auth issues on centos5 with ldap backend
Hi, We've had some issues with auth. /var/log/secure is full of 1000s of these lines: Jun 4 19:12:08 khan dovecot-auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot ruser= rhost=127.0.0.1 user=user123 Users can usually login OK with their ldap credentials, but occasionally logins slow to a crawl if not outright fail, esp people checking

IMAP-proxy or not with sogo webmail and dovecot backend
We've been collecting some stats to see what kind of benefits UP/SquirrelMail's IMAP Proxy in for our SOGo webmail users. Dovecot is running in High-performance mode http://wiki2.dovecot.org/LoginProcess with authentication caching http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Authentication/Caching During the weekend two servers (webmail3 and webmail4) has been running with local imapproxy and two servers

imap-login processes
First, thanks for this great product. We migrated from Courier last week with only small bumps along the way. We have a few hundred active users with a mix of pop3 and imap clients. The server is running on sparc Solaris 9. We're seeing a problem now with the number of "imap-login" processes rising slowly to it's limit and then (understandably) not letting any more logins

1.0.5: many pop3-login processes?
Hello, We are running dovecot 1.0.5 on a test server, with FreeBSD 6.2 (though I have noticed the same problem since dovecot versions in the 0.99 range). We don't have very many simultaneous pop/imap users, but we have a proliferation of pop3-login processes. Currently we have 128 such processes. We have 11 imap-login processes, but only a few actual imap processes running. Is this normal?

No log for hitting login_max_processes_count?
I think today just due to increased use, my mail servers hit login_max_processes_count. It wasn't obvious what was happening, logins just weren't acting like they should and sometimes would get disconnected before given a prompt from the server. Something made me think to check if I had too many of certain dovecot processes and I found I had 128 imap-login processes on both servers,

Error: Maximum number of mail processes exceeded
Hi, i don't know. Is normal login_max_processes_count > 1024?? Our environment is about 1700 users (imaps + thunderbird or imaps+horde). The server is RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.2 User logins different in a hour: # cat dovecot.info | grep 'Nov 11 10' | grep "login: Login" | cut -d'<' -f2 | cut -d'>' -f1 | sort | uniq | wc -l 685 Logins in a hour:

limits to serve sure a number of users
Hi, lets say dovcot should serve 1000 user (only imaps) without rejecting a users connection because of to short resources. With version 1.x I had to increase login_max_processes_count = ... With 2.x I'm not sure which parameters I have to set. So Thunderbird 3.x has a default value of 5 connections to cache. "dovadm who" shows quite often 5 connections: userx 5 imap (11154

login_* options for 1.0.15
Hello all, Although i'm aware that version 1.0.15 is rather old, that's what is used in Lenny, so... Either way, the setup is rather simple, regular dovecot install, with maildirs residing on a "local" ext3 filesystem accessed through FC to a SAN (2Gbps link). The server has 2 cores (with HT), so "almost" 4 cores and 3GB of ram. A couple weeks ago we had a major

What is normal CPU usage of dovecot imap?
I got Dual Core Intel Xeon CPU 3.00GHz, over 1000 mailbox and almost 1 dovecot login / second (peak time). Server stats says that load is continually over 2 and cpu usage is 60%. top says that imap is making this load. virtual users are in mysql database and mysqld is running on another server (this server is ok). Do I need better CPU or is there something going on that I do not understand? #

hoping someone has a suggestion
Hi using dovecot 1.0.10 with pop/imap, using maildir, with 2000+ users mostly using pop but many using imap. Once in a great while I have problems with dovecot pop timing out. If I telnet to port 110 it just takes forever to come up or it doesn't at all, the samething happens on the imap port although 110 is always worst. At 1st when troubleshooting I was not sure what was causing the

Split number of imap-login and pop3-login processes
Hi All, Is there a way to define the number for imap-login processes and pop3-login processes separately? My mail server is getting more IMAP clients and much less POP3 clients these days and it continues to run out of authentication processes. I have been increasing login_max_processes_count the last couple of days and I noticed that it's split between IMAP and POP3. All 129 imap-login

imaptest10 and stalled messages
Greetings - I've now got as far as playing with the imaptest10 test utility to see if I can stress-test our development server. imaptest10 is built against dovecot-1.0rc28 It may just be that I'm excessively heavy handed, but when I let imaptest10 rip with the command... ./imaptest10 user=test%03d host=testserver.imap.york.ac.uk clients=50 mbox=./dovecot.mbox msgs=1000 secs=30

rc7 crashing under heavy load
Help! Our students are back and they are pounding my dovecot server to death (ie "Login process died too early - shutting down" or "too many open files" type crash). I've had my third crash today. My setup: Solaris 10, imap and imaps, 3K users coming in via horde webmail. My current connection settings are: login_max_processes_count = 2048 login_max_connections = 4096

avoiding DoS
Hi, I was just looking for some advice on avoiding getting DoS'd from brute force log in attempts. We came in this morning to find that one of our Solaris 9 dovecot severs had wedged overnight due to a brute force connection attempt to pop3 from Brasil. In the span of about 15 seconds we received 342 connection auth attempts from the same IP: Sep 3 00:10:51 xxxxx dovecot: [ID 583609

Question on Simultaneous Equations & Forecasting
Hello, I have estimated a simultaneous equation model (similar to Klein's model) in R using the system.fit package. I have an identity equation, along with three other equations. Do you know how to explicitly identify the identity equation in R? I am also trying to forecast the dependent variables in the simultaneous equation model, while incorporating the identity equation in the

Random timeouts on mailboxes
Hello, My dovecot server is currently having random issues when users want to acces their mailbox. When the issue is occuring there's a timeout. It's random because it happens more or less often and is not dependent on a user or the way their check the mailbox. The time during the problem occurs is random, sometimes it's less than a minute, sometimes it's some hours. When a
