Microsoft hotfix MS04-011, breaks Samba password change.
Hi all, I wanted to give an update on this as I know this MS Hotfix is critical and must be applied to protect against the (latest) Microsoft worm. I think I've found the problem in the code, and am currently testing a fix for this (not in the release to others to test stage yet). As soon as I'm reasonably confident I'll put a patch out there for others to test, and we'll

FYI - Why RPMs are important
Someone emailed me directly when I was asking about the 8.0 RPMs, and why I didn't just compile it. Due to the production nature of our servers which run practially 24/7, I can do an "rpm -Uhv samba.rpm" and then do an "smb restart" with very little impact. If I move to non-rpm versions, I am forced to compile first, remove the RPM, which is a longer downtime, then install

Fixed it myself... (ldap/winbind)
After much searching, research, compiling, and some guess work, I found my problem was wrapped around one simple fact. I didn't have the samba.schema included. I now have some suggestions: 1. If you are going to force people to use something complex, DOCUMENT it. Assume there are people like me who have no understanding of ldap. Even some automatic script should be written for people who

All I want!!!! (Winbind)
Well, I am a bit confused. I am DESPRATE to get winbind to use the same GID and UIDs on several machines... But I am having a headache doing it. I need to run an LDAP server, I guess, so I put one together with the most basic things. But I just simply can't get it to run. Is there any site or document I can read that will show a most basic LDAP setup that would run my idmaps? I just need LDAP

Big problem with the latest hotfix for win2k in comb. with a samba 3.0.2a PDC
Hi there, i've got many trouble using Win2k/SP4 (German) clients on a samba 3.0.2a PDC after applying a new hotfix by Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-011.mspx) with the number KB835732. Signing on with a local user works fine, but if any user is signing on with a domain-account, some strange things happend. The profile could'nt be loaded or some

Status on fixes for MS04-11/MS04-12/KB828741 issues
I realise that a large number of sites have been bitten by the bad interaction between this hotfix, and Samba. I have finally managed to spend some time looking into this, and have reproduced it in my test environment. There appears to be an issue with the NTLMSSP layer used by windows clients to wrap password change requests. Fortunately, I have also shown that it is possible to construct a

You do not have permission to change your password
We recently migrated from WindowsNT to Samba 3.0.2a. After about two months, we have started to notice a weird problem. As user's passwords expire, they are prompted to change them. When they attempt to do so from Windows, they get a message saying "You do not have permission to change your password". However, the password IS changed. Both the Samba and LDAP Linux passwords are

Argh!!!! Winbind Stability!
Ok... This is annoying. Winbind doesn't seem to be 100% stable. I am using 3.0.4 and Winbind is attached to a Windows 2003 server. I am cheating, using RPC rather than ADS. So here is the issue. Generally everything works. I do a wbinfo -u and all comes back. I do a getent passwd and a good list comes back as well. The problem is sometimes with individual users, I do a "getent passwd

cannot change user password with CTRL-ALT-DEL
I've been running samba (currently 2.2.3a-13 for Debian) as a PDC with W2k clients for over two years. The system was up and running quite well for a long time. A couple of days ago, I installed the following MS-patches: MS04-011 MS04-012 MS04-013 MS04-014 MS02-011 Now when users try to change their password from the w2k clients using CTRL-ALT-DEL, a popup window appears saying:

unicode conversion
Hi, We have windows XP and NT workstations. They are configured to support french language. Also we export samba 2.2.8 shares through a solaris 8 machine. But these samba shares are NFS mounted file systems that come from a NAS (Celerra's EMC) In smb.conf: - Character set parameter is not set. - Codepage is 850 In the NAS file server the parameter is set to unicode. In windows

Redhat 8.0
Just in case anyone cares, I still have to run a Redhat 8.0 server, so if someone could keep the 8.0 RPMs going, I'd greatly appreciate it. As it stands, the 8.0 on the samba.org website are pretty bare. JMS

problem with patch ms04-044 breaking SMB printer shares
We recently discovered after applying Microsoft Windows 2000 patch ms04-044 to our computers we can no longer communicate with our samba server we use for spooling printers. Symptoms: - when trying to display printer queue status, we get a "Failed to open, retrying" message across the top of the queue window - from within various applications, trying to open a printer dialog box
