(D)DNS Updates with GNU/Linux clients in a samba 4 AD environment (BIND_DLZ)
Hi !
I bounce on the Mr Sloop's post ([Samba] DDNS / DHCPd && Internal DNS or
BIND_DLZ) to ask what's the easiest way to allow Linux clients to update
themself their DNS record in the Samba4 AD server (with BIND_DLZ Dns
server).
It works well with windows clients, but with Linux clients joined to the
domain, with a valid Kerberos ticket, the client receive a error

how to allow ISC dhcpd to add/update entries to bind9 with bind_dlz (samba4)
Hello all,
I have set up a samba4 server with bind9 and the bind_dlz module.
Everything is working as it should but now I need to allow the dhcp
server to add entries to the forwarding zone. Has anybody implemented
such a configuration ? Can this be done with the kerberos DNS dynamic
update configuration.
I want to achieve the following:
1) allow non-Windows machines (printers, ILO ...) to be

smb.conf for Windows clients
So, I'm trying to paw through the long set of smb.conf options - and
it's rather daunting.
I'm wondering what smb.conf options are most
important/appropriate/common for mostly Windows XP/7/(possibly v8) clients.
TIA

Dovecot vs MBox
I'm still in the "what's wrong" stage of figuring out what's going on.
But I've got a mail user who isn't getting new messages.
Postfix accepts it and drops it in the users mbox. [This is verified.
If I tail the Mbox, I can see the new messages.]
"Mail" will see the messages too.
But dovecot doesn't seem to know they exist. I don't think the MBox

pfSense DHCP integration with Samba AD DDNS
Hi Rowland,
I don't want to to run an AD DC on firewall device, barely DHCP and
maybe DNS.
What you have pointed me to is similar to what I have in place:
https://blog.michael.kuron-germany.de/2011/02/isc-dhcpd-dynamic-dns-updates-against-secure-microsoft-dns/
and which is working fine.
NOW I want to switch DHCP from isc-dhcp-server 4.2.2 on Debian to DHCP
on pfSense firewall (based on

DDNS, DHCP and AD
Looking for general theory here - perhaps this will devolve into more "how
to" later, but right now I need overall understanding.
We handle DHCP outside AD. We also do DDNS there, and handle DNS lookups.
Here's what the current setup looks like
We have a pair of DHCP servers (ISC DHCPD) and those same boxes handle DNS
for the network. They're in the DNS domain of, lets say;

Namespace problem? duplicated folders...
Anyone?
A tip on where/what to look at, even?
I've read the docs on namespaces and I'm not sure how I could do this [or not do it, in this case] from the docs.
I realize I didn't include the version I'm running in the prior post too.
It is; 2.2.22
I'm sure this is related to name-spaces, but for some reason [brain damage perhaps? :) ] I can't seem to figure out how to

Samba AD-DC in the cloud
This turns into a non-samba discussion pretty quickly - but I'll chime in.
I agree with Sven - that's true. The real problem, as I see it is that the interests of the client and the vendor often don't really align - at least not in the short term.
The vendor wants to do things as cheaply as possible so they make money now.
You [the client] want them to provide reliable service.

doveadm sync backup from old to new server
Yeah, I tried that already - and it seems to crash more badly...

Namespace problem? duplicated folders...
Interesting.
While I don't use mbox (dbox or maildir) I wouldn't think that would
matter. Your namespace layout looks nearly the same as my own. But to
verify what's going on - post the output of "doveconf namespace".
Possibly just reviewing that output may tell you enough - otherwise
share it (fully) here.

doveadm sync backup from old to new server
I'm not clear myself on the difference myself between
dsync
doveadm sync
doveadm dsync-server
... perhaps someone here can explain? However what worked for me was using doveadm dsync-server on the 'receive' end. Maybe that puts it in 'listen' mode? So maybe try
doveadm backup -u user at abc.net \
ssh root at po.abc.net \
docker exec b3093cxxxxxx doveadm dsync-server -u

Securring DHCP, with DDNS
Hi,
Ok it's better like this!:-) The dhcp failover mode works well and 2
windows 7 client PC are well handled.
They can have an IP and addresses are created/deleted in the DNS
successfully.
but...
I try to remove my 2 old windows 2000 AD server from the production's
LAN and put my 2 new Samba4 instead.
The dhcp servers works fine but not really the DDNS.
We have this kind of error

DC disaster recovery
Yeah, I could setup an extra XCP box - but at smaller setups, it really seems like overkill.
So, it sounds like restores of the VM work "fine."
How often do machine accounts reset their passwords?
[This is the one that is most likely to be problematic. Rejoining the domain means a new profile. And that's a big PITA on the client side.]
User password changes can simply be handled by

DNS service for my clients is provided by my gateway server, the same
machine as the DHCPD server. I think that's what the "option
domain-name-servers" line does. This allows me to provide 192.168
addresses to them when they try to access anything inside the house
with a name. If it's not a locally defined name, BIND forwards the
request to the internet.

While I've seen a lot of solution use that script, I'm wondering to myself is there any other solution? I'm also curious still does anyone know what these messages mean:

@Christian I know but at some point you try everything ;-)
We fixed it the Microsoft-way by rebooting both DCs after the reboot
