Unprivileged user can write to mbr
Hi,
I'm having trouble rationalizing the behaviour described below. Is this
a security-issue (bug) or a feature?
- An unprivileged user 'bztest' with read-only access to /dev/ar0:
%id
uid=1004(bztest) gid=1004(test) groups=1004(test), 5(operator)
%ls -l /dev/ar0
crw-r----- 1 root operator 4, 21 Nov 23 17:34 /dev/ar0
- Now, the device ar0 has the standard mbr installed:

After an update stable doesn't boot
Hi
I just did a system update and after I've rebooted it doesn't boot up any
more.
All I'm getting is a blank screen with a curser blinking at the top left
corner of the screen.
This system was running 7.0-STABLE
Any ideas as to how I can get it back up?
Regards

Urgent FreeBSD Boot question!
Dear friends:
I decided to go out and buy the latest issue of Linux Format with the
FreeBSD 6 CD. I am very glad I did. FreeBSD is tough to install, but
after spending several hours I finally succeeded in doing a perfect
installation. ONE BIG PROBLEM: When I removed the CD and rebooted, I got
into my Windows XP (I have two separate disks, one for Windows, one of
FreeBSD). There was no way to get

bugged sysinstall, bsdlabel, zfs, gmirror - recept for disaster :)
Hello there!
Here's my story, hopefully some of you won't follow my steps and avoid
some troubles :)
Yesterday I've decided that's about time to test zfs functionality on my
home server PC (i386 FreeBSD 7.1-pre) . A couple of weeks ago I bought
new desktop PC (with SATA), so I had a bunch of PATA disks from old one
to use in server. Lucky me - there was 3 HDD at size 40GB -

where I have two 750GB Seagate SATA Disks. They are divided as two slices,
around the first 120GB are gathered in gmirror, and what left is in
gstripe. so that's whats going on. if the machine locks, and fsck comes to

gmirror+gjournal: unable to boot after crash
Hi,
after one month with gmirror and gjournal running on a 7.0-RELEASE #p2 amd64 (built from latest CVS source), the box hung a couple of times when on high disk load. Finally, while building some port it won't boot for no reason obvious to me.
This is what I get with kernel.geom.mirror.debug=2:

gmirror crash writing to disk? Or is it su+j crash?
So I have a system running:

unable to use gmirror on supermicro 5015b-mt
These are new boxes.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015B-MT.cfm
core 2 Q6600 CPU
8Gb 667 RAM
Boxes were memtested from Fri-Mon okay. 6.3-RELEASE (amd64) installs fine.
Build cycle okay. Running (no load) for a week or so.
However, when I try to configure gmirror they hang on boot.
After some fiddling it appears issuing
#kldload geom_mirror
hangs the boxes very hard.

10.0 BETA3 - nanobsd.sh does not use pkg
Hi, all,
I just wanted to report that. I do not yet have a patch to suggest.
nanobsd.sh cust_pkg() still tries to call pkg_add and fails when
adding packages to the NANO_WORLD_DIR. tbz vs. txz ?
Kind regards
Patrick

Restricting users from certain privileges
Hi:
I could not figure out how to restrict users or other users from certain
privileges to execute certain commands in FreeBSD/NanoBSD?
What I meant is I want to create a NanoBSD image in which there will be an
additional user, say 'admin'. I need to give this new user (admin) some
privileges to run some root-can-only-execute commands, but not all (ACL
similar to the firmwares in adsl

[heads up] axing AppleTalk and IPX/SPX
Hello!
[Cc to stable@, for wider audience]
The plan is two axe two old networking protocols from FreeBSD head/,
meaning that FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE, available in couple of years would
be shipped without them.
1) AppleTalk
Last time claimed to be supported by vendor in 2007[1]. In practice
had very little use since 90th.
Discontinued by major routing equipment vendors since 2009[2].
