hi, i'm using suse 7.3 with samba 2.2.8 as PDC and openldap for authentification in network with wfw-, winnt-, w2k-clients. everything works fine. because not every client has the same configuration (same progs, same path's, hardware...), i got problems, if a user dosn't login from his ordinary workstation, his roaming-profile doesn't work fine. now, how can i force users only

restrict what users can log onto each workstation
I have a Samba server with Windows XP clients, and roaming profiles for every user. At this moment everyone can log onto any workstation, but it shouldn't be like that: there are some workstations where anyone can log into, but three of them should be restricted to some specific users. I thought about making local users for them, but we need all users to have roaming profiles, I can't

Workstation crash after login to PDC
Finally figured out why I couldn't login to my samba 3.0.2a PDC, I had a mismatch in one of the SID's. Now that I have that figured out my workstations crash when logging in after applying the personal settings. The error is in a window titled SAS window:winlogon.exe - Application Error with the message being instruction at 0x00450056 referenced memory at 0x00000000 the memory could not

domain user notifications?
Is there a method of notifying users of a domain about a server or print queue reboot/shutdown/maintenance/problem? Our old Netware servers used to do this, and everyone seems to rely on the fact that they will be told they have X minutes remaining on a power failure, ect. Ideas on this anyone?

NULL sessions - Listing shares anonymously - restrict anonymous
Hi, I am running 2.2.5 and I would like to know if the "restrict anonymous" as been implemented correctly, as it was supposed to behave from the start, in order to deny ALL anonymous connections as stated in the man : "When restrict anonymous is yes, all anonymous connections are denied no matter what they are for." Ive been reading some dev mailing lists and someone said

restrict anonymous used wbinfo -A what next?
I am trying to get samba to work with winbind and still have the DC (w2k) use restrict anonymous. If I run wbinfo -A it will allow me to enumerate all the user accounts and groups but I still get prompted for a password when I try to access samba shares. I can turn off restrict anonymous and I can access the samba box all day with no problem but as soon as I turn on restrict anonymous it breaks.

sambaUserWorkstations (with LDAP) not working with Groups of Computers ?
Hi, I'm trying to use the sambaUserWorkstations option to allow users to log on certain computers only. This option looks great... In fact it looks now a lot better than the 'ldap filter' one than was deprecated with samba 3.0.20... The fact is, if the sambaUserWorkstations option works well with machine names, it doesn't seem to work when specifying groups of machines.

FreeBSD and Samba Windbind questions
Hello, I am getting ready to migrate from a Novell Server and wanted to use Samba as a PDC. I am planning on using FreeBSD, Samba 3 and LDAP. The problem I encounter is that one of our business applications is only supported on Novell or Windows. What I was hoping to do was configure a Samba PDC and have a W2K server that houses that application join the Samba Domain. Then when I access the

Can't add a Win XP Pro SP 2 workstation to domain
We are running Mac OS X Server v. 10.4.2, which comes packaged with Samba 3. The problem I am running into is that when I attempt to add a workstation running Windows XP Service Pack 2 to the domain, it won't add the workstation. I can see that the machine account was added to SMB (in Mac OS X, this is listed under Computer Account in Workgroup Manager), but after I add the machine and then

Machine account pasword change failed (NT 4)
Hi guys and girls, I run a Samba-3.0 PDC for N.T. workstations on a Slackware Linux box. I often see the following error in the N.T. workstation's event log: Changing machine account password for account "xxxxx$" failed with the following error: The handle is invalid. Any ideas what this could be ? I'm not using PAM in any way. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. --

follow up to novell file issue and a question about "fstype"
Ok, I've done some further research into this one: It appears that installing the Novell client on a Win machine has the effect of replacing the file copy command with one from Novell. It also seems that the NTFS filesystem has spaces for extra metadata, and the the new Novell command is using those to store it's ACL. I"m guessing that this metadata is not storable via Samba,

Samba 3: "restrict anonymous = 2" breaks domain joining
Hello, Despite not having received any input on my last problem, I managed to work it out and now I've finally got a working Linux PDC with ldapsam and non-root domain admin. As it turned out, the problems were caused by a combination of Samba settings, too tight security on Windows boxes and, in case of XP x64, a need for some patches against Samba source code; here I would like to ask a

Active DNS registration on join realm?
Dear Samba members, I am wondering if on joining a realm (with security=ADS), samba 3.x server gets automatically registered with MS Dynamic DNS server. My test with Samba 3.0.14a on linux did not reveal any such capability. But may be because I did not use the correct option? I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance, -Arup Biswas

Synching samba passwords to W2k passwords
This is a quick question.....Is there any way to allow W2K users access to a share on a linux machine without having to have synched passwords between samba and W2k...(maybe just leave the password field for samba blank?). A while back we had Novell servers and were constantly worrying about password synchs, is this going to be the case with RedHat as well?

converting NA/non-NA's to a binary variable
Dear R colleagues, I am trying to create a new column in a data frame, which converts values and NA's from another column into binary format. Essentially I need the NA's to become 1 and the rest to be 0. The code I wrote is returning the following error message: Error in if (mort[i, 4] != NA) mort[i, 8] <- 0 else if (mort[i, 4] == : missing value where TRUE/FALSE needed

'multi-layered' authentication
I need to allow [read] access to a Samba server using both IP filtering & UserIDs . For a given list of IP subnets, any user should have access. Outside these 'trusted' subnets, I need to do User authentication. I can handle the User authentication OK in several ways. However, I don't see any way to do the 'short circuit' allow for some IPs, then use User authentication
