Dedicated server running ESXi with no RAID card, ZFS for storage?
Morning all... I have a Dedicated server in a data center in Germany, and it has 2 3TB drives, but only software RAID. I have got them to install VMWare ESXi and so far everything is going ok... I have the 2 drives as standard data stores... But i am paranoid... So, i installed Nexenta as a VM, gave it a small disk to boot off and 2 1Tb disks on separate physical drives... I have created a

(Apologies for the potential duplicate post. My initial post had a smashed subject line. This post only adds the subject and this note.) I would like permission to edit this page. The changes I have in mind are: 1) It is not necessary to burn a CD/DVD to do a "headless" install in cases where the installed system has a monitor, but for some reason cannot support a graphical

mixing WD20EFRX and WD2002FYPS in one pool
Hi, after a flaky 8-drive Linux RAID10 just shredded about 2 TByte worth of my data at home (conveniently just before I could make a backup) I''ve decided to both go full redundancy as well as all zfs at home. A couple questions: is there a way to make WD20EFRX (2 TByte, 4k sectors) and WD200FYPS (4k internally, reported as 512 Bytes?) work well together on a current OpenIndiana? Which

iSCSI ini and ESX Server
I always used IET on CentOS but I have a quick server to setup to backup some VM's, then migrate to DAS on another server and the easiest way for me will be to accomplish this via iSCSI vmfs stores. I figured I would just use the ini that ships with CentOS but have never used it against ESX, anyone do this and have experiences they care to share? Should it be trivial or are there any non

Power Down ESXi before SAN
I have 2 APC UPS systems, one is connected to my ESXi host and the other to my FreeNAS. The battery for the FreeNAS will run out before the battery for the ESXi, so I need ESXi to shutdown first. If I wait until BatteryLow on ESXI, it will be too late as FreeNAS will have already shutdown. How can I change the configuration on ESXI to shutdown after a small delay so that it is done before

Virtualization env to test/demo UEFI PXE boot....
All, (This may be a Gene question, see http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Development/Testing). I'd like to find a virtualization env to test and demo the new UEFI-based PXE boot in pxelinux. I've tried Virtualbox (BIOS-based PXE boot only). And I've tried VMWare workstation 20 (ditto). I know VMWare ESXi will now do UEFI PXE boot, I've seen it as work. But for home or

Virtualization platform choice
Some may be bored with the subject - sorry... Still not decided about virtualization platform for my "webhotel v2" (ns, mail, web servers, etc.). KVM would be a natural way to go, I suppose, only it is too bad CentOS 6 will not be out in time for me - I guess KVM would be more mature in CentOS 6. Any experience with the free "VMware vSphere Hypervisor"?. (It was formerly

virtualization!?!?!
I am virtualizating Samba 4.1.14 with vmware free. Any of you already virtualized and had used vmconverter server to copy a PDC already working with a domain ? Can I copy the hole machine with VMCONVERTER without any problem. I had done already this procedure with a laptop to another place and worked very well. This is pratical and easy, but is this procedure recommended? I would like any advise

VM Performance using KVM Vs. VMware ESXi
Hi All We are currently testing our product using KVM as the hypervisor. We are not using KVM as a bare-metal hypervisor. We use it on top of a RHEL installation. So basically RHEL acts as our host and using KVM we deploy guests on this system. We have all along tested and shipped our application image for VMware ESXi installations , So this it the first time we are trying our application

NUT configuration with APC CS650 and ESXi host
Hello, I have decided to upgrade my home server by turning it into an ESXi host and have also added an APC CS650 UPS. My plan was to have NUT version 2.6.4 running in a Debian 7.7.0 virtual machine, NUT installed using apt. I configured NUT to run as a netserver, installed the ESXi nut .vib, configured the shutdowncmd in the VM to do nothing, so that the ESXi host would close that virtual machine

How to connect to a remote VM ESXi server with Python language?
Hi, Dear Mr/Mrs. I have trouble in connecting to a VM ESXi server with python. I am a developer using libvirt to control remote VM ESXi with python language. But I am not able to connect to a remote VM ESXi server. I make my try to solve this issue: 1: I use the function libvirt.Open() to open the remote VM ESXi Server, but I don't know how to input the password. It seems that there is no

Virt-v2v
Usual prologue: we're testing on CentOS 5.5, RHEL subscriptions purchased. Now trying to use virt-v2v to transfer Win2008 Server guest from ESXi host to KVM host. Have enabled SSH on ESXi host, and can connect using esx+ssh://esxhost, but procedure fails because nc isn't found on ESXi. Fair enough. BTW, ESXi looks like a radically cut down RH system (/etc/sysconfig being the give-away)?

Creating Syslinux UEFI usb boot
I recognize hardware with Lua and execute the ESXi installer with configuration files for that hardware. This works fine with normal Syslinux boot, but I want to get it working for UEFI boot as well. I found?efi64/efi/syslinux.efi and efi32/efi/syslinux.efi in the installer source, copied them and named them respectively?BOOTX64.EFI and?BOOTIA32.EFI in USBDISK:\EFI\BOOT. These were also the

FreeBSD Performance Tip
A small note to all the FreeBSD folks about Ruby performance. While trying to tune Mongrel to run faster on FreeBSD I was stumped as to why it was so horribly slow compared to Linux. Linux on the same machine was getting about 800 req/sec, and FreeBSD was maybe pushing 23 req/sec. Pathetic. I managed to tweak the thread model in Mongrel and get FreeBSD up to about 210 req/sec but still that

mboot.c32, NUMA and tgz
Hi all, I'm attempting to PXE boot ESXi, which uses the syslinux mboot.c32 module. The mboot.c32 included with ESXi seems to be an older version that runs into an "out of memory loading.." problem halfway through, even though the box has 8GB memory. This may be related to NUMA, since it works fine on an older box but not the newer blade. I saw that some non-contiguous memory issues

More WineX Build Problems
I downloaded a newer copy of WineX from the CVS, using WinCVS (Pesky winmodem doesn't work with Linux). I copied it to my linux partition & did a ./configure . To my surprise, an error was returned! bash: ./configure: No such file or directory I'm confused. What am I doing wrong (Yes, I'm a pathetic newbie)? Anybody have any ideas?
