Samba 3.0.25b: smbd 99% CPU utilisation with opened MS Word doc
Hi I'm trying to upgrade from Samba 3.0.23c on FC4 to 3.0.25b from Samba sources. Everything appears to function correctly until an MS word document is opened from a share - the file opens but the smbd process in question rockets to 99%+ CPU, stays there & needs kill -9'ing to stop it. This happens reliably. I have an appropriate strace & a level 7 log but can't see anything

Replace NT 4.0 with Samba PDC but keep PC WINS *Advice*
I am in the process of researching and testing SAMBA as a PDC. The only thing I am uncertain about is that our billing scheduling system is running WINS and our 110 pc's are configured to use it for wins resolution. I would like to leave WINS on that system but can it coexist with a SAMBA server acting as PDC but not doing WINS? I will be replacing an NT 4.0 PDC which has operated with

Repeat Review Request
Folks, I like criticism! Please give me lots of it - particularly in respect of the updated "Samba-Guide". It should now be up on the Samba mirror sites. You can download it from: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf I have incorporated all feedback into this book. Did I get it right this time or should I give up? So far, not a word of feedback is deafening! Is it

Samba4 - Shared folder not showing security tab in windows explorer
I am able to join Windows 7 work station to domain. I logged in as domain administrator in windows work station for testing. I am able to see netlogon, sysvol and the homes shared folders in the windows explorer in the client. However, I am not getting security tab when I right click on homes share and choose properties. Security tab is available when I right click and choose properties on

Sync passwd and smbpasswd
I am having problems setting up the smbpasswd command to sync the /etc/passwd and $SAMBAHOME/private/smbasswd files. My passwd program (/usr/bin/passwd %u) doesn't seem to want to wait around for smbpasswd to send it a second password for confirmation. I am running Solaris 2.5.1 (103640-23) on an Ultra 2300 and using Samba 1.9.18p10 compiled with gcc 2.8.1. I thought that I had this running

Several privileged users
Hi, I have to setup a samba-3 configuration where several users have the right to join a machine in the domain. I've done a test with "username map between root and a user" but this solution is not acceptable because the user is considered as root even for a normal login (the user's informations (sambaProfile,...) are not used) Is this a workaround ? Thank you, Rapha?l

Does Amazon.com blocks scraping?
Hi there Does anyone know if Amazon.com has any sort of server side script that tries to block scraping activities? I first noticed that if I didn?t change the agent alias, it would fetch a page exactly like the normal one, but without the intial search field(maybe a silly way to prevent scraping). Then after it, I changed to some other alias, and submit a search. I got the result page as

Re: administrator privileges
I experienced the following problem with an apparent permissions Catch-22 where there's no "root" user to bootstrap from with Samba-LDAP, and found several other people experienced it too. I eventually figured out why a few people are plagued by this problem while most have never seen it, and I solved it. For everyone else who experiences a similar problem, the explanation and

smb/cifs share network speed testing
Is there any piece of software that I can use to run between a client and a linux or windows server with a smb/cifs share that will test network speed, latency, sustained read/writes, multiple file create, read, write, close, etc.. etc.. over X period time? I'm testing a Centos server with samba and Windows 2k3/8 servers on the other end of a T1 connection and while I know the T1 bandwidth

Where is the tdbsam password database file?
I'm curious to know where the tdbsam password database file is kept on my Fedora 7 system. Using the unmodified smb.conf file that shipped with Fedora 7, I've enabled users using smbpasswd, and successfully accessed shares. I just can't figure out where the password database is located: [root@box ~]# service smb start [root@box ~]# setsebool samba_enable_home_dirs on [root@box ~]#

Samba 4.0 alpha releases in production environments
Just curious, is anyone using Samba 4.0 alpha releases in a production environment and how is it working for you? I run an environment of about 500+ Windows XP on a Netware environment and have considerable Samba 3.0 experience, but I'd like to use GPO's to control and clean up a lot of previous tech support problems. Any thoughts? Eric -- Eric J. Feldhusen Director of Technology

iPod Touch/iPhone VPNs with CentOS.
I am looking at options for VPN connections from iPhones and iPod Touches to CentOS systems. We use OpenVPN for connections with Windows, Mac OS X, and other Linux systems, but there don't appear to be any OpenVPN clients for iPhones (presumably because there are no tun/tap interfaces available yet). My experiences getting IPsec running on CentOS systems with OpenVPN have not been pretty.

Samba server visibility
I must be missing something somewhere. I can't get our Samba server to show up when I look in Network Neighborhood under XP. If I type in \\servername\path, it won't find it, however if I use the IP, it works fine. Now, experience tells me that I'm having to type the IP because it's not resolving the name. Well fine, I can fix that, however I don't recall doing that

upgrading from 3.0.13 to 3.0.23
Hi all I just downloaded the latest sable rlease (3.0.23b). I compiled it and installed it without any problems. When I restart servers, shares configured like this : [xdavid] read list = user browseable = no path = /home/users/xdavid write list = xdavid only user = yes user = xdavid works fine, but these shares (using goups names) doesn't
