Best way to do simple Samba for very small office.
Hi there,
My experience: I've used Samba on a couple of servers at home in
which security isn't an issue, and I've used WinBind & PAM to
authenticate a Linux mailserver from a Windows domain. I'm quite
confident about installing Samba & setting up simple shares, I can
follow a howto & even do advanced trouble-shooting but I have no
experience with many of the

SIMPLE smb.conf file
Hi,
I have been trying to get SWAT to work so I can configure it using a
GUI. But as you can see on my last message, no luck.
I have tryed what seems like hundreds of different configuration schemes
using smb.conf and cannot seem to get things right. Here is the
situation :
Local network, internet on a router/firewall. two winXP machines, two
win98 machines. No domain authentication, simple

Horrible Linux/Samba vs Windows political battle - can you help?
Greetings,
I am currently the IT Manager for a 30-person architectural firm. About
5 months ago we hired a new employee. He is quite good at what he does.
He is also extremely opinionated, particularly when it comes to computer
software, including server software.
I'm running the office server functions on RedHat, Fedora and Trustix
servers. He has managed to convince my boss that there

Ok, thanks. I know this is well out of your area, but I wonder where I would
specify the dns domain in Windows?

little help with my config please (repost with smb.conf)
Hola:
This is a repost with the smb.conf inline.
Hola:
I have configured samba-3.0.14a-2 on FC4 as a member of a Windows SBS2003
network. I used windbind to get the users from the SBS server. Users can
login into the samba machine and use home directories I created for them in
the samba machine (I cannot get to use/mount the user's home directories
from the SBS machine into the

Please review my smb.conf
Hi Rowland
Thanks for your reply. I see:
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
127.0.1.1 RPHS
So I guess I should edit the hosts file and specify RPHS's fixed IP address.
I don't think domain name is relevant for a home network so I won't specify
one. Will

you should use --sysconfdir=/etc
sysconfig is path to sysconfig, not dovecotconfig.

Hi Rowland

The Pi has a fixed IP address and hostname. I see:
$ cat /etc/hostname
RPHS
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by resolvconf
nameserver 208.67.222.123
nameserver 208.67.220.123
So the DNS seems arbitrary. I don't understand what the DNS should be for a

BUG REPORT : SWAT on Samba 2.0.7
Hi,
Nice little bug for you...
SWAT is not implementing file permissions properly when editing smb.conf. an ls -l of my smb.conf looks like this:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 804 May 5 21:45 smb.conf
Note the Owner / Group and 664 permission
If I telnet to the server, log on as an ordinary user and do a "vi /etc/smb.conf" I get the file opened "Read-Only" and

Please review my smb.conf
Hi Rowland
Thanks for your review. I will check all the points you raise, but one I do
not understand is:
"do all machines have the same dns domain name?"
What is the dns domain name in the context of a NetBios workgroup? The only
dns I am aware of is the one provided by my ISP, and that won't be relevant
I think.
Best regards
David

Re: Kareo please help
I'm well aware that I'm on here a few months late, but I was hoping to find some step-by-step answers. I'm not utilizing Kareo at the moment, but it's one of the medical billing softwares that my boss is looking into. That said, he's also not adamant about keeping Windows on our system. . . .but he doesn't want Mac either. Pretty large conundrum, right?
Anyway, my boss is

Why does simple smb.conf demand password?
I am trying to setup a simple Samba server using the instructions in the O'Reilly book
"Using Samba" first edition on a Slackware 9.1 system which uses Samba 2.2.8a.
The windows machine uses windows 98SE.
The instructions under Server Configuration starting page 93
and Disk Share Configuration starting page 96
had me setup a very simple smb.conf which should then appear in Network

Hi
I am still struggling to setup a home network of:
- 2 laptops running Windows 7 Home
- 1 laptop running Windows 10 Home
- 1 Raspberry Pi ‘RPHS’ running Rasbian Jesse and Samba 4.1.17-Debian
The current status is that only one of the Windows machines can see the Samba shared drive /mnt/data. The other machines don’t discover the Pi at all.
I’m wondering if there is something wrong with my

win.metafile on linux?
Dear R-help,
Is it possible to use win.metafile() on *nix versions of R?
I tried R 2.1.1 on FreeBSD and R 1.9.0 on redhat with no success. I need
to give some graphs generated in R to my boss so that he can modify them
in Powerpoint to fit he style of his presentation. Recommendations on
other methods are appreciated as well.
