Random number generation problem (PR#554)
Full_Name: Kjetil Kjernsmo
Version: 1.0.1
OS: osf1
Submission from: (NULL) (129.240.28.227)
Hello!
I'm getting strange numbers from a random number generation
function again. I was wondering if it could be the same problem
as I reported in (PR#439).
I'm using the functions (some comments deleted for brevity):
qamp <- function(p, type=c("point", "nolens"))

Problem with match.arg() (PR#536)
Full_Name: Kjetil Kjernsmo
Version: Version 1.0.0
OS: osf1
Submission from: (NULL) (129.240.28.227)
Hello again!
This is a follow-up to my message on R-help about a problem with match.arg()
I have a little more on the topic, but not much really.
First, it was not entirely true what I wrote in r-help that I call match.arg()
in my ramp(), because ramp() just calls qamp() with runif() as

Migrating to dovecot from gmail apps
Hi,
I'm considering migrating away from gmail for my (one-man) company, and I'm
trying to decide if dovecot is the right option (I'm committed to
self-hosting). I'm a developer, so happy to do my own tooling if needed.
*Is there currently a good webmail interface to dovecot, or work-in
progress?* If not, would a web interface be out-of-scope for dovecot? I
want to use SAML for

SSH over websockets
Hi all,
I can't find a working archive search for this list, so please forgive me
if this has been discussed before.
Has any thought been given to supporting websockets in the ssh client? I'm
talking about solely using a websocket as the transport layer, and leaving
the actual protocol intact, as opposed to the (to me, frankly terrifying)
idea of allowing a web server to act as an ssh

downloading the R program
I am trying to download the R program, but am having trouble. I have
read through the instructions, but do not seem to be able to do it
properly. Can you tell me the step-by-step instructions?

elegant way to check if 2 values are in 3 columns?
Dear all,
I'm trying to rerun some data linkage exercises in R (they are designed
to be done in SPSS, SAS or STATA)
The exercise in question is to relabel the column "treat" to "1", if
"yearsep" is smaller than 1988 and columns "proc1"-"proc3" contain the
values 56.36 or 59.81.
My pathetic solution to do this in R currently looks like

R rpm for Mandriva 2008.1 ?
Are there any R rpm's for Mandriva 2008.1? I found a couple of dodgy
ones that wouldn't install so far (rpmfind.net).
(Sorry that seems so far the only Linux distribution that recognizes my
hardware on my new laptop correctly. I'm more familiar to Fedora and
Suse so perhaps I'm just doing something wrong?)

How to test impact of candidate changes to package?
I use a package to contain simple functions that can be handled by unit tests for correctness and more complex functions that combine the simple functions with business logic. Where there are proposals to change either the simple functions or the business logic, a sample needs to be run before the change and then after it to understand the impact of the change.
I do this currently by

That's a ssh client implemented in chromium, not a web server acting as
sshd. However...
?Secure Shell also knows how to connect to an HTTP-to-ssh relay that was
built inside Google. Unfortunately
that relay isn't open source,

ipconfig - single option for specifying hostname
Hi all,
I've recently been experimenting with Xen VMs booted using DHCP/NFS, and
that's looking good.
One nuisance is that I'm unable to get the DNS to update on the server
since there's no hostname in the DHCP request packet.
I'm aware that I can specify a hostname using the long-format device name,
but this doesn't seem to play well with initramfs. So, I'd like to

Fixed variance structure for lme
I have a data set with 50 different x values and 5 values for the sampling
variance; each of the 5 sampling variances corresponds to 10 particular x
values. I am trying to fit a mixed effect linear model and I'm not sure
about the syntax for specifying the fixed variance structure. In Pinheiro's
book my situation appears to be similar to the example used for varIdent,

random sampling or random replacement
Dear R users,
I'm trying to randomly recreate a real dataset with missing data and I'm
not quite sure if I can use the sample command for this. I think it
might be better to do it in 2 steps and randomly replace the sampled
data with missing data...
So something like this
x <- sample(10000:20000, 100) #without replacement
Now I want x to contain to 20% missing data (NA). Could

SSH over websockets
I must be missing the point here somehow. From my simple mind I think that
two things would be needed - first a mod, e.g., mod_sshd, or better an
addition to mod_auth and mod_proxy so that a URL could be used to initiate
contact to an sshd server elsewhere.
The mod_auth part could/should be used to verity the credentials to used -
basically setting up the VPN between ssh and httpd as ssh; the

sink file type and Latex (Lyx)
Does anyone know what file type sink is outputting to? I've been
reverting output from R using sink and wanted to add it to my Appendix
in LaTex (Lyx) using "Verbatiminput". However, I get an error message as
LaTex is expecting an ASCII file.
Can I set sink somehow to ASCII or is there another option?
Thanks Joanne

constrOptim
Hi,
I'm having trouble using the constrOptim function to generate the
9-component vector argmin of the function ELfsds:
ELfsds <- function(pvechat){
LG=0
for(i in 1:9){
LG=LG+log(pvechat[i])
}
return(-LG)
}
with accompanying gradient function:
gradfunc <- function(thetavec){
g=1/(9*thetavec)
return(g)
}
The constraints on the optimization problem are:
1 - components of
