Centos 6.4 and Virtualbox
I'm trying to install Centos 6.4 under Virtualbox on a Mac running Lion. I downloaded the 2 iso DVD files and set Virtualbox to boot from DVD 1 When I start the vm it puts out a lot of messages then asks me what kind of install I want to do. I select the basic install and it tells me it found the media ( the iso DVD file I downloaded) puts out a message about the anaconda ( I think) install

Adding browsers
Recently, I put CentOS 6.4 on one of the four PCs I keep behind a KVM switch. I like it a whole lot in most ways, but Fedora has spoiled me : I install almost every browser I can, and generally keep half a dozen or more open, mostly with several tens of tabs open. Iow, I use browsers as I used to use books, back in the Carboniferous when I had a desk in the stacks. Are there ways a

Trying to justify CentOS vs. RHEL
Hi all, I'm in the process of moving all of my RHEL systems over to CentOS but the argument that fires back at me is for critical vulnerabilities for items such as zero-day exploits and such. >From what I've been reading, RHEL releases critical patches much quicker than CentOS which makes sense since CentOS is simply a copy and when changes occur they propagate down to the RHEL clones.

Can't get Grub work on clone of machine
Hi. I have cloned a RHEL 5.6 physical server over to a ESXi 5.0 Virtual Machine. Using a live CD on the new Virtual Machine I created 3 partition /boot (/dev/sda1), / (/dev/sda2) and swap (/dev/sda3), I then mounted the / (sda2) partition and created the /boot directory and mount the boot partition partition /dev/sda1 into /boot. I then used rsync to copy the source machine over to the Virtual

Microsoft likes CentOS's wiki
Hi, Microsoft liked my How-To for Skype so much it copied part of it on its own page (https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12120/getting-started-with-skype- for-linux?intcmp=blogs-_-generic-click-_-skype-for-linux-4-2#2.5) Microsot is entitled to copy the How-To both legally and ethically, but it also claims copyright, which it can't do. On the other hand, it only copied a small part,

Fixing grub/shim issue Centos 7

The shim-x64 package installs its files directly to the EFI partition

My server won't boot (grub looping - stage2)
Hi, This morning one of my servers (centos 4.5) refused to boot. The console shows a lopp message grub loading stage2... I've been able to boot from the install CD choosing the rescue option. I can chroot /mnt/sysimage with no problems and even started the services (network, mysql , httpd etc). How can I solve this? I've followed the manual (

Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode
I boot from the installation DVD, with an already existing CentOS 5.5 system on my hard disks. I have separate boot, root, and home partitions. I have moved the boot partition and now I need to re-initialize grub from rescue mode. Attempting to use 'rescue mode" to automatically mount my system under /mnt/sysimage eventally fails with an error message, which essentially says

obscure out of space, df and fi df are way off
Very low priority. No user data at risk. 8GB virtual disk being installed to, and the installer is puking. I''m trying to figure out why. I first get an rsync error 12, followed by the installer crashing. What''s interesting is this, deleting irrelevant source file systems, just showing the mounts for the installed system: [root@localhost tmp]# df Filesystem

Centos 5.5 KVM GRUB / Virtio issue
I have a virtual machine that had been running fine using a RAW disk image (IDE). I am in the process of converting this virtual machine to use a single LVM and virtio. (For LVM backup snapshots and easy resizing purposes (no LVM within the guest)) I create the LVM and copied all the files from the existing RAW image to an ext3 under the LVM. However, I cannot get it to boot. It has to do

When I boot from the install DVD and type "linux rescue" I eventually get the message, after attempting to have one of the screens mount my partitions in read/write mode: "An error occurred trying to mount some or all of your system. Some of it may be mounted under /mnt/sysimage." But nothing

Making a clone of an LVM-based EL5 install
Does anybody here have any idea how to make an exact copy of a drive that has LVM partitions? I'm having trouble using dd to do this for an EL5 server. We're trying to diagnose a software problem of some kind and would like an exact, perfect copy of the software running so that we can see exactly what the problem is without disturbing our production copy. It's been admin practice
