Use 8GB RAM on Pentium D?
Hello:
I have a Supermicro SuperServer 5015P-TR.
It has a Pentium D and is running CentOS x86_64.
Can this machine use 8GB RAM?
I think it should because it is running a 64 bit
OS, but I am concerned because it is fundamentally
32 bit hardware.
Anyone have any experience in this area?
Thanks,
Neil

XFS for CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 [ was: issue - no keyboard after reboot]
Okay, so far so good - and many thanks to all who jumped in on this one.
Now, we would like to look into making some changes in XFS, but I didn't
see a SRPM for the kernel-module-xfs for 42.0.8 - the most recent one is
for 42.0.3.
Is this usable, or is there somewhere (else?) I can get the SRPM for the
42.0.8 XFS?
Thanks.

Use Microsoft shared fax printer?
Hello:
Is it possible to use Samba to send documents to
a Microsoft Shared Fax Printer?
How would I give it the phone number and other recipient
details that normally comes in the popup window when
I print to a shared fax printer from Windows?
Thanks,
Neil

Getting kernel source for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp
Hello!
I need to get an arcnet device driver up and running. Normally it
appears to be distributed with linux, but not installed. So, I need to
compile and install it, naturally.
So, where is the kernel souce for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp? I can find kernel
source for 2.6.9.
BTW, I obtained 2.6.9 and tried compiling it, but all I got was *.o
files and
insmod: error inserting 'arcnet.o`: -1

CentOS 4.4 blocking outbound connections?
Hello:
When I installed CentOS 4.4 (from the ServerCD) on my server, I told
it not to install a firewall and I disabled SELinux. The server is
a SuperMicro 5015P-TR.
I set up my own /etc/init.d/firewall with these rules:
#!/bin/sh
# Firewall script
#
# Source function library
. /etc/init.d/functions
RETVAL=0
# Some definitions (Will need to change ETH0_IP to match your configuration)

2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp
Hi,
I currently have a few CentOs 4.X servers running the latest stock
2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp kernel.
I notice kernel.org are now up to version 2.6.18 and many people are using
the 2.6.17.11
Does anyone have any opinions with regards to the 17.11 and .18 kernels?
I'm led to believe the latest centos stock kernels are the same anyway as
are the backported Redhat ones.
I'd be interested to

Kernel ELsmp vs EL
Hi all,
I'm not very used to CentOS and Linux generally speaking, though I read
a lot and 'man' quickly became a very good friend of mine, right after
Google, so sorry if that's a ridiculous one! (at least it'll give you a
good laugh!)
I updated the kernel to 2.6.9-42.0.2 recently and that raised a
question... Simple... Yet silly...! What exactly is the difference

Centos 4 and Supermicro ICH7R
Hi:
I've tried to install centos 4.3 in a raid array, setuped on bios as
mode "Adaptec". The chip is ICH7R but centos always sees 2 drives
instead of the array that I create.
I've contacted Supermicro support and they gave me this link
ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ICH7R/Linux/Redhat/ , but
the disk drivers I tried to use with centos 4.3 did not work, saying

From LiveCD, mount hda1 gives resource busy
Hello:
I booted from the CentOS 4.4 CD.
I am trying to mount the partitions on the hard drive of
the physical machine (Fedora Core).
I did:
mkdir /mnt/hda1
chmod 755 /mnt/hda1
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
I get back:
mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /mnt/hda1 busy
I checked with df. I don't see hda1 anywhere.
Any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks,
Neil

How to diagnose "Unable to handle kernel paging request" kernel panic?
Does anyone know how to diagnose the error "Unable to handle kernel
paging request at virtual address xxxxxx"?
I got this error (followed by a panic and a crash) on a server
running CentOS 4.4 with the 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp kernel. The machine
is based on an Intel 975XBX2 motherboard (975X chipset). I have
built several of these and they have been extremely stable. This one

2.6 memory management question
Hello all.
I have a centos 4.4 box (2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp) with 7gig of ram that
doesn't seem to be using swap (also 7gig now). I say "seem" because
I've noticed ram utilization run around 95% (with oracle and friends
running) and then firing up a couple apps to use that last 5% will
stop the machine dead in it's tracks.
I ran across some reading[0] about

Software RAID 10?
Hello...
I have a server with 4 x SCSI drives and I would like to install Centos
4 (or 5) onto a software RAID 10 array. Do you know if this is
possible? I noticed that under the Centos 4.92 beta, RAID 5 is an option
but for some reason RAID 10 is not listed.
There does appear to be a RAID 10 module....

Supermicro & Boot Failures with DVD Centos 6.2
Eve.8ryone,
I have had a SuperMicro machine running Centos 5.8 that had been
progressively updated with yum-cron from a 5.0 CD install.
I upgraded the SuperMicro with more memory, switched out the CD with a
DVD and tried to boot to the Centos x64 6.2 dvd. My plan was to test
the memory before I added the hard drives, but I could not I could not
get the machine to boot from the disc. I also

Centos 7.0 and mismatched swap file
Everyone,
I am putting together a new mail server for our firm using a SuperMicro
with Centos 7.0. When performed the install of the os, I put 16 gigs of
memory in the wrong slots on the mother board which caused the
SuperMicro to recognize 8 gigs instead of 16 gigs. When I installed
Centos 7.0, this error made the swap file 8070 megs instead of what I
would have expected to be a over 16000

CentOS 2.6.9-42.0.8 issue - no keyboard after reboot
I did this twice now, although the first couple of builds seemed to work
ok, they just weren't configured quite right.
On my third and fourth builds of the 42.0.8 kernel rpm, when booting,
kudzu came up and ran, but the keyboard was somehow not recognized and I
had to reboot using the mouse on the login screen (no text appears no
matter what I type).
I'm using the rpm build strategy from

SCSI drives and Centos 7
Everyone,
about 4 years ago, I tried to install CentOS 6 on a Supermicro server
with SCSI drives using a LSI raid system. I could never figure out or
find a way to make the installation disc of Centos 6 identify the SCSI
drives. The installation disc for Centos 5 identified the SCSI drives
without a problem. I finally gave up on Centos 6 and installed Centos 5
and the system has worked very

High load averages with latest kernel and USB drives?
I'm having a server report a high load average when backing up Postgres
database files to an external USB drive. This is driving my loadbalancers all
out of kilter and causing a large volume of network monitor alerts.
I have a 1TB USB drive plugged into a USB2 port that I use to back up the
production drives (which are SCSI). It's working fine, but while doing backups
