Start smbd and nmbd daemons on other HP Unix (version 10.20) Server
Hi everyone, I would like to know if it's possible to start the smbd/nmbd daemons from an other HP Unix server. The installation of Samba has been made on a RAID mounted on an other Unix server (the main one). We want to do that because whe need to reduce the work of the main server. bit rate
It's technically good at streaming for broadcasters because, if it encodes something simple, it drops the bitrate and therefore our costs. And it sounds great too, but you wanted technical reasons... ! By the way, Virgin Radio UK's broadband streams are now proper stereo, instead of the suspicious mono-sounding version you had for the past few weeks - so if you want your non-technical

Why is Vorbis development slow?
Dropping the other topic as requested, I'd like to follow something up in a new thread. I want to throw a question or two out there and see what responses people give (if any ;-). Assuming that you think Vorbis could have developed faster than it has done in the past year, what in your opinion has been holding it back and what remedies do you suggest? Speaking for myself, I think that it

Ogg streaming on low bandwidth
Hi, Was wondering if any gurus could tell me if it is possible to stream Ogg on very low bandwidth links (for example satellite phone) where the expected bandwidth would almost certainly be less than 19Kbps, and probably more like 10Kbps. I am not after great audio at this bitrate, mono with an audio bandwidth less than 5KHz. I have done some testing (not streaming though) listening to 8Kbps MP3

Hardware encoder.
Hi people, I am aware of the integer based DEcoder (Tremor) but am more interested in a hardware ENcoder, for use in a solid state portable recorder. Has anyone made *any* steps towards implementing an encoder in a DSP? I ask because I have been investigating MP3 hardware encoders, and apart from being very expensive (to licence - DSPs are as cheap as grains of sand in comparison) I have an

smbd & nmbd: do they have to run at the same host?
Is it ok to run nmbd on one host and smbd on another? Or it will not ok because of, say, some internal protocol requiring that the daemons always must be run in pair?

Smbd & nmbd both refuse to start?
Hello all - I'm getting a weird error message on a custom system I'm trying to setup using SAMBA. The box is running a slightly modified 2.0.37 linux kernel to run the entire OS out of a huge (128 MB) ramdrive. This particular box will be running for years before anything should fail in it. Anyhow everything works fine so far, except neither smbd or nmbd will start with the following

Problem to start services nmbd and smbd
Hi, I'm new in the Linux world, I've worked for about tree months with Debian and I've a big problem to start the samba services (nmbd and smbd). I downloaded the samba-latest.tar.gz from the www.samba.org and tried to compile it. I didn't have problem with it, but I can't initialize the services. What can I do? Thanks a lot. -- Rodrigo Hashimoto

smbd, nmbd crashes
Hi, I've been running Samba successfully for several years. I tried running Samba on a new computer under Redhat 7.3 using a test smb.conf where testparm shows no errors. Running "smb start" runs properly i.e. starts smbd and nmbd, but after a few seconds both programs stop running (running "ps aux| grep smbd" shows job running, running "ps...." again shows

Starting smbd & nmbd from xinetd ?
Hi there, Just experimenting with Samba (latest version) running on RH 7.2 Everything seems to be OK, got it running and can access shares but... smbd and nmbd have to be started manually ! ( using # /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D and then # /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D ). Any idea how I set it to start at bootup ? It doesn't show up in the services configuration under the RH
