particular permission: if session[:user].role.permissions.include?(''Lead List'')

creating fixtures for has_many :through
I''m stymied at how to create a fixture that establishes a has_many :through relationship. I''ve watched the railscast at: http://media.railscasts.com/videos/081_fixtures_in_rails_2.mov ... but that''s for HABTM relationships. I''ve read: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/145676 but that ultimately doesn''t answer any question. So with no further ado:

To Chris Hall - Re: DB Modelling the Rails way - Opinions??
Chris, Finally got time to fully play with your suggestions. Had to re-code a bit of stuff but the concept works - just like a bought one :~). Many thanks for the solution, Kind Regards, Eric. For those curious - here''s what it was about; On Monday 02 January 2006 02:10, Eric Sloane tried to type something like: > Hi, > I''m trying to figure the most efficient way to

HABTM and has_many through only work in one direction
I have two models that have a habtm relationship and it only seems to be working in one direction. The two models are "recipe" and "msn_lifestyles_feed" with a join table called "msn_lifestyles_feeds_recipes" the tables for msn_lifestyles_feed and msn_lifestyles_feeds_recipes are in the same database and the recipe table is in a completely different database. When

HABTM vs. using has_many :through
All, I''ve heard recently about has_many :through as a necessary alternative to HABTM (when the join table has it''s own id column, say, in a legacy schema). However, is the prevailing Rails wisdom now that one should use has_many :through in _all_ cases? If so, why? Thanks, Wes -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

converting from HABTM to has_many :through
Hello, I have a has_and_belongs_to_many relationship that I''ve realized I need to add additional attributes to. So I''m converting it to a has_many :through (HMT) relationship. This is the first time I''ve used an HMT, and it seems like I''m using too much code. I couldn''t figure out how to get the join model objects to update automatically as a result of

HABTM -VS- belongs_to/has_many, for self-referential joins
Ok, David says on page 241 that sometimes a many-to-many relation with attributes are better implemented as an actual model instead of using HABTM. Well, I''ve got that situation and I can''t figure it out. All of the examples in the book have HABTM examples between 2 different tables, but I want to have a HABTM relation on 1 table with itself. (e.g., if I have a table Things,

What is has_many :through really buying you over HABTM?
So having just learned how to do has_many :through as opposed to HABTM, and then, being concerned that I wouldn''t get it to work, I started thinking about these two approaches. It seems to me that the _only_ problem that the HM:T (has_many :through) approach solves that HABTM doesn''t is the issue of the potential collision of id columns between your join table and one of

HABTM query return all results
I have a role-based authorization system exactly like the one from Rails Recepies. I am looking to return all rights however in my view I want to highlight the rights that are associated with the currently selected role (passed in through @params[:id]). Schema: create_table "rights", :force => true do |t| t.column "name", :string t.column "controller",

finder_sql issue with has_many :through
I have an inner join query that Action Record can''t seem to pull off conventionally, so I''m trying to use :finder_sql to utilize an sql query that works beautifully in SQL. The problem is, when I try to call the method, I get the following: private method `gsub'' called for #<Array:0x267de04> Here is my has_many code: has_many :mod_privileges,

habtm vs. has_many/belongs_to
In AWDWR David says (pg 232), "When a Join Wants to Be a Model: While a many-to-many relation with attributes can often seem like the obvious choice, it?s often a mirage for a missing domain model. When it is, it can be advantageous to convert this relationship into a real model and decorate it with a richer set of behavior. This lets you accompany the data with methods. As an example,

has_many :through and foreign key parameters
I just took my HABTM and turned it into a :through since my join table has another "non-joiny" attribute. I went from this: has_many_and_belongs_to :jobs, :join_table => ''tablename'', :foreign_key => ''x'', :association_foreign_key => ''y'' to this: has_many :jobs, :through =>

Naming rights_roles join model using has_many :through and polymorphic associations
Hi. I have a couple of best practices questions regarding polymorphic associations, naming join tables and user permissions. Currently I have implemented the user authentication model from the rails recipes book. Basically it goes something like this: MODEL CLASSES: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :roles end class Role < ActiveRecord::Base

HABTM join table quirk
I''ve been bringing up a good basica framework for applications at work. To give decent security I''ve been implementing the Rails Recipie for Authorization of function calls modeled on the book''s implementation. (Changes for our environment were added..but are minor.) Since I initially let Rails create the join table between two data tables with a HABTM relationship....I

Association data clobbering (foreign keys too?)
Can someone please confirm or correct the following statements? If I have the following tables create table as (id int, [...], b_id int); create table bs (id int, [...], a_id int); create table as_bs (a_id int, b_id int); and the associations woould be defined like this class A << ... habtm :bs belongs_to :b end so my Model A has a habtm collection of Bs *plus* a direct

DB Modelling the Rails way - Opinions??
Hi, I''m trying to figure the most efficient way to model the following. I can think of at least two ways to relate the tables but from a client/server perspective! I''m wondering how to best (and elegantly)relate them from an AR perspective. A project has many people, A person can work on many projects at any time, A project has many roles, A role is performed by a person, A

habtm and also has_many of the same things
Hi, our app is a situation where users can upload files and also mark files uploaded by other users as their favorites. So for the favorites we are using a simple many-to-many with a tie table. So in attempting that it looks like class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :media_file has_many :media_file end class MediaFile < ActiveRecord::Base
