dbmail benchmarking
I thought I'd try benchmarking with dbmail (v2.2.4) to see how much slower a SQL backend could actually be. Skip to bottom for the conclusions. Originally I ran the tests with the databases being in XFS filesystem. MySQL's performance was horrible. It went 3-7x faster with ext3. MySQL 5.0.30 backend (innodb): ./imaptest clients=1 - append=100 seed=1 secs=30 msgs=1000000 logout=0

So, what about clustering and load balancing?
Hello world, so, with beta2 of Dovecot 2.0 being available, what is the preferred way to achieve load balancing and fault tolerance? As far as I can see it, there are basically two options: 1) Use a HA shared storage, export either a cluster filesystem or NFS, and have your dovecot servers mount that file system. Load balance these servers (Cisco ACE, ldirectord, ...) and there you go. Overall

Replication plans
Several companies have been interested in getting replication support for Dovecot. It looks like I could begin implementing it in a few months after some other changes. So here's how I'm planning on doing it: What needs to be replicated: - Saving new mails (IMAP, deliver) - Copying existing mails - Expunges - Flag and keyword changes - Mailbox creations, deletions and renames -

"encoder_example" segfaulting...(and a couple of other questions)
I picked up the imported Feb 2005 issue of "Linux Format", in part for the Theora article...and I was pleasantly surprised to see my mouldering old "Ogg-Theora Micro-howto[1]" document referenced. I figured that meant people might still be finding it useful, so I felt it was time to dust it off and update it. I also noticed that archive.org now has a small but growing

Insert .eps files in to an R plot.
Hello Everybody, I have an eps figure an awesome bacteria and a plot (generated using R) also in eps format. Now it looks like there is space for only one figure and I have to insert the picture of the bacteria into the plot. Is there a way to insert figures (eps/png/jpg) in to plots (may be control over placement of figures in the plot as well?) ? By plots I mean data represented using axes and

Hi all, Almost wish I had something more exciting to say regarding the 5.6 to 5.7 upgrade, but it just worked flawlessly. Physical as well as virtual machines. redrawing X11 devices
Hi, One thing that has always puzzled me using R, via Emacs/ESS on Debian, is how the graphics windows get (or don't get) redrawn. At the moment I've got four different X11() windows open, arranged to all fit on the screen at the same time. However, I have no idea how to get them all redrawn consistently. What I mean is, if I now switch focus from my main Emacs window to one of the

The ticket clinic, What Is U.S. Copyright Law?
The ticket clinic, What Is U.S. Copyright Law? The US Copyright Law grants rights to individuals for the works they create. The US Copyright Act of 1790 has changed over the years. The current basis of US copyright law is based on the Copyright Act of 1976. US copyright law is relatively automatic. Once someone has an idea and produces it in tangible form, the creator is the copyright holder and

How can I run package ca (correspondence analysis), which needs rgl, without X11?
I want to invoke R on a Linux Web server from Java, in order to analyse data in ways that would take too long to code, and run too slowly, in Java. In particular, to do correspondence analyses. To this end, I've installed R version 2.15.0 on my Web host's x86_64 GNU/Linux machine, and tried using package "ca" to run the "author" example of correspondence analysis

CentOS5 Desktops authenticating to 389 Directory Server
Hi Everyone. I am doing some LDAP testing. I have setup a 389 Directory Server on CentOS 5 and using the default schema I have populated it with a couple of users. I then did the configuration on the client that I thought was needed to make it authenticate. To test this I expected to be able to use id <uidNumber> of a user I had defined. But I get id: 1001: No such user id: 5001: No

TAG-mess
Hi, <p>here's my €0.02 on that topic. First of all, all those new tags are total overkill to be standardized. They're only useful for people who both tag OGG files for a living and listen to classical music only. Imagine what will happen when the Jazz fans, and the Techno fans, and the Rock fans and who knows else demands his very own, customized + standardized set of tags. And

Re: +AFs-Asterisk-Users+AF0- RE: +AFs-Asterisk-Users+AF0- Multi-line, multi-registration phones
Here is an example of a couple of macros that help me where I have a SOHO with a home phone line and a work phone line. If I pick up line 2 my work line I would prefer the call I make to go out my office phone line same with if I pick up line 1 my home phone line I would prefer it go out my home line but want it to roll if needed. So with this little macro it is possible for that to happen.

Samba(4) + AFS
This maybe more appropriate on the developers list but I'll ask here first. Anybody know if any improved support for AFS is being added to either samba 3 or 4? We currently share all user home directories, shared files, web sites, etc. etc. from AFS using Samba. This setup is working great, thank you to everyone involved!! I'm just concerned that AFS support might not make it
