Release notes appendix for libguestfs 1.20 on Fedora 18
I'm just about to release libguestfs 1.20. This appendix covers
issues specific to Fedora 18.
Fedora 18 defaults to using the libvirt attach-method, meaning that
libvirt is used to create and manage the libguestfs appliance. There
are several benefits to this (see the full release notes). You can
switch back to the ordinary method (directly running qemu) at any time
by doing:

Notes on compiling libguestfs 1.19.59 on Debian 7 (Wheezy) beta
In no particular order. Some of these need further investigation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I had to patch libguestfs not to use febootstrap-supermin-helper
--copy-kernel option. See attachment #1. This could be avoided by
providing a newer febootstrap in Wheezy.
I had to patch libguestfs to make it not use the (not working)

Notes on libguestfs with Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)
Ubuntu are now supplying a libguestfs package (or to be more accurate,
they are just copying the Debian package) but it doesn't work out of the box.
There is a bug in apt which we worked around in febootstrap 3.14, but
the supplied version of febootstap is only 3.12. Hence you will get
errors like this during installation:
febootstrap: aptitude: error: no file was downloaded corresponding

NOTE: In libguestfs 1.19.41, the libvirt backend will have sVirt enabled by default
[If you're using the upstream libguestfs with default settings, then
this does NOT affect you. libvirt isn't required by libguestfs.]
>From libguestfs 1.19.41, if you have selected the alternate libvirt
method to launch the appliance, ie, if you have done:
./configure --with-default-attach-method=libvirt
then sVirt is enabled by default.

NOTE: New location for libguestfs, hivex and febootstrap git repositories
I have moved all three repositories to new locations on github:
https://github.com/libguestfs/libguestfs
https://github.com/libguestfs/hivex
https://github.com/libguestfs/febootstrap
You don't need to reclone them (unless you want to). You can simply
edit .git/config and adjust the URL to:

[PATCH febootstrap] Pull in febootstrap-supermin-helper (C version) from libguestfs.
This patch is FYI as it needs more testing, although feel free to take
a look at it if you want.
Background: We'd like to change libguestfs so that the appliance can
support optional features. This would mean you could have (for
example) a 'libguestfs' base package and a 'libguestfs-xfs' package
providing optional support for XFS filesystem tools. This would only
apply to

febootstrap is nowadays a cross-platform appliance builder which
supports currently yum+rpm (Fedora and RHEL), apt+dpkg (ie. Debian and
Ubuntu), and pacman (ArchLinux).

libguestfs on debian squeeze
Hello all,
I tried unsuccessfully to run libguestfs on debian squeeze (with kernel
from testing) using the packages you provide here:
http://libguestfs.org/download/binaries/debian-packages/.
The output I get from libguestfs-test tool is this:

TMPDIR=(not set)

question from 'edwin' on #libguestfs
This was a question asked last week on the IRC channel. I was on
holiday and no one else was around at that time of the day to answer
it ...
< edwin> [Wed 19:27] hi
< edwin> [Wed 19:28] libguestfs-test-tool says "sh: mkisofs: not found" on Debian, it is supposedly replaced by
genisoimage. How do I proceed about gathering debug info on why guestfs

libguestfs-test-tool on ubuntu: kernel panic
Hi,
I am trying to get libguestfs-test-tool working on ubuntu. The first
problem I had was that HiveX won't compile on ubuntu to due to some missing
symbols (rpl-getopt, I see this has already been reported). Second problem
is that if HiveX is not available, guestfish doesn't link because code
refers to symbols which aren't compiled into libguestfs (I was able to work
around this by

IMPORTANT: New git repositories for febootstrap & libguestfs
The machine at et.redhat.com is going to be decommissioned soon, and
so I have arranged alternate hosting for these two git repositories.
As of now you should use:

git clone git://git.annexia.org/git/febootstrap.git

Why libguestfs guest exist exceptionally?
HI,
On a RHEL5 box, i tried to directly run guest which was issued by
libguestfs virt-xxx commands as below. But after some minutes, it
exited exceptionally.
Does anyone also hit the issue or know the reason?
#/usr/bin/qemu-kvm -global virtio-blk-pci.scsi=off
-nodefconfig -nodefaults -nographic -drive
file=ubuntu1204_64_20G_aliaegis_20140811.vhd,snapshot=on,if=virtio

libguestfs binary "fixed appliance"
http://libguestfs.org/download/binaries/appliance/
This could be interesting for people trying to compile libguestfs on
platforms which don't yet support febootstrap.
I suspect it may also be useful for Debian. I'm not suggesting that
Debian uses a binary appliance, but instead of having
update-guestfs-appliance build a supermin appliance, it could build a
fixed appliance (in two steps,

[PATCH] Fix error launching libguestfs when euid != uid
When writing to a RHEV target, virt-v2v launches the libguestfs appliance with
euid:egid = 36:36, which is required to write to an NFS target using
root_squash. Since the update to use an febootstrap cached appliance, this
causes an error on startup as the cached files are owned by root, but the cache
directory is owned by 36:36. The reason for this is that execve() resets euid
and egid to uid and

Re: HA: Accessing iSCSI disc images from the RHEV Manager using libguestfs
Rich, this wasn't operational.
First of all, the image on my version of RHEV-H is kept in other directory. So I did that:
1. $ export FEBOOTSTRAP_KERNEL=/dev/.initramfs/live/vmlinuz0
2. $ echo $FEBOOTSTRAP_KERNEL
/dev/.initramfs/live/vmlinuz0
3. $ libguestfs-test-tool
