Seagate FreeAgent Pro (external storage, eSATA) linux compatibility
Hi list I am running out of space on my notebook. So wanna buy additional and external storage. I don't wanna do a DIY-work, so searching for pre-built external hard disks. I wish to buy Seagate FreeAgent Pro [0]. Does it work under CentOS 5? Would you recommend me even better products? I am searching for good performance, noise-less, smart standard support and no useless features like

One way Samba
I am running Samba 2:3.3.2 on a Kubuntu 9.04 Linux box. With the configuration file below the linux box can see and retrieve shared files on all 5 of my windows boxes. However, none of the windows boxes can see the linux shares as they are defined in the smb.conf below. The linux box shows up in the windows network neighborhood as Mercury1 but when I try to open it to show the shares I get the

Force SATA1 on AOC-SAT2-MV8
I have a supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and am having some issues getting drives to work. From what I can tell, my cables are to long to use with SATA2. I got some drives to work by jumpering them down to sata1, but other drives I can''t jumper without opening the case and voiding the drive warranty. Does anyone know if there is a system setting to drop it back to SATA1? I use zfs on a raid2 if

callers in queue passed to agents who accept only one call at a time
I have a queue I configured as "strict" and a cron script I use to QueueAdd and QueueRemove agents according to my company's requirements. Usually I have 2 or 3 agents at a time and the ring strategy is ringall. These agents use non-open-source Windows softphones that do not let you configure it so that if they're on the phone, a second call will be rejected (agent busy).

sleepy disk drives
Hi, I'm having a grief with Seagate FreeAgent Pro drive connected to CentOS 4 box via USB. The problem is that drive is factory configured to take a nap (spin down) after some 15-20 minutes of inactivity, and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable it. Since it's USB connected, hdparm can't be used on it. Getting the drive out of the case is not an option either, since it

vendoring rails the good ol' fashioned way
rails 3.0.7 here. ''bundle package'' dumps 29MB into vendor/cache and 129MB into vendor/ rails.... That seems to arbitrary and unnecessary. How do I install rails to vendor/rails these days? ''rake rails:freeze:gems'' used to work great, now what? Tried this: Gemfile: gem ''rails'', ''3.0.7'', :path =>

Question about bicreg
Dear Adrian and Ian (and r-helpers), I encountered a curious result in developing an example using the bicreg function in the BMA package: I noticed that pairs of models with equal R^2 and equal numbers of predictors had nevertheless different BIC values. Looking at the bicreg function, the definition of BIC appears to be the usual one, or close to it [bic <- n * log(1 - r2/100) + (size - 1) *

External HD partitioning & formatting considerations
I strongly dislike moving removable disks between computers, especially with differing operating systems. I would instead recommend getting/building a NAS aka file server and using the network to share files, or make backups, or whatever. Window can't see Linux share
I have tried every possible configuration suggestion I have found on the net, but still can't get my windows PC's to see *nix shares (running Kubuntu 9.04 and Samba 3.3.2 with a Gadmin-Samba GUI 0.2.7) and Win2000 and WinXP. The *nix box can see and use the shares from the various W-boxes, but not visaa-versa. Here is my smb.conf: [global] netbios name = Mercury1 server string = Samba

External HD partitioning & formatting considerations
Hi, One of my clients has a mixed Linux/Mac OS/Windows environment in his office. He just purchased a 4 TB external hard disk, which he intends to use on his various workstations. Up until recently, I've been using plain old MBR/FAT for hard disks in mixed environments. Fire up fdisk, make one big 0b type partition, and then format it using mkdosfs. Unfortunately, there's a 2 TB limit

Samba and Seagate BackupExec
Hi, I've got Samba 2.0.2 on a Linux Red Hat 5.2 and a server NT4 SP3 with Seagate BackupExec 7.0. When I want to backup Samba with Seagate BackupExec, I get a message saying "Unable to connect to server, <F5> to retry", and then another one saying "A device specific error occured". I've read all the Samba archive about that subject, but I do not find any

Backing up Samba shares with Seagate Backup Exec for NT
Hello, Does anyone have experience backing up their samba SMB shares with an NT-based backup system? I'm using Seagate Backup Exec 7.0, and whenever I select a share on Samba, I get a message saying "Unable to connect to server, <F5> to retry", and then another one saying "A device specefic error occured". My samba shares are all fully operational (I can access them

Memdisk & seagate diagnostic tool
Hi all! I'm using syslinux & memdisk (3.11 version) to boot a floppy disk image of the seagate disk diagnostic tools via an usb key. When booting directly from the floppy disk, every thing is all right and my seagate disk is detected. But when booting the disk image via memdisk & syslinux on my USB key, every thing seems all right *except* that no disk is detected by the tools

Seagate - experience/opinion on vendor?
If ti makes you feel any better, I am not having stellar service from WD's support. In fact, they act like they never received the HD I sent for RMA whose tracking number says they did 10 days ago.
