WINS Server: Use Samba or Windows?
Hi, The Samba documentation recommends that a Windows WINS server is used for WinNT/200x clients, i.e. http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/docs/man/howto/NetworkBrowsing.html#id2531484 says "In a mixed NT/200x server and Samba environment on a Wide Area Network, it is recommended that you use the Microsoft WINS server capabilities." But there's no justification as to why Samba

WINS and INet~Services name
Hi, I've posted before about the problem with WINS and the INet~Services name IIS uses. (http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2005-August/110189.html) The problem I get is when any host running IIS tries to renew its names with the Samba WINS server (e.g. after the default 5-day period) the renewal fails for *all* names for the server. As I understand it the problem is with Samba's WINS

Accessing member server prompts for credentials
Hi, I'm trying to join a server as an AD member but it isn't working. I do: kinit ADMINISTRATOR@DOMAIN1.CO.UK which prompts for the password and displays nothing else. Then I do: net ads join -U Administrator%XXXXX which returns: Using short domain name -- DOMAIN1 Joined 'SERVER1' to realm 'DOMAIN1.CO.UK' So all looks OK, but when I try to browse the shares on

xp clients can't auth after reboot without smb restart
I currently have several fresh installs of XP that will connect to shares, but will not reconnect after a workstation reboot. These are workstations that are not joined to the domain. Only accessing shares from a local profile, but using the same user/pass to login as to connect to Samba. I get various errors at that point. Upon reboot, attempting to access the share generates: "An error

File Locked
Hi, I've got a Word document on a Samba share that I can't rename, overwrite or open. Attempting to rename it gives: Cannot rename Filename: There has been a sharing violation. Attempting to open it gives: Filename.doc is locked for editing by 'another user'. This is on a NAS box so I can't say which Samba version it is. There are no temporary files in the share to show who

Mounting for non-root users
This has been asked before but the answers haven't worked for me.I upgraded from 2.2.7 to 3.0.0. I used to connect to Windows sharesusing smbmnt in .bash_profile as a non-root user having chmod 4755smbmnt. Now this doesn't work: - smbmount won't let non-root users run it (even after a chmod) - smbmnt says "Failed to find real path for mount point" - mount -t smbfs says

OT: NIC
Folks, I'm trying to add a network interface card to my SUSE 9.3 box, and I'm not having much luck with a US Robotics version. What manufacturer do any of you use in your machines--either 10/100MB or GigE NIC? Hello, I already setup a samba server as PDC for windows client to logon and working fine now with the following config: - redhat 7.3 - samba 2.2.7a Then I try to access the samba share from Redhat 8, I can use smbclient to access the share without problem but I can't access the share with "KDE's Konqueror" (smb://NetbiosName/), it can show all shares, when I double one of

Browsing in AD networks
Hello, sorry to bother you with probably another stupid question, but googl'ing didn't help here. Can someone give me an overview of how network browsing from windows workstations is supposed to work in AD networks? I have recently upgraded a samba server running an NT4-style domain with classicupgrade. The workstations are Windows 7 (with the registry fix applied to be able to join an

File Lock Timeout
Hi, I've seen posts (but no answers) about clearing a file lock on a Samba share. Presumably this kind of thing happens when the program abnormally terminates and doesn't close its open files. I've got a file that smbstatus reports as: 1216 DENY_WRITE 0x20089 RDONLY NONE /shares/share1/Files/december.xls Fri Jan 12 12:51:30 2007 Trying to open this in Excel

Hi all, I just downloaded the latest R-patched tarball [Version 1.9.1 Patched (2004-09-21)] and ran into an error during compilation. This is on FC2 and the error is as follows: dounzip.c: In function `do_unzip': dounzip.c:144: error: syntax error before '/' token make[3]: *** [dounzip.o] Error 1 In reviewing the source file, there appears to be an errant '/' on line 144. smbd dies intermittantly & oplocks
G'day, Brief LAN Layout: We have 2 vlans, 1 has WinNT 4 sp6a running as the PDC, there are 2 Slackware 7.1, 2.2.19 kernel, boxes, running samba 2.2.0, which both are on the 2 vlans. One linux box is the PDC for it's vlan. Both linux boxes run 2 copies of samba together, though the problem of smbd dieing was there when only 1 samba copy was running on each box. Cients are Win9x, with a

Samba members in NT4.0 to AD upgrade
Hi, I've got an NT4.0 domain that I'm planning to upgrade to Active Directory. I've got a couple of Samba member servers in the domain, various versions above 3.0. So I have two questions: 1. Are there any gotchas with this scenario or will the Samba clients just keep working as NT4-esque clients. 2. Is it possible to "upgrade" a Samba member server to be an Active

Random files in homedir gets deleted
On one of my systems I seem to loose a file or two from time to time. Last night, one of my files (/home/online/sh/NattjobbPrivat.sh) was deleted/removed/vanished. Another time it was /home/online/sh/daemon that was deleted. But I can't seem to find anything strange in the logs or in the history, nor would any of my scripts running in crontab mess with those files. Where can I look for

W2K Server and Workstation can't join SMB/LDAP domain
I have a SMB Domain set up with a PDC and BDC. The BDC is joined to the PDC domain fine and shows up in the LDAP directory. I can add and delete users to the LDAP directory. I can use the user accounts to access the Linux boxes. My W2K boxes see the domain and domain servers when browsing. I can access the shared drive on the PDC. I cannot join the Windows servers to the domain. I get an error

Wiki (pjsip+realtime) says don't put the transports into realtime. Still true?
Hi, The asterisk wiki page says: "Sorcery.conf allows you to try to configure other PJSIP objects such as transport using realtime and it currently won't stop you from doing so. However, some of these object types should not be used with realtime and this can lead to errant behavior." Which objects and is this still true in 1.13.1 ? Thanks, Antonio. PS:

Problem with survival
It is likely a problem with survival, since 2.9 merged in a large number of changes that had occured in my source tree that had not propogated to the R tree my test suite doesn't have a test for this particular case (2 factors) and - Murphy's law applies: although almost every possible case is covered in the test suite, any new error will hit an omitted combination of
