Printer accounting/quota ?
Hi all,
I am about to install a Samba server at a local school, and i need some
advice and/or experience from others who have worked on a installation
of that type/size.
My plan is to roll-out a Samba server (of course), with LDAP back-end,
and a number of printer queue's via CUPS.
There will be aprox. 1000 user accounts, mostly students.
The school has asked for a solution that would

paid-for-print
Hi there,
I'm newbie in Samba, so I beg for your excuse if my questions are
stupid.
Is it possible to use Samba as a "paid-for-print" server?
If U know something about another free "paid-for-print" software, please
let me know.
10x in advance,

Windows XP SP2 (Official) and Samba 3
I've looked through the archives and the only information I can find regarding
Windows XP SP2 is RC2. Has anyone out there had ANY experience with XP SP2
Official and a Samba 3 domain?

Print speed with an HP Laserjet 4
I've also posted this message to the lprng list, but as I'm currently
not sure where the problem lies, I'm posting it here too in the hope
that someone has a clue.....
I have recently installed a printer accounting system on my systems, and
changed the print model for some of my users. In most cases, this has
been fine, but users who are using HP Laserjet 4 printers are

3.0.6 & "string overflow by 1"
I updated one of my file servers to 3.0.6, and while file serving is
improved (no M$-Office file already open messages), every time I access
a printer my logs flood with messages like to those below. It seems I
can set printer properites, etc... but when I print the jobs seem to go
to never-never land (still researching where the jobs go).

Shared profiles under XP?
Hiya.
Is it possible to share profiles between different users with Samba
3.0CVS acting as a PDC, and XP Workstations?
All users are using the same profile share; the concept is that there's
an "Admin" user which can read/write to this, so I can setup things
such as Internet Explorer settings / Desktop/Start Menu items / color
scheme, etc..., and all other users only have read

3.0.8 and looong logout time
I've got two WinXP SP2 users. Roaming profiles. One of them takes about 25
seconds to log out unless she has made pretty drastic changes to her profile
(My Documents, etc). My second user takes upwards of 3 minutes to log out,
even if he has just logged in, not opened a thing or made changes, and then
logged back out. Below is part of a strace as I don't know what I'm looking

Print Cost Capture
My company would like to start capturing printing costs. Is there a way
to configure the printing interface to prompt users for a billing code?

Dell OptiPlex GX620 can longer boot from CD with syslinux-5.X
Same CD. Any Linux distribution without the 5.X series boots on this
machine. We can use 4.06 and it boots just fine. It's not the computer's
hardware. Like I said, we can take the CD out of the GX620 and place it in
the 9010 and it boots. Put 4.06 on the CD, and they both boot.

structuralObjectClass and smbldap-tools
Sorry, if this has been dealt with before, but I couldn't find it.
I tried installing openldap 2.2 + samba 3. Currently I only have one
install of openldap 2.0 and samba 2.2 running.
Now, it all looks quite good, but the smbldap-tools do not add the
necessary structuralobjectClass entries, so using the tools fails.
I was able to manually change the first populate - which could be
exported

Dell OptiPlex GX620 can longer boot from CD with syslinux-5.X
We have tried compiling the binaries our self and using the pre-compiled in
the syslinux tar ball as well. It just locks up with the text we provided.
The problem is booting from CD, booting from USB works. I suspect the
problem is in isolinux.bin. The CD only fails on this one machine. It works
on everything else we tried. 4.06 worked without any issue on this same
machine. Parted Magic has been

Dell OptiPlex GX620 can longer boot from CD with syslinux-5.X
System: Dell OptiPlex GX620 (Both BIOS A10 and A11 affected)
Medium: Physical CD-RW
Observed: ISOLINUX 5.11 0x51D1AE48 ETCD_ is the only line displayed
on-screen. A flashing cursor trails at the end of the line. Escape key does
not return boot: prompt.
Line1 of syslinux.cfg: DEFAULT vesamenu.c32
Note: Reverting to syslinux-4.06 allows for successful booting on the same
system.

Page Accounting with Samba
Hi all,
We have a Debian Sarge Box with Samba 3.0.14a and Cups 1.1.23-10
for sharing files and printers.
For printing we had cups configured to understand postscript files
produced by the postscript driver in the windows clients. With this
configuration we have no problems for doing Page Accounting with cups.
But we had a lot of problems with some documents (powerpoint,

LibVorbis licensing inquiry
Hello,
I am developing a game engine which will support Ogg Vorbis playback.
If I were to use LibOgg and LibVorbis, would I then have to release my own product under BSD, thus requiring anyone who created games with it to do the same and reference Xiph.org in their game's credits?
While I can definitely include a license file with my library, enforcing my own end-users to do the same would be

Plop Boot Manager quit working with 5.10
I have updated syslinux in Parted Magic's test version to the 5.10 release.
With 4.06 I booted plop like this:
LINUX /boot/plpbt/plpbt.bin
Now it says /boot/plpbt/plpbt.bin... ok
Booting kernel failed: Invalid argument
Other "extras" like IPXE, HDT, memtest86+, chntpw, Super Grub Disk, etc...
all work with 5.10. Revert to 4.06 and plop works again.
Is this a problem with syslinux

print quota with CUPS
Hi,
I am running CUPS-1.1.19 and Samba-2.2.8a on Debian 3.0 to serve both
Windows and Unix clients. Has anyone got print quotas for Cups working?
When I set quota using lpadmin, it does not limit the pages to be
printed, in other words doesn't do anything.
Any help is highly appreciated.

Dell OptiPlex GX620 can longer boot from CD with syslinux-5.X
I'm not exactly sure what you need. Is this it?
ISOLINUX 4.06 0x513e88f5
isolinux: Starting up, DL = 82
isolinux: Loaded spec packet OK, drive = 82
isolinux: Main image LBA = 0000011D
isolinux: Main image read, jumping to main code...
I created an iso with isolinux-debug.bin as the boot loader and booted it
on that machine. If this is not what you are looking for, what are correct
steps?

Question about replacing the web interface with an audio stream
Okay, but you’d have to be able/willing to employ a dedicated IP to that, plus run Icecast as root.
What are the negative technical implications of running icecast on port 8000 (suitable for most users) and then running a reverse proxy to accommodate public wifi with port restrictions?
