Centos5, Compiz, and Nvidia
Hi! Just did a TEST install of centos5 on an old PIII box. one of the things I wanted to see was the fancy desktop eye-candy of compiz and/or beryl. This box has a nvidia 6600 series card, and I've isntalled the Nvidia drivers (download from nvidia and run their installer). I used the software updater to install compiz (didn't show up on original install, perhaps I didn't hold my

HeartBleed in RHEL
I know I'm slightly OT here, asking about RHEL, but since Centos is now a part of RH, I'm hoping I won't be summarily ejected. I've seen several articles that listed Centos 6.x as vulnerable, but DID NOT LIST RHEL 6. I'd think that if Centos 6.x is vulnerable, then so would RHEL 6.x, since Centos is made from RHEL sources. Does anyone know for sure either way? thanks! --

Procmail/Formail problem on 6.3
Hi! In the process of making mysystem work again, having just done a reinstall of 6.3 x86_64. I have a considerable collection of procmail recipes for filtering mail in various ways, and since the upgrade none of 'em is working. procmail passes every mail thru spambayes, which gives back a rating on spamminess. this happens, so it's not as if procmail is simply punting. that is

fingerprint reader on C-7 ???
Hi all! I just got a new (to me) used laptop (HP EliteBook 8530p) and find that it has a fingerprint reader. Wondering if it could be made to work for me (Centos-7) I did a lot of googling (well, actually duck-duck-go-ing) and found a ton of hits on either setting it up in Windoze, or others wondering if it can be used in Linux. Some info on setting it up in Ubuntu, and a couple of pages on

modern motherboard for centos-5
I'm considering upgrading, and am trying to choose a modern motherboard that nevertheless fully works with Centos5/RHEL5. Though I'm partial to AMD processors, and would like to use one in my new configuration, that's not a requirement, if the most appropriate board happens to be intel-compatible. However, given the way ASUS is dumping LInux and crawling more firmly into bed with

claiming unsused space back
If you are using XFS - there is mount option "discard|nodiscard" From XFS man page: discard|nodiscard Enable/disable the issuing of commands to let the block device reclaim space freed by the filesystem. This is useful for SSD devices, thinly provisioned LUNs and virtual machine images, but may have a performance impact. Note: It is currently

Gnome panels
Hi! Just installed Centos 5 (I've been running 4.x which was an upgrade from previous versions, for a long time), but this one was a fresh install. Now Gnome gives me the two panel configuration (one at top, one at bottom) but I prefer the single, larger panel at the bottom. Anyone know how to tweak Gnome to revert to the single-panel form? Thanx! -- ---- Fred Smith -- fredex at

plymouth themes problem
Hi all! I was playing with plymouth themes on a c7 box. I found a page on redhat, in their rhel7 documentation that describes how to change to a different plymouth screen: plymouth-set-default-theme --list to find out what themes are installed. then I installed the remaining bunch the yum had available. so then installing one by doing plymouth-set-default-theme <theme name> dracut -f

dmarc auth on incoming email
Just reading up on DMARC, toying with setting it up to auth against incoming emails. (but not configure my domain to use dmarc, or at least not yet) ran into an article about opendmarc, which is available on epel. but when I took a look at the opendmarc website and the git pages it doesn't appear to have been updated in several years. while I see that it is still available from epel, I

setting up incoming PPP on centos 4.4
hi gang! I'm interested in setting up incoming PPP on a system at work that has a fresh (not upgrade) Centos 4.4 on it. All the documentation I've found for that shows using mgetty to do it, and seems pretty straightforward. However, that machine doesn't have a binary named mgetty anywhere. It does have a mgetty-sendfax RPM installed, but it does not provide a binary named mgetty.

Tesseract OCR enginer
Has anyone here tried the new Tesseract OCR engine that google has recently released? I gave it a whirl last night. IT compiles more or less fine on Centos 4.4 if you don't mind lots of warnings. Took a scanned image I already had that contained a column of newspaper text, GIMP'ed it to cut everything but the text, increased contrast to get rid of grayish background, saved as

plug in phones, speaker does not mute.
Hi all! Using C6 on an Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 motherboard with AMD six core FX6300. That board uses Realtek ALC892 audio chipset. For the first time since I got that motherboard I tried plugging in headphones to the front panel speaker output. I was somewhat displeased to note that the speakers don't mute when that happens. I recall seeing info on that in Fedora, but not Centos, and

new Centos 4.4 install--display update very SLOW
Hi! I just installed Centos 4.4 on a machine at work, yesterday. Mostly it went well with just a couple of glitches. One of them is slow video performance. No, I'm not playing 3d games at work! :) Scrolling/repainting terminal windows is plainly MUCH slower than it is on my Centos 4.4 desktop at home. Machine at home is an Athlon XP 2600+ with one gig of RAM. Machine at work is a P4 2.26

Latest Pidgin update problem
A while back I added the pidgin repo to my yum configuration and installed pidgin. it has automatically updated itself a time or two since without trouble. but now that Pidgin 2.1.0 is out, it won't update properly. Yum finds a couple of libpurple packages to update as well as pidgin-devel, but not the pidgin package itself: --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please
