Cannot read strange filenames
Hello List, on a windows-pc are files with an EURO-Sign "?" included in the filenames. This is working between all XP and 2000 Clients. But if i try to access such a file from a linux-box, I cannot read this files. I switched to the german charset with EURO Sign but no success. Then i tried the cifs instead of smbfs. But the same effect. Switching to UTF-8 doesn't work too.

Issues with cifs mounts following Samba upgrade to 3.0.23a
My LAN includes a server machine running FC4, with several shares mounted with Samba. Yesterday, I upgraded the packages on the FC4 machine, and these included Samba, which is now at 3.0.23a. Unfortunately, this seems to have broken the mounted shares for my Ubuntu 6.06 installation on my Acer 1682WLMI laptop. The cifs module on Ubuntu reports as version 1.39. The symptoms are that I can

delivering mail to public mbox with permission 660?
I am migrating a couple old RH servers running sendmail and UW-IMAP to a new Ubuntu 10.04 servers running Postfix and Dovecot. I have everything working reasonably well except that the permissions of newly created mbox mail folders is always 600. I have reviewed the archives, google, and double checked everything is as suggested in the Dovecot Wiki / SharedMailboxes / Permissions. I am

Performance Issue: Red Hat vs SuSE
Hi All, A couple of days ago I posted a query here about the loss of performance on my backup server after I moved from Red Hat 7.3 to SuSE 8.1. It appears as though, with no hardware or script changes, that my backup process takes 4 hours longer with SuSE 8.1. I'm doing (what I think is) a very simple script that basically employs SMBMOUNT, CP, and DIFF. Like this:

[OT] Red Hat binary compatibility, from Red Hat Linux 4.0 to Fedora Core 3 (and RHEL4) ...
I wrote part of a FAQ last November, and if you're interested in the breakdown of GCC, GLibC and kernel adoption since Red Hat Linux 4.0, you'll want to read this: http://www.geocities.com/thebs413/RH-Distribution-FAQ-3.html I've been loosely working on a "Linux Configuration Management" book covering Red Hat distributions since. I might update this FAQ if I have

Suggesting to have download.file() reflect a new option
The "auto" method of downloading a file cannot cope with a proxy firewall requiring authentication. However, wget can handle this very easily (using e.g. ~/.wgetrc). While it is feasible to add the required method="wget" to calls such as update.packages(), this approach is rather tedious and could easily be controlled by use of a new option. Below is a simple patch to

Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge much slower with 0.9.16
RA2:YR is a 2D game - I think it probably uses DirectDraw. It runs slower with 0.9.16 and now the in game cursor flickers. Besides minor audio problems it ran fine in 0.9.15. I tried setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D\DirectDrawRenderer to "gdi". It made no difference. Is that the corrent way to turn off the new DirectDraw changes?

Winbind Understanding
I would like some clarification on Winbind's capabilities. I have winbind up and fully functional. I can use wbinfo -g, wbinfo -u, etc.. I would like to use winbind to correlate sids to uid on filesystems mounted with smbfs or cifs. In reading further I see lots of information about doing this on EXT3 (or Linux filesystems that support ACL). Perhaps, I had misunderstood the purpose of

Installing oVirt on 32bit dual core server with Fedora Core 12
Hi, My setup is 1 management server and 1 server for virtual guests. Red Hat Directory Server
Anyone played with or know the status of Red Hat Directory Server on CentOS 5? I had some problems getting this to work on CentOS 4.4, but am very interested in using this instead of regular OpenLDAP as it supports two way synchronization to Active Directory. Noah

Red Hat Directory Server + Fedora Directory Server version correlation?
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knows about version-number correlation between RHDS and FDS. I've sofar been quite unable to find anything about it. The latest version of seems to be 7.1SP3: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/dir-server/ And the latest version of FD seems to be 1.0.4: http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Download Most sources I could find state that "FDS and RHDS

Red Hat 5.2''s login doesn''t do PAM session management correctly
This is a "heads up" for anyone who relies on PAM session management in order to clean up after a login session. Red Hat 5.2''s login does not perform PAM session management correctly, potentially resulting in sessions which lose their authentication before the login shell starts. login.c in Red Hat 5.2''s util-linux package was modified so that it no longer forks a

Debian vs. Red Hat
Can anyone provide me with their (fairly) impartial opinion on which major current distribution (Debian 1.2 or Red Hat 4.0) provides better security? I have heard a lot of people sticking up for their favorite, but few real facts/insights on them from a security point of view. Red Hat seems to be favored by novices for no-brainer installation and graphical configuration programs (which

Switchtower to Red Hat with Lighttpd
It looks and acts like it should all work, but after I run a "rake deploy", Lighttpd never responds to another request. I have to go and kill and restart Lighttpd, which sort of defeats the purpose of using Switchtower. Is anyone else having similar problems? -- Regards, Lori
