4.4 yum update problem
On one of my machines yum hung up while installing the updates and could not be interrupted or killed. I rebooted the machine the next day, but now a 'yum update' reports: Error: Missing Dependency: openssh = 3.9p1-8.RHEL4.12 is needed by package openssh-askpass-gnome and Error: Missing Dependency: rpm = 4.3.3-13_nonptl is needed by package rpm-build even though rpm -q says those

keep /boot, copy / from elsewhere?
How much is likely to break if you keep a locally installed /boot partition with it's anaconda-crafted module set in the initrd, but wipe and completely replace / and any other partitions with a copy from a machine that has somewhat different hardware? Assume both machines are running the same kernel versions and the change is done while running from the rescue CD or other livecd boot.

Vmware server on centos x86_64server
I had this working once but had to re-use the machine and didn't keep track of what it took. Does anyone have a list of the extra packages needed to run vmware server on a machine with the single-disk x86_64 server install + updates. glibc.i686 installed ok, but xorg-x11-libs.i386 has a conflict with fontconfig that I don't recall from the previous time. Could that have changed with the

variable raid1 rebuild speed?
I have a 750Gb 3-member software raid1 where 2 partitions are always present and the third is regularly rotated and re-synced (SATA disks in hot-swap bays). The timing of the resync seems to be extremely variable recently, taking anywhere from 3 to 10 hours even if the partition is unmounted and the drives aren't doing anything else and regardless of what I echo into

stock openjdk vs. epel
If you have the epel repo installed and enabled during a yum update, you get java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.0.b12.el5.2 instead of the stock .b09 version. Is this intentional and desirable? I thought epel generally did not replace stock components with newer versions. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

Centos 4 software raid issue
i need to remove a software raid 1 form my system. I have yet to find a way that applies to 2.6x kernels. I know the information is out there. Would anyone care to give me a pointer? raid1 disk format?
If you have a disk with several partitions set up as members of a raid1 md devices, can you make a dd image of that disk to replace its matching drive with identical partitions or are there differences between the mirrored partitions? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

raid1 custom initrd and yum
OK sorry to hammer the list but one more question - having almost got the drives mirrored and happy - since I have created a custom initrd that has the raid1 drivers in it, do I now have to tell yum to ignore kernel updates? Will the stock kernel render me unbootable? Actually I am not 100% sure the initrd I created # mkinitrd -f --preload=raid1 /mnt/tmp/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r` is

Read performance on software RAID1?
Hi, Since the data is available in two places on a RAID1 array does the code in any way make use of that for improved performance by reading (different) data form both disks at the same time? Or is the one disk simply a slave that just receives copies of the data and is never really read from at all? Thanks

ext3 errors
I recently set up a new system to run backuppc on centOS 5 with the archive stored on a raid1 of 750 gig SATA drives created with 3 members with one specified as "missing". Once a week I add the 3rd partition, let it sync, then remove it. I've had a similar system working for a long time using a firewire drive as the 3rd member, so I don't think the raid setup is the cause

Connecting to dovecot
Hi All, I've got a brand new dovecot installation. I'm new to dovecot, so please be gentle :-) Anyway, I'm getting some errors when I try to connect to dovecot. I've tried searching the web and haven't been able to find a lot of information. Here's the config info: # dovecot --version 1.1.2 # dovecot -n sudo dovecot -n # 1.1.2: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf base_dir:

raid resync speed?
Has anything changed in updates that would affect md raid1 resync speed? I regularly swap a 750G drive and resync to keep an offsite copy and haven't paid enough attention to known when things changed but it seems to take much longer to sync than it did months ago, even if I unmount the partition and stop most other processes that might compete with it. -- Les Mikesell

RAID1 building via hardware
Hi all, I?m trying to create a RAID1 on a machine. I?ve already configurated BIOS (mother board, Intel, S500VSA SATA) so as to build RAID1 via hardware. However on CentOS Installer, when I reach "disk setup" screen, it shows up 2 devices (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). Is this right (both devices being showed)? How should I proceed on this moment? Make Raid1 2nd disk bootable?
On earlier versions of Centos, I could boot the install CD in rescue mode, let it find and mount the installed system on the HD even when it was just one disk of RAID1 partitions (type=FD). When booting from the centos5 disk the attempt find the system gives a box that says 'You don't have any Linux partitions'. At the bottom of the screen there is something that says:
