cifs.ko kernel module versus smb.conf - which SMB protocol version?
Hello guys,
could someone help me better understand the mechanism of negotiating of
the SMB protocol?
I watch closely samba list and recently there was a talk about the
'smb.conf' parameters like eg. "max protocol =" etc. with regards to
Windows 10 (and other windows clients of diff versions).
I read Jeff_Layton-Linux-CIFS-Client.pdf and

Samba 4 smb.conf parameters
Dear all,
after al lot playing around with samba 4 . There are a few questions
concerning
the parameters left for the smb.conf. Where can I get a link to the
parameters
for read and write permissions and so on. It seems the old parameters are
gone.
Greetings

You need create mask = 0755 (or 0644, but watch for directory
mask). This is not like the unix umask thing, this it the

smb.conf for MS-Access and MS-Excell Files
I have a file server running with Samba over Debian Sarge 3.1 R1. This
File server store MDB and XLS files. Could anybody give me an optimal
setup for my samba server (smb.conf). Actually, the performance is very
poor.

Some questions about ./configure and smb.conf options
(sorry for my English, it's not soooo good...)
I'm playing fair well with Samba, but I've always
installed it via apt-get, and now I want to install it
from source, which allows me to create optimized and
updated binaries. Plus, I want to optimize my smb.conf
for my scenario.
As a result, I've got several questions about some
./configure and smb.conf options that I don't

per user smb.conf
Hello!
I need a user defined config file for samba. I mean there must be a file
called ~/.samba.conf or ~/.smb.conf or whatever, where a simple user can
maintain his own shares, probably under his own home dir. Is it possible
to config samba to enable "per user" samba config files, to let simple
user share their own dirs/files without the root's permission.
Does samba support

log level in 'man smb.conf'
Hi
while setting up my LAN-fileserver I've made xtensive use of the
excellent man page for smb.conf.
Except that the description of "log level" lacks a few key information,
which should be added:
What is the minimum and maximum log level?
What is meaning of the log levels?
e.g. "Generally log level # should ne enough information. log level #

How do I get a literal '%' in smb.conf
I have an AIX 5.2 system running samba 2.2.0
I have a directory /FIX010/%prt that I want to share. There is a
symlink, /FIX010/pq to it. The path statement in smb.conf points to
/FIX010/pq, and this used to work, but with the current version of samba
the directory is seen as empty, and logging at level 3 shows an access
denied error.
I have tried 'path = /FIX010/%%prt' and 'path =

How does SMB 3.0 encryption work?
I'm interested in using SMB encryption to connect over untrusted
networks. I see that I can enable it in samba with 'smb encrypt = ...'
which is great, and I'm seeing posts from Microsoft (like this one:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn551363(v=ws.11).aspx)
bragging about how it can detect man-in-the-middle attacks.
Can anyone point me at the basic details of how

hosts allow on smb.conf
Hi,
I have some query about the samba security, we are trying to setup
remote map drive for vpn client, since this kind of client connection
which using different IP address, the only way we can do is to set
'hosts allow' to nothing. We just want to know if this change is risky
or not, our samba was setup as a DC, and client computers already join
to Linux Domain. The VPN protocol

How does SMB 3.0 encryption work?
It does, thanks.
So if the password is known, or the KDC compromised, then in principle
MITM becomes possible?

2.2.0 panics with quotas and no rpc.rquotad on NFS server
Samba 2.2.0 on SPARC Solaris 8
Configured with:
./configure --with-pam --with-syslog --with-quotas --with-msdfs --with-acl-support
I am accessing the share \\server\mgerdts, which is itself an automounted
(NFS) directory. That is, /home/mgerdts on server really exists on
nfsserver. On nfsserver, rquotad is commented out of inetd.conf.
Using smbclient (2.0.7, yeah I know) I do:

Samba4 smb.conf parse shares diffently depending on where a section is located.
I guess this works as intended but i wanted to put it here anyhow for
future reference for others.
If a share definition is located above [Global] it gets totally different
attributes. We had enormous problems with rights on one share and no matter
what we did to acl, xattr and Windows permissions it just would not work
correctly. A couple of things added to a definition above [Global] is:

uid/gid in smb.conf
Hi! All:
I have a question about writing smb.conf: Can I use uid/gid in smb.conf
instead of username/group name?? If I was in a domain, can I
write "+10000/20001" in smb.conf? (Note: 10000 is gid and 20001 is uid in
domain)
Does anyone ever try it??
Thanks for you reply.
