how to push the bounds and get newer packages for centos 5.4?
i've just started looking after a (virtual) centos 5.4 server that's
hosted at rackspace and, unsurprisingly, it was set up with all the
standard defaults. part of the work i'll be doing involves php and,
as i read it, the standard php version with centos 5.4 is php-5.1.
if i *wanted* to move up to a more recent version (say, php-5.3),
obviously, i'd need to go outside the

possible additional comment regarding newer PHP
again, from here:

regarding a newer version of PHP, a number of PHP experts that i know

should:

while remi collet's repo isn't official, it's accepted by numerous
developers as a reliable source of newer PHP

CentOS 5 Testing repo
We were using the CentOS 5 testing repo on dev.centos.org to update our
webservers' PHP to 5.2. However, we've just tried building a new
machine lately and found that the repo seems to be empty. Is this a
temporary fault, or has it gone away now that CentOS 6 is out?
If it has gone away, where can I grab PHP 5.2 packages from?
Thanks.

Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead
I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose.
so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box
has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates
come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE.
grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it
actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've

issues with 3rd party repos for centos
i'm reading the lowdown on 3rd party repos with respect to centos
here:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
and i have a couple questions and observations. first, the entry for
centosplus reads:
"Popular packages from this repository include: postfix with database
support, a rebuilt kernel with additional drivers & filesystem
support, php5 and mysql5."

Power failure diagnosis?
This morning between 07:10 or so and 08:10 I discovered that my PC had
shut itself off. I thought it was due to a power failure becuase I
never turn it off without a good reason, and it had been running (and
playing sounds) until it wasn't. My roommate/landlord tells me that
the only anomaly he observed was that our router had lost its internet
connection (via a cable modem, which was still

yum install fails - itertoolsmodule.so
I've just tried a yum update on one of my C7 boxes and got the following output.
I'm guessing to fix this I need to re-install the RPM, but I can't remove it because of dependancies, so how can I fix the problem?
I've managed to download a later version of the RPM, but haven't managed to find the same version as the one installed.

yum install fails - itertoolsmodule.so
Hi Paddy,
I was suspecting the same, and from the output below I think you're right. However, I was hoping I could just repair this problem for now, and worry about replacing the HDD later. I need to resume some services that also seem to generate this same error.
