I/) Settings for Skype
I've managed to get Skype set up and working. I can hear the other
person talking, but she can't hear me. During a conversation, I tried
what I thought to be all possible settings in both the "Volume Control"
application and in Skype itself. But no joy.
To make matters more puzzling, I had skype working on this same machine
last year using CentOS 5.6... or maybe it was

QEMU configuration not persistent
Since switching from CentOS 5.7 to CentOS 6.x I find that one of the VMs will not restart upon system reboot. I finally figured out that the video is always set to vmvga after rebooting. In addition the VM's storage always reverts back to IDE from virtio and is set to use the wrong image.
It may be related to the fact that I moved the XML files that defined the VMs from the

checking package versions in various releases
Hey folks,
I am sure there must be an easy way to do this.
I am currently running 5.3 and "yum info db4" tells me that they have
version 4.3.29.
Is that telling me that this is the version in 5.3? Or that this is
the latest version in the 5.x stream?
If the former, then how do I find out what release of the db4 software
(sleepcat berkeley db) is in 5.7?
I don't want to

Centos 5.7--desktop icons are now a blank sheet of paper with the .desktop filename and they don't work
Just rebooted my box (switched keyboards, and since it's a PS/2 keyboard,
it needs to be done at poweroff) and when it came back up, (almost) all
the desktop icons I've created (as distinct from the ones that came with
the system) now don't display correctly.
Instead of the graphic assigned to each, it's just a picture of a blank
sheet of paper with the corner folded over, and the

Misterious hang
Hi all,
Recently one my Centos 5.7 VM just crashes at least once a day randomly (hang).
In /var/log/messages there is nothing at all that there is problem (no
error, no failure). The log just stops.
The only change I did before this crashes is I activated LDAP
authentication, and also auditd. But I don't see any evidence relating
to it.
Any clue where to look for the cause?
Thank you.

AMD Liano A8 Processors supported on CentOS 6.x?
Hi.
Red Hat is saying that AMD Liano A8 CPU's are not supported by
RHEL/CentOS 6: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/articles/65431
Is that true? What can I expect if I try to install CentOS 6.3 on PC
with that CPU?

Booting problem after update, how to track order of starting services
Hi.
I have updated system/server that worked for a long time. It was upgrade
from 6.4 to latest.
After restart, system freezes after most/all of the daemons are booted.
From interactive mode I found out that services starting are:
...
...
atd
jexec
atieventsd
libvirtd
certmonger
libvirt-guests
local
nxsensor
nxserver
webmin
As soon as I allow webmin to pass, system freezes. BUT, if I stop

remote syslog question
Hi all!
I'm still googling for this, but after quite a while I'm no closer, so
I figured I'd ask you guys:
I've got my router using syslog on my centos box to log the router's
system events. Works fine.
however, it mixes 'em into /var/log/messages along with the messages
from the Centos box itself.
is there a way to separate them into itsown (set of??) files? So far

odd mdadm behavior
Allo esteemed Centos-ers,
Noticed something funny with an mdadm mirror based raid the other day.
So I had a system disk set to mirror via mdadm.
One of the disks went south at a remote office and since there was no
one available to swap out the disk, I thought to leave it for later.
Well, due to work being what is it, this later became a year.
During one of the servers many reboots, much of

skype on 5.7
Earlier last year I had a 5.7 system running with skype. It worked
fine. Later last year I had to reinstall my entire system. I didn't
install skype then. Yesterday I tried to find a version of skype to use
on 5.7, but couldn't find one on skype.com; there's no version for
RH/CentOS 5.7. Does anyone know where a working skype can be found?
Thanks.

doing a new install on top of existing software raid-1
Hi all!
One of these days I'm going to upgrade my centos 5.7 box (which is
currently configured with raid-1 on two drives) to 6.x.
i've been given to believe that I should be able to do a fresh install
on top of the existing raid setup, i.e., without having to re-create
the raid array, but just use the existing setup.
and somewhere in the last few days (in this list I think) someone

Help with VMware ESXi manager for CentOS - newbie level
Hi.
On my new job we use VMware ESXi (Free version), but my colleagues use
Windows on their PC's. I am allowed to use CentOS Linux, but I have no
prior experience with WMVare.
I now (today) have to install CentOS 6.x minimal on that ESXi server, so
I am trying to wrap my head around whole ecosystem.
What should I install on my CentOS 6.x so I can access/manage ESXi
server and manage

Slow login to system without internet connection
Hi.
For a long time I am puzzled why, when internet connection is gone
(beyond first router, outside of subnet) SSH (and telnet?) connection is
drastically slowed.
Same behavior, but less impacted is observed when system boots without
working internet connection, and I am not sure, but I think even access
to SAMBA fileshares can be/is affected. Affected systems are mostly
production

Migrate to Linux Server
Hi,
In our company we have a DL380 ( 16gb ram) server with Windows server 2003

We have 2 options: a) upgrade to windows 2008 x64 and b) migrate to Linux (
I mean centos 6 x64).
I want to make some benchmarks.
Please help me to compare a and b.
How I can make this benchmark?

SSHMenu (Gnome Applet) for CentOS 6
Hello,
I know that there exists a package for Gnome SSHMenuApplet for CentOS 5
(e.g. see
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/testing/5/ppc/gnome-applet-sshmenu-3.15-5.el5.noarch.html).
The package sshmenu (which I found here:

Latest Pidgin update problem
A while back I added the pidgin repo to my yum configuration and installed
pidgin. it has automatically updated itself a time or two since without
trouble.
but now that Pidgin 2.1.0 is out, it won't update properly. Yum finds
a couple of libpurple packages to update as well as pidgin-devel, but
not the pidgin package itself:
