How do I get the @#$$% job name to show instead of smbprn.yada.ya da?
I'm tinkering with this mod to my smb.conf, and can't get the actual filename to be displayed in the printed job history. It's adapted from one Joel put out on the list last year. My impression is that it works for everyone in the world but me.... All that ever shows up is smbprn.yada.yada... in the printer's history of printed jobs. print command = echo %J %p %s >>

So does the control file in the spool directory. If I send a file to

Printer Rights Fail
Hello everyone, I upgraded my Samba server on my RHL 7.2 box from 2.2.3a to 2.2.7. Almost immediately afterwards, all of my admin users suddenly were unable to access the printers that were being shared by Samba. Any idea of what is wrong and how to fix it? The messages I'm getting are that I do not have enough rights. I am using a Windows 2000 Server PDC and a lot of Windows XP Pro, and

Win2K sp4 can't print
Hi, I just installed 2 Win2K sp4 workstations on an otherwise working Samba 2.2.8a network and 2 of the 3 printers are showing "Access denied". What's up with that? The other computers that are working just fine are Win98, XP and Win2K NOT sp4. Here is part of the global section: printing = bsd load printers = yes disable spoolss = yes printcap name

Samba-CUPS interface
Hi, One of our Samba server (4.4.5) is a print server with CUPS backend . In addition we are using a print management product that is itself a backend to cups. Everything works well, except that the document names that are transmitted in the chain is of the form : "smbprn.00000648 MyDocument.pdf" . I guess that the prefix smbprn.00000648 is the samba job ID that is concatenated to the

Print Job Notification
Can anyone suggest a way to have a notification after a print job has completed. I currently have this as my print command: lpr -r -P%p %s; csh -c 'echo \"%J has started printing on %S\" | /usr/bin/smbclient -U %L -M %m -I %I' & It kind of does what I want, but notice that the message says that "Job has STARTED printing on Printer". This is because with this

Print Job Names Are Obscure
Hello all, Is there any way to stuff a more descriptive tag into a print job name? The jobs we're printing now are of the type: smbprn.003447.sdfasa I seem to remember a way to put the sending machine's name into the job name. Any help would be greatly appreciated! -adam University of Denver

I've always HATED printing with Samba
Primarily because I've never gotten it to work despite frequent efforts. Offeding printer is a Lexmark Z53 (supposedly fully supported) and when ever I try to add it to an XP box I get "Server doesn't have the right driver, do you wish to upload the driver?" then when I do it says "Cannot connect to the printer. Print Server
Ok, here's my setup: I've had a samba file server going for about a year now. It's Samba v2.05a on a RH6.0 sys. Currently we have a printer server running on a Winblows NT box. This NT box has the following printers: HP5si, (4) HP4000, and a few HP4s. All of those printers have Jet Direct ports on them. What I want to do is, move all the printers over to the Samba box and KILL the NT

Typo in Samba HOWTO collection example 19.2
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Since the samba-docs mailing list is closed, I figured this was the best place to post this. I believe there's a typo in example 19.2 ("Overriding global CUPS settings for one printer") of the official Samba HOWTO collection. The "print command" parameter in the [special_printer] section contains several echo commands,

Hi. I need to install DVD writers in a CentOS box as part of a backup setup. I want as little fuss as possible both with HW recognition and functionality. Can any of you recommend a vendor/product ? Performance of the drive is not an issue. I get confused looking at all the "+/-RW +R double layer yada yada" when skimming the hardware lists.. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

immortal connections
I have several data input functions that include a construct like the following: indat <- function(stuff) { [...] awkp <- paste("awk ...yada yada...", stuff, etc.) scan(pipe(awkp),quiet=TRUE) } I use these functions a lot, and as I do, a lengthening list of closed, but undestroyed, connections accumulates. Ultimately this appears to stuff things up and cause
