A good tutorial
Are there any other tutorial than "Agile Web Development with Rails" that you can suggest? So far I can''t say that RoR has been easy to learn. :-) -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

PHPonRails ?
I''ve have a very tight schedule project that MUST (not my option), be developed in PHP. Is there a Rails based framework for this platform? I like the Rails way of things, but in this case, I cannot choose the programming language, so please don''t offend me :-) Thanks in advance, Alessandro _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list

How dows RoR work?
This is so frustrating. Is RoR that easy to learn or is it hype or is it just me? I wonder how many newbies like me are surfing the docs trying to get a clue of the basics. Every tutorial I find is much the same, and seems to skip the fundmental parts. How should you understand the Ruby API http://api.rubyonrails.org/? What is < ActionController::Base? Why Ruby on Rails
Our company is mainly made up off application developers but we have a lot of web work coming up so we are deciding which route to take at the moment. We initially identfied ASP.NET 2.0 with the ATLAS AJAX framework because of the RAD features, easy to learn etc. I had read some stuff on ROR and our Boss who is open minded allowed me to create a sample application with ROR. He was impressed

Rails versus PHP in complex HTML/CSS
I have done a bunch of Rails stuff on my own and my company uses PHP. I often have to integrate very complex HTML/CSS into PHP. I know that the PHP looks more closer to the HTML than Rails because Rails has alot of link_to and other macro like calls that generate alot of stuff that you don''t see in the template. I am wondering if that could make it any tricker to generate the complex sort

Begining with RoR, litle questions
Hello, First, sorry about my english. I come from lamp+symfony world, i understand the MVC design and so on... my questions... 1. Should learn ruby 100% before entering the documentation for RoR? 2. Works with apache as module? 3. What about DB abstraction? something similar to PDO in php? Appreciate a few links in addition to the official. In short, a little guidance of where to start PD:

Rails: Good for everything?
My department is in a battle right now. We have some very por PHP people and very pro Rails people. The php guys make a good argument that Rails is good for new applications where we dictate the DB schema. PHP shines where we go into an existing application, or a new one where multiple databases or possibly legacy systems are involved. The PHP guys basically say Rails is good for Web 2.0

Which is better for production: MySQL5 or PostGres8.1?
I''m coming from an Oracle and SQL Server background. I''d like to use OpenSource for my next RoR project. MySQL5.x and Postgres8.1 seem to be the most popular. I''d like some comments on which would be the better choice for a production environment and why. Here are my initial concerns in order of priority: 1. Works well with RoR. ( migrations, etc) 2. Stable enough

Table names
Can I use the table name "adm_users" (mysql)? Will that give the model name "adm_user"? Or should it be "admusers" and "admuser"? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Don''t understand :: in ActionController::Base
Maybe this should apply to Ruby forums directly, but I''ll try here. I understand the concept of classes and subclasses thanks to the excellent "Programming Ruby - The Pragmatic Programmer''s Guide". However, I don''t understand what :: signify in terms of inheritance, parent and child in e.g. ActionController::Base -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

rspec + CakePHP
Hi, I am in a situation where I am going to have to rewrite a working Ruby on Rails application in CakePHP with PHP5. I have a whole bunch of specs written with rspec, and I was wondering if it would be possible to somehow use these specs to test the Models and Controllers that I am rewriting in CakePHP. I am going to be basically just exactly duplicating the Rails application, with identical

ADVICE: Generating unique identifiers for later DB insertion
All, I have an ActiveRecord object that I need to be able to uniquely identify _before_ I actually save the object (I may not end up saving the object based on conditions). This is because I want to use the ID in another context (a file name in the filesystem). Depending on conditions, I may or may not need to do a lot of stuff between the time that I generate the object ID and actually

Starting on the Ruby Rails path
Hi all, I''m a web designer/-developer. I found Ruby and Ruby on Rails, and as I can understand (for now) this is what I''ve been looking for. I''m really exited about this. Prior to this I''ve used Lasso and PHP. But a few questions (sitting on Mac OS 10.4.6). I tried to install according to this:

Types of apps to use Rails for?
I am a web developer using PHP and very limited JavaScript. I keep hearing about RoR and am interested in learning it, but before I make the jump I''d like to hear about the types of applications I should be using it for. On all the tutorials you see big apps like stores, social networking, shopping carts, etc. I don''t have any immediate plans to be building something that

One Lighttpd or many?
I''m trying to get Lighttpd started, and understand how it works (not quite there yet with Ror). Some questions: 1) Can I run Lighttpd as a main server instead of Apache2? 2) When hosting different RoR projetcs, will there be one server for each? Or is it one server running all? 2) Can it do everything Apache can? Like PHP, webdav, etc? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

File manipulation
What are the possibilities of file manipulation in RoR? How do you create a .html or .rhtml file with ruby to be placed in the public folder, with custom content? Btw, where is RoR root? Is that ''public''? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.
