Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution ?
I thought I had read a response to this. Went something like this: Word (and lots of others such apps) do not actually deal with the original file. They create a temporary file which overwrites the original when you save the new document. The 'new' file of course inherits the new editor's ownership. Hope this helps you. Domain name lookup combinations setting?
I see in my workstation log trying to connect to my samba server an attempt to find my username. If I do wbinfo -u | grep -i davidsha, it returns INS+DavidSha. Do I need to change something so that it tries more combinations or something? I thought just passwords were case sensitive. User nobody logging in to shares instead of domain us er
I am assuming that you have guest ok = yes, and that guest is the nobody account. It sounds like your name lookups are not searching winbind, do you have winbind in your nsswitch.conf file for password and group? Have you restarted your nameservice lookups (automatic on solaris, nsadmin restart on Irix, don't know about other platforms but a reboot should certainly take care of it if you

reversing domain and user name?
I can get authentication to work on linux 7.1 with samba 3.0alpha15 if I make valid users = @"INS+Domain Users", but if I try to set valid users to just a single user: valid users = INS+DavidSha, it fails to give me access. I see the following in log.winbindd. It looks like it is looking for a domain called DavidSha?!? My winbindd separator is +. Can somebody please respond to this.

Changing ACLs as administrator
One work-around would be to create a hidden share that only Domain Admins can access. The use "force user=root" on that share. Then you'll be able to change ACL's and not be root. Just replying to let you know I'm listening =)... Sorry Dave, I'm running 2.2.3a on my Solaris 8 machine and even that still has some issues with winbind. By the way, while I have the attention of you Solaris Gurus... I was trying to make my Ultra 1 boot from an external disk on the same scssi channel as the default boot disk. I changed my /etc/vfstab for the new disk to have the right

Winbind and user-mapping
Winbindd can see the NT-user, but samba can't work with the NT-user. My System: SuSE Linux 7.2 Enterprise Server Samba-2.2.3a I have install samba by the following steps: 1. ./configure --prefix=/opt/samba-2.2.3a --with-winbind 2. make 3. make install 4. cp /tmp/samba-2.2.3a/source/nsswitch/libnss_winbind.so /lib 5. ln -s /lib/libnss_winbind.so /lib/libnss_winbind.so.2 6. vi

Re: ANY HOPE GETTING RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS? - samba3.0alpha15 - solar is 8
First, don't shout when you set the subject. It just looks like spam. >* Why does testparm complain about can't find include file? > Can't find include file Something tells me that you have an include line in your conf file in the form of include = /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf.%m which it tries to include, for every machine that accesses your server, and of course fails,

samba 3.0 -
How do I interpret what this mean? @"prfmstrt2+Domain Users" What is prfmstrt2? Is that a group created in /etc/group or the domain name? I take it the + is a winbind seperator. I modified the separator to be + instead of /, which it appears as by default because everybody seems to be using + for some reason (I thought that was for nis). My domain is INS. I tried to use

best way to work with cvs?
I use a script to get the lastest samba: #!/usr/bin/ksh echo "\npassword: cvs\n" cvs -d :pserver:cvs@pserver.samba.org:/cvsroot login cvs -z5 -d :pserver:cvs@pserver.samba.org:/cvsroot co samba Are there any other commands I could tack on or something I should do differently to make sure I am getting correct rebuilds? For example, should I tack on at the end: cd

Cant Log Into Terminal Using Winbind
List, I am unable to log into a terminal using Winbind service. I have the login file correctly modifyed and nsswitch too. I have the 2.2.5 version of SAMBA with the new winbind. SAMBA shares work great, so I think it is something else. I get this error in the messages log: Jul 9 11:46:01 alblinux sshd(pam_unix)[5463]: check pass; user unknown Jul 9 11:46:01 alblinux sshd(pam_unix)[5463]:

winbind problem on solaris (samba head)
Hello, I just buildt via cvs samba head. I used just the option --with-winbind (no pam). The first problem is that sessionid.tdb is missing after the build. I don't know how to make it make a new one (can I copy one from another server or is there something in it that would make that a bad idea?). The other problem is that wbinfo -t says secret is good, wbinfo -g/u return the correct

Winbind issues! HELP!
OK. This is becoming very frustrating!! I have Samba 2.2.3a installed on a Sun running Solaris 8. Winbind is installed and seems to be working fine. My PC users can map the Samba share via their NT domain account information (PDC is an NT4 box). As soon as I copy nsswitch/libnss_winbind.so to /lib and create the symbolic links (nss_winbind.so.1 & nss_winbind.so.2) my PC users can no

Name Resolution, Pinging
I am running redhat 7.3 with Samba 2.2.4. I was wondering if there was a way to use Samba to resolve my IPs instead of having to add all the entries to my /etc/hosts file? For instance, I would like to be able to do `ping acormany` instead of `ping <IP Address>`. We are currently using WINS on a Windows box to resolve the IPs. As of right now, I can `ping acormany` on a Windows system, but

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution?
We have a problem with file security settings changing when a file is edited by someone who is not the owner. When the edited file is saved, ownership is transferred to the person who edited the file. Also, access control settings for the file are reset to a default setting. This is a real problem, since in some cases it means that the original owner of the file no longer has permission to edit

Samba 2.2.4 on s/390
I have just compiled Samba 2.2.4 with the following configure. ./configure --with-pam --with-winbind I used the same instructions as I did go get Samba 2.2.2 working. I noticed the winbind daemon dies after about a minute. I set the debug to 10 for it and I found some confusing things. Why is it trying to connect to GIGDC1 with a null username? Is this why the connection is refused?
