Rails 2.3.9 breaks sessions with Active Record or Memcache store
A Rails 2.3.9 app with Active Record or Memcache session store will never send the session ID cookie to a client if the client doesn''t send any HTTP cookies in its requests. Rails integration tests didn''t catch this because they always send the HTTP_COOKIE header, even if it''s empty. This is a huge bug, as it can break keeping sessions on sites which don''t set

setting session id for first visit
I am logging web visits with a before_filter on the application controller. The issue I''m having is that the initial visit does not return a session id. I''m using the SqlSessionStore and the function MysqlSession.find_session(session.session_id) to retrieve the session id. If it doesn''t exist I use a -1. So looking in my visits table the initial visit always has -1 for

Best way to run hundreds of concurrent tasks?
Hi all, I''m trying to figure out to run some asynchronous tasks in a Facebook app. I''ve got things working, but BRB crashes after a little while, and I''m not sure if my setup is ideal. Here''s the scenario: - whenever a user visits my app, I need to fire off a bunch of API calls. - these calls need to start right away, because the user sees a

Cookies & gsub ?
I''m looking to store the current params into a/some cookie(s). This works: @params.each_pair do |this_index, this_param| cookies[this_index] = this_param end Except, I get session-only cookies. This doesn''t work: @params.each_pair do |this_index, this_param| cookies[this_index] = { :value => this_param, :expires => 30.days.from_now } end

Ajax, the Back button, and Sweepers
I''m working on an app that''s basically forms and that makes fairly heavy use of Ajax. As a result of the Ajax usage, if the visitor uses the back button they get the page as it was originally loaded, not as they left it. I''ve looked at the Sweeper documentation and can not tell for sure that it''ll do what I want, which is to force an unconditional reload from

stupid user tricks with ices2: "No such file or directory" :P
Michael and Karl, Thanks for your replies. Sorry for confusing you with bad test info. The contents of playlist.txtthat I referred to in my earlier email did not match the log result I specified. However, I had ran the test with both a full and relative path in playlist.txt; "/home/john/Visitors.ogg" and "Visitors.ogg". Got it working, however. Tried playing a different ogg

question about how to set up an active record adapter to prefer use of prepared statements...
Hi, I am writing an active record adapter for our new database and when I run the tests I see lots of statements that could be run as prepared statements, but instead of passing me bindings AR passes me a fully specialized SQL string, not in all cases, but in many. Here is an example: SELECT addrs.* FROM addrs WHERE addrs.user_id = 153 FETCH FIRST 1 ROWS ONLY I do have this hook set up:

Reusing story snippets
I find myself doing this: Scenario "logged in user visiting the home page" do Given "A logged in user" do a_logged_in_user end When "..." Then "..." end The a_logged_in_user method is a helper method in helper.rb which sets up the state so that the user can browse the website. Later in the story of course, I can just do ''Given

Finding an average time spent
Hello R help! I am extremely new to R (as in 3 just days) and I've been using it to do some pretty basic things. I am frustratingly stuck on one point, and am so so so close to figuring it out, but just far enough away to ask for some (perhaps embarrassingly easy) help. I have a dataset, visitors, that has a variable called Time.Spent. Time.Spent consists of times in the format hh:mm:ss ,

The Next Guide Will Be...
The Next Guide Will Be... August 3rd, 2005 The next guide on Sambadmin will about creating a great LDAP infrastructure. I have been disappointed that I have only received two comments about what the next guide should be, especially since the site has had over 500 visitors in the past two days. I came to this decision after reading my posts. I stated that the core motivation behind all of this is

Q: Share Definitions, how to make a 'truely public' area
Greetings, I am trying to set up a "Public" share that visitors who do not have accounts in our system have ro access to, while staff members (who do have accounts) have rw access. Our department has visitors who plug laptops into our network who will only be there once, and want to copy some of our software. However, with the following share definition, staff have rw access, but

stupid user tricks with ices2: "No such file or directory" :P
I must be doing something really stupid. I've read the docs for icecast2 and ices2. Icecast2 is running fine; I can get stats.xml and see that it is running. When I run ices2, I get the following error in ices.log: ... [2005-12-07 05:37:51] INFO playlist-basic/playlist_basic_get_next_filename Loading playlist from file "/home/john/playlist.txt" [2005-12-07 05:37:51] WARN

CSRF protection in rails 2.3.11
Hi all, I think CSFR protection broke in rails 2.3.11. As in: it''s turned off now. I tried this in rails 2.3.10 and in 2.3.11 and 2.3.11 seems broken. >rails csrftest >cd csrftest >script/generate scaffold post title:string >rake db:migrate now I visit /posts/new in my browser, use firebug to delete or change the authenticity token, and submit the form. rails 2.3.11: all

variance component analysis for nested model
Given a set of data: > names(data) [1] "city" "house" "visit" "value" I am looking for a way to compute the variance components of the nested model (ie, visit 1 at house 2 at city 3 isn't related to visit 1 and house 2 at city 4), but different houses in the same city may be related, and different visits to the same house are probably

2 Rails Applications sharing same login system
Hi i have 2 seperate rails applications. They both share the same login system. If someone is logged into application 1 then they should be able to start using application 2 without logging in again. I am unsure how to achieve this. I''ve a feeling i can somehow do it by telling both the apps to share a cookie, but i''m not sure. Does anyone know how to do this or has anyone

Lumping vs. Splitting (REST)
Hi Everyone, Working on a REST-based web application, and I need some ammo in dealing with my supervisors and contractors. Is it better to: Method 1: Take in one large XML-based POST request, which contains 1st, 2nd and 3rd level elements, and build the associated child and grandchild objects in the parent controller, Method 2: Instead use a number of smaller XML-based POST requests

how long before deleting sessions ?
What is the recommended amount of time to keep sessions around in the database (i store them in a sessions table). IF you get 1 million requests per day you are going to get 1 million new session entries in the DB. This would need some serious cleaning so just wondering what a safe cleanup time would be. Also does anyone know how to prevent new sessions records from being created if session
