NT & Win98 slow copies
Howdy all: For those who are curious (eg, Peter de Groot <pdgtech@wantree.com.au>) here are the (I think) relevant posts from recent samba digests concerning win98 and or NT performance problems copying files between local drives and samba shares. It looks like there should be some new options to play with in the next samba release. Could Jeremy or Andrew confirm? (BTW, nice

Where are the older versions?
Hi, Anyone know where I can get a .tar.gz of 2.0.2? I'd like this version, since the PDC code is reportedly more stable than 2.0.3. Or has this been fixed in 2.0.3? Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine publishes Samba art icle.
I got mcp mag a day or two ago, Great writeup!! I was a little surprised that they ran such a glowing review of samba, with some of the negative implications on NT. It is very nice to see Microsoft show an interest in interoperability. -Steve Roylance > -----Original Message----- > From: Jeremy Allison [SMTP:jallison@cthulhu.engr.sgi.com] > Sent: Thursday, April 15, 1999 6:41 PM >

Samba performance
Hi all. I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a quick answer, and didn't find anything on the net. Has anyone done any benchmark comparisons of server speed from Win95 clients, accessing files on a Samba 1.9.17p1 server share, as compared to an NT Server, running on the same server hardware? If so, how did Samba 1.9.17 measure up to the NT server? I need an answer to this,

Prefered Method for UPS?
Hello, since I had delayed the programming of the UPS Device part, now it is time to continue... My Device is "24 V DC modular ATX PSU" which replace the standard ATX Power Supply in PCs and use 15-43 V Input Voltage. The microcontroller is a TI LM3S5T36 Cortex M3 and I get the "UPS" infos using up to 4 Maxim DS1780 and some I?C current sensors. The ATX PSU has 4

winbind and bad permissions mapping from NT to Samba
I'm installed Samba 2.2.8 with the intetion of use it as file share for a NT Domain. I have also an interest to the use of extended ACL so I recompiled the kernel (2.4.20) with the acl patch and I added to my system acl, attr, e2fsprogs and fileutils packages. After all I join the samba server into the NT domain: smbpasswd -j SAMBATEST -r SAMBA-SRV -U Administrator where SAMBATEST is the

Bad passwords from Vampire / NT migration
I just did a clean install of Fedora 9 onto a Pentium 4 machine. It is actually running SELinux enforcing, but I haven't found any errors related to that so far. It is running Samba 3.2.3-0.20. I am trying to migrate a Windows NT 4.0 domain with about 30 users and 30 computers onto a pure Samba setup, using Samba as the PDC and tdbsam. I have read the HOWTO guide extensively, and

problems with samba 1.9.18p8
I recently installed samba 1.9.18p8. Since then, we get the following error: "No domain server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources." after the server has been running for >48 hours. If I stop and restart the server, everything is ok again. Slowdown when copying large files (PR#8617)
> Further to my previous post, I have made an interesting discovery. This > particular slowdown only occurs from clients that are running > Windows 98. The Windows98 explorer (and possibly other programs) incorrectly set the "sync" bit in write requests to network shares. This causes an enormous slowdown as Samba (quite correctly) does a fsync() on the file after each write.

Samba and ClearCase
We're trying to use samba to let our PC's mount view extended pathnames used by clearcase but they show up as empty. If anyone's used samba and Clear Case (by Pure Atria) and gotten it to work I'd love to hear how. thanks, Bill -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- William H. Samba vs. NetAppliance
Hi, I'm debating purchasing a NetAppliance fileserver that does native CIFS. Below is a URL to a NetAppliance authored paper regarding performance. One of the sections compares NFS to CIFS and talks about Samba. Can anyone dispute any of this? Is there any reason besides price that I should stick with Samba? -Ed Ed Sanborn (978) 691-6496 Northchurch

Automatically locating domain controller
I apologise for not knowing the answer to this, especially as I saw it was discussed on the mailing lists but can't find the original article (even searching the archives). Our support teams would like a single smb.conf that can be used as a default world-wide. (allowing for a minimal modification of the "workgroup=" field) This means that you're stuck for what to put in your

Accessing Samba home directories across 2 different NT/AD domains
We've begun a network migration project to migrate from an old and pretty broken NT 4.0 domain (Lots of settings are just wrong and we wanted to rename the domain at the same time) to a Windows 2003 based AD domain. One of the issues we need to resolve is that all our users' My Documents are mapped to their home share on a Samba server I've been pondering how I can easily get both

Samba allows clients to mount sub-directories of shares - NT does n't ???
Dear All, I was just proved wrong by a collegue when he was saying that he had been able to do the following: net use t: \\sambaserver\share\dir1\dir2 successfully. My understanding is that NT will not let clients mount at anything other than the share level. That is, it will not let you mount subdirs (as NFS does), so the above will not work. So, I said that because Samba provides the same
