premature question on 5.6
What will be the correct way to migrate ext3 to ext4 going from 5.5 to 5.6? Will something after the update ask if you want to migrate the file systems? Looking forward to some file system speed ups with large files. Thanks Jerry

11TB ext4 filesystem - filesystem alternatives?
Hi All. I have a CentOS server: CentOS 5.6 x86_64 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5.centos.plus e4fsprogs-1.41.12-2.el5.x86_64 which has a 11TB ext4 filesystem. I have problems with running fsck on it and would like to change the filesystem because I do not like the possibility of running long fsck on it, it's a production machine. Also I have some problems with running fsck (not enough RAM, problem with

filesystem
I hope this is the right list. I have created an ext2 filesystem and removed the dir_index feature. I don't know if this kind of experimentation is going to help me learn something about filesystems or not. Well what is dir_index? Then I ran e2fsck -f -v -pD and the /dev file. Now what did I remove? Htree. I guess it can always be put back and it's on an experimental filesystem.

location of file-system information on ext4
Hi, I zero-filled first 10MiB of my SSD(dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=10M count=1). As expected, this wiped my primary GPD header and first partition. Before the wipe, GPT was following: Disk /dev/sda: 250069680 sectors, 119.2 GiB Logical sector size: 512 bytes Disk identifier (GUID): 2EFD285D-F8E6-4262-B380-232E866AF15C Partition table holds up to 128 entries First usable sector is 34, last

ext4?
Listee's... I have a 5.5 box and I have formatted a partition as ext4 however I can't mount it, the mount command is telling me its an unknown file system type. fsck tells me the partition is a clean ext4 partition but I can't mount it. Some reasearch has lead me to believe the problem is that ext4 isn't enabled in the kernel by default in 5.5 (this was originally a 5.2 box that

CLI speed tester for CentOS?
I'd like to run a CLI broadband speed tester on my CentOS server. I downloaded "tespeed" from <http://sourceforge.net/projects/tespeed/>. This ran fine under Fedora-19, but failed under CentOS with the message "# reject large message", although from a quick look at the source it did not seem to be using a large test-file. Does anyone know of an alternative CLI

migrating from Centos 5.8 -> 6.3 LDAP Client Config
Hi, I run a Centos 5.8 samba server which uses a separate LDAP centos 6.3 server for user and group authentication. Now we migrate to a new centos 6.3 samba server and I'd like to know how do 'ldapify' that new server the best way. I'm a bit confused if I can use the same nss setup like on the current old server or how and what to configure to go with SSSD? May be someone can

Installing CIFS on CentOS4
Hello, I have a CentOS4 install and I am trying to mount a Windows Server 2008 folder. When I use this command: mount -t cifs //10.1.1.17/Org/MR\ Ops/ test, it only mounts the Org folder. When I try the same thing on a newer computer (Fedora 15), it mounts all the way to MR Ops. So I am pretty sure that my cifs file needs to be updated, but I am having a really hard time doing this. I updated

CUPS not rendering documents via Samba
Hi guys, any CUPS / Samba experts out there? The CUPS printing guide is a horrendous maze of options. I've got nearly there but I've got one thing wrong and I don't know where to look. I set up our two printers (HP K5400s) using the GUI printer tool. Both print the test page just fine. I set up the [printers] and [print$] shares and can browse to the printers from Windows (XP for me)

EXT4 mount issue
Hi All, When a couple of EXT4 filesystems are mounted in a server I get the message Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb): mounted filesystem without journal Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdc): mounted filesystem without journal in the system logs. My confusion is why are they mounted without a journal? They were both created with mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdb mkfs -t ext4

CentOS 5.8 Samba and Windows 7
Hi, any one has successfully joined a Windows 7 workstation to a samba (3.0.33) domain on CentOS 5.8? I am wondering if I need to install a newer version (from sernet by example) or if I can keep the old one and try harder... Thx, JD

Theoretical Firewall Specs?
So, the more I look at various ways to lay out my infrastructure, the more I am thinking about specs for hardware. Starting with firewalling. How does one determine the specs for a firewall? What I mean is: 1. motherboard/CPU - p4? Dual-Core? Intel i3, i5, i7? 2. RAM? 4gb? 8gb? More? 32gb? 3. Obviously GB Nics! I am bring about 300gb of traffic a month right now and I expect that to

Backup live system
Though I've worked with enterprise systems, I'm not familiar with FOOS backup software. Which of those recommended would allow me to backup a system while users are active on it? If it matters the system uses LVM. I'd also like to be able to avoid needing the network if possible. That is, I'd plug in a disk into a USB port and backup the system onto that... again, while

Difference between real and reported disk usage
(I'm not subscribed to the list: please keep me in CC) I'm copying files between two samba server using robocopy from a third Windows PC and i'm experiencing disk usage that is much higher on the destination PC. The origin samba server is Debian Lenny with samba 3.2.5. The destination samba server is Debian Wheezy with samba 3.6.9 The PC running robocopy is Windows Server 2003 with
