Migrating from VMWare Workstation
Dear virt list I have some virtual machines running on my notebook under VMWare 6.5.2 64 bit that I would like to move to a current 64 bit CentOS 5.3 machine with a current Intel Xeon processor. The virtual machines do use the GUI, e.g. they are not text only. Is it better to use VMware server or Xen? If using Xen, do I have to convert the images? Regards, Peter -- Dott. Peter

Status of PostgreSQL and PHP in Testing
Dear CentOS developers I would like to have ask some questions about the PostgreSQL and PHP packages in the current Testing repository for CentOS 5. In http://wiki.centos.org/QaWiki/TestingRepo there is a note, that the testing period is about 3 weeks. Currently, the PostgreSQL and PHP packages in http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/testing/SRPMS were created in September 08. Do the developers

Problems compiling PostgreSQL package from FC8 on CentOS 5
Dear CentOS list we are a small software company making mostly web driven GIS software. We started to simplify out sysadmin life making RPM packages of most of the GIS software stack. For a dependency issue we had to abandon the upstream 8.1 PostgreSQL and install at least a 8.2 version. Taking the package from Fedora 8 and rebuilding it for x86_64 went smoothly. Unfortunatly the same is

Connection stall when connecting to XEN guests
Hello I have a physical server (Dell Poweredge 1950III) running current CentOS 5.4 x86_64 and the XEN hypervisor, provided by CentOS. This machine has 2 virtual machines installed, both with CentOS 5.4 x86_64. Unfortunatly SSH connections coming both, from an external machine or from DOM0, regularly stall, for a period of some minutes. In other words, while working through SSH, at a given

Random server reboot after update to CentOS 5.3
Dear ML We upgraded a Dell Poweredge PE 1950 Server the 8th of May. Since then the server rebooted 3 times without external cause (it is located in a server farm with redundant power supply etc.). Looking at the servers monitoring infrastructure with Dell's own OpenManage tools, I get strange errors: [root at servernew ~]# omreport system esmlog (....) Severity : Critical Date

PHP 5.2.x rpm for Centos 5? (any news)
I've searched the archives and found a post last march about a rpm version of php for centos. Any news about it? Is it still in testing? Any known issues? Where do I get it? Thanks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: <http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/attachments/20081223/a3730264/attachment-0003.html>

CentOS, PHP, Basic GIS
I have no experience with GIS whatsoever. I really know squat about it. I'm currently working on a project to plot locality data for wildlife on a map of Shasta County. This is for a new herpetological club that hopes to track strength of our local herp populations, since it seems evident that in the last 20 years we lost one species of frog and are close to losing another (probably less

which programming language for server-side admin tasks
Hi, I would like to spend some time learning a new coding language, but specifically for server side admin stuff, i.e. setting up users / databases / FTP accounts / virtual domains on Apache, etc. I already know PHP, but realize it's not quite suited for this kind of admin, and I suppose I need to look @ PERL / Python / C++ / Ruby? / others? Can someone give me some pointers on this? I

Who's eating our bandwidth?
Hi, I've recently setup a new server for our public libraries. For the last two years, this has been my first "big" job, since it involves networking eleven small to medium size public libraries. There was a hiccup some time ago when the administration hiring me wanted to do it on their own, but it took them less than two weeks to get the server hacked and lose everything. So

Re: Windows XP machine not connecting to Samba 3.04 after upgrade
Hi, as I wrote before: I'm not able to connect a Windows XP Pro notebook to a Samba 3.0.4 server. All the other machines (most Windows XP Pro, but also a few Windows 2000 and Windows 98) can connect without any problem. This one machine is not part of the NT domain because it needs to connect 1 or 2 times a week only, and is on the road most of the time. The machine could connect

cannot access umlaut file names with Samba3
Hi, I' m not very happy with Samba3 as I have very heavy problems with filenames containing umlaut characters. I have installed a new Debian 3 server for a client with Samba 3.0.1 (Debian packages), and copied over the data from a SuSE 6.4 (Samba 2.2.8a) system by mounting the hard disk into the new system. Now, I cannot access the files and directories with umlaut characters anymore. I

Windows XP machine not connecting to Samba 3.04
Hi, after the installation of Samba 3.04 (upgrade from 3.02) a single XP notebook cannot connect to any share. Installation on a Macbook Pro with nVidia MCP89 SATA controller
Did anybody succeed in installing CentOS on a MacBook Pro with nVidia chipset (2010 edition, http://www.heise.de/mac-and-i/produkte/macbook-13-2-4-ghz-mitte-2010-86/#produkt_detail)? When I boot with the current minimal install disk, Linux does simply see non disks. Regards, Peter -- Peter Hopfgartner R3 GIS http://www.r3-gis.com

Guests pausing suddenly
We have a CentOS 6.2 server with KVM. That server hosts 2 virtual machines, both with Centos 6.2, too. Regularly, one or both of the virtual machines pass to state "pause" without apparent reason. On resume, I do get have messages, like the following in /var/log/messages. Feb 28 21:50:45 achernar fcoemon: Failed to connect to lldpad Feb 29 08:23:56 achernar kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda]

Samba 3.2.4, Win 2008 AD require domain name for auth.
I'm hoping someone has seen this before and knows how to resolve it. I am using samba 3.2.4 with a Windows 2008 AD. Samba is configured with security = ADS and works correctly from computers logged into the domain, but does not allow users that are not in the domain to login by specifying their username, without domain included, when trying to access a share. The user can access the share

ipsec-tools to Windows ISA 2004
Good day, Has anyone managed to successfully create a site to site IPSec tunnel between BSD with ipsec-tools and Windows ISA 2004? We're trying to get this up and running locally on a test network and not having much success. The tunnel between the two sites comes up, and traffic from BSD private to ISA private seems to be flowing, but return traffic appears to be flowing from the ISA

clients that are not a part of the domain cannot authenticate
Hi, I have asked that last week with a little different subject, but the problem remains. When connecting with a Windows machine (not part of the domain) to the Samba server, the client is not authenticating, even when the user exists in the domain. Domain master is a Windows 2003 SBS machine, the Samba server is a Debian Lenny machine. The problem is occurring with Samba 3.2.13, with Samba
