Slow Copy WinXX - Linux/Samba :-(
I never thought it would happen to me, but it did... I have read threads about slow copies from WinXX to Linux/Samba on the list in the past, but I don't recall a concise answer regarding what the cause was. THE PROBLEM: Trying to copy an 8 meg file from Win95 to my Linux/Samba box (named "Nemesis" - for good reason), the transfer speed slows to a crawl. The Win95 copy dialog box

smbd error: Matchname failed on (machine name)
Listmates, Samba has been trouble free for some time, but I have a very strange error related to one machine on my network that is filling my logs with smb errors. The box in question "ripper" is a normal WinXP box that is dual-boot with SuSE 10.3. The errors are received every 30 minutes or so: Aug 21 17:04:03 archangel smbd[3116]: [2009/08/21 17:04:03, 0]

samba 3.3.4-1, lib/util_sock.c:matchname(1749) error??
Listmates, On my Archlinux server with samba 3.3.4-1, I am getting a smbd error that is filling my logs and I'm not sure why. The box 'ripper.3111skyline.com' shown below is a dual boot box and spends most of its life and mom's XP box and masquerades as an openSuSE 10.3 box the rest of the time. There are seven other boxes on this lan with 5 others being dual boot XP/openSuSE

One account can access samba, another can't.
My wife and I each have our own workstation dual-booting WinXP and Gentoo Linux. We also have a third which runs Gentoo all the time. I wanted to set up samba on the third box and provide some extra storage space for both our Windows installs. It worked for a few days, then all of a sudden it stopped letting my account (michael) in while still letting my wife's account (amy) use the share.

kernel & automount errors in messages log
Hello all, I have a few strange errors in my messages log I can't fix. My system works great, it just bugs me that I have error (or apparent errors) that I don't know about. I get automount errors regurlarly (daily) that are reflected in the last four lines of the log file excerpt below. My misc and net directories are there, but I can't write to them either. The properties say that

Logging denied connections from outside LAN
Greetings - I have an interesting issue that I am trying to understand. This may not be a direct Samba related issue, but the results of the issue are showing up in the Samba log, so I thought I would start here. Please direct me elsewhere if there is a better forum for this question. I have spent some time Googling and have a small understanding of what is going on, but now my Google-fu

VPN server and logon to Samba PDC
My goal is to make VPN access to our Samba PDC (FreeBSD 7.0) so that users can access there home shares from Windows clients. I have read the instructions at http://samba.org/ftp/unpacked/lorikeet/pppd/final-report.pdf, but I can't make it work. Don't know if is due to my lack of skills or has something to do with the Popop functionality in FreeBSD. Following the instructions, i made a

<earlier, David Rankin wrote to no avail:> Mates, I have been watching a developing problem over the past few weeks. Most likely a M$ patch to XP that has caused problems. What happens is that XP clients try to open the standard "File" -> "Open" dialog (like in word, or whatever) and the file open dialog hangs and stops responding for 15 seconds or so. I have

can't open files off of samba shared drive on w2k/xp workstations
Hi, I have somewhat successfully got Samba working where as users can map the drives to their win2k/xp workstations and wrote to the folders they are given permissions to. They can write to the folder, delete folders, write files, delete files, view the file listing, however, they can't open files. For instance, if there is a word document, they can't just double click on the share and

wbinfo recognises my username, smbclient does not
Hello folks. Brand new 3.5.4 install of samba, on a brand new redhat 5.5 install, trying to connect to a windows domain and allow AD users access. I used a series of how-tos to set things up, and modified the smb.conf and krb5.conf files from an existing (working, 3.2.8) system. I apparently join the domain ok, and I can authenticate an AD user using wbinfo, but when I try to use the same user

perhaps there was something wrong with the smb.conf file, which I had mostly copied over from another machine. So, in desperation, I commented out every single line in the file, and added back the most basic configuration options until I could connect to the samba share with smbclient. Then, to discover what was causing my problem, I added back the other commented lines one at a time to see
