How much memory is need to host a rails app?
I''m looking to host a low-traffic, personal blog. I already have a VPS Linux host with 192MB of RAM. How much memory is need to run a rails app? Considering that memory is scarce, I assuming LigHTTPD will be a better choice than apache. What about MySql? Do I need more memory to host that or should I consider sqlite instead? Is anyone else hosting a Rails a rails app on a host with

Why does poudriere always rebuild nginx and GraphicsMagick13?
Hi, poudriere 2.2 here, running on 9.1-amd64 Of the 730-ish ports, whenever I run a build, it always rebuilds the above two ports. Even if nothing changed. Is there are specific reason for this? I don't really mind nginx, because it builds so quickly - but GraphicsMagick takes a bit too long.

[OT] Gentoo install help please
I''ve decided to take the plunge and go with Gentoo for my rails development and test box. I figure the easy of maintenance is worth the setup hassles. Anyway, I''m followin the instructions on the Gentoo web site. I''ve selected the ..''i686'' 2.6 kernel for my 700mhz amd processor, and choosen stage3 install option from CD. I''m now at the the

Capistrano on Windows
So, I''ve just completed my first develop-test-deploy-wait -fix-test-deploy, and although it was successful it was a nightmare to carry out. Aside from not knowing that sqlite doesnt have a facility to delete columns from tables, the whole operation reeked of "hacked," with multiple command windows open while I sprinted back and forth between my dev machine and the web

[Atcom] Asterisk + LAMP on 128MB RAM?
Hello I'm thinking of selling an Asterisk server based on Atcom's IP02 solid-state unit with one FXO and one FXS ports: http://atcom.cn/En_products_IP02.htm By default, this unit based on a 400MHz Blackfin 532 chip only has 64MB RAM and 256MB of NAND flash. Those can be increased to 128MB and 1GB, respectively. Do you think I can install Linux + Asterisk + LAMP (replacing MySQL with

rails on low memory vps
Anyone got any tips for running Rails (w/ either webrick or lighttpd/fcgi) on a VPS with a pretty small amount of memory (like 64MB memory and 64MB swap). Thanks, Joe

256MB of RAM enough for ruby on rails and mysql?
Hi, I was wondering if 256MB of RAM is enough to run a ruby on rails server and mysql server. My application does not do any complex queries, but it does deal with quite a lot of data (potentially tables as large as 100MB). The number of concurrent users should be low, never more than 10. Currently I''m serving RoR using Lighttpd via fastcgi. The only thing I''ve changed from the

RoR meets .net *cringe*
It was a miserable failure for us. Your best bet is to run on Linux. > 1. Has anyone done any benchmarks with it? Is there any reason this > couldn''t be viable for production loads? (feel free to speculate if you > haven''t) When it finally worked, after two weeks of trial and error (and we can''t reproduce it again) it performs poorly under IIS. It looks

Weird problem with script/server, lighttpd, and FreeBSD
I installed lighttpd from ports on my FreeBSD-5 system last night, wanting to play with that instead of WEBrick for development work. I installed it, and ran script/server, and got this: [minter@carlton discostu]$ script/server => Booting lighttpd (use ''script/server webrick'' to force WEBrick) => Rails application started on http://0.0.0.0:3000 => Call with -d to

What database should I use, for simple data storing? SQLite or the buitin one?
Hi. I was studying about how to use databases in Asterisk, accessing it from the dial plan. In my project, my dial plan will have to store simple data (ex: IP number, port number, device name, etc) in a persistent way, so that it will be possible to retrieve such information in future moments, still via dial plan. For this case, I would like to know? 1. What is the best choice for storing and

RoR on a VPS
I''m looking for a virtual private server to run a RoR site accessing a database on a different machine. This is a small application - basically a form to add records, and a few summary screens. What are the minimal requirements for a vps? Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Easiest way to deploy a ruby on rails site
Hi, i am looking to deploy a ruby on rails site. I currently have some asp.net 2.0 sites hosted using IIS. I have looked at some of the issues with hosting a rails site on IIS and this looks more hassle than what it is worth. I tried it and i couldn''t get it to work. Can someone tell me what is the easiest way to get a rubyonrails site up and running on a server running windows.

Camping and DBI
Hi, I''ve been playing around with using DBI instead of ActiveRecord ''cause I just love to beat myself up! ;) Is this an okay way to do this, or is there any other more creative ways? require ''dbi'' module MyApp:Models class DB def self.dbh DBI.connect(''DBI:Mysql:dbname'', ''username'',

Web-based Ruby Syntax Highlighter
Hi all, Last night, I wrote a web-based syntax highlighter that takes Ruby and produces nice HTML of the code, ready for including on web pages, or in blog posts, or whatever. I don''t know how useful it will be for other people, but feel free to use it. Anyway, the URL is : http://syntax.carldr.com/ Any comments/suggestions would be gratefully received. Enjoy!

The perfect development environment?
I am trying to create the perfect development environment for rails and i dont know exactly which way to go. Do i create a windows environment or a *nix environment. If i go *nix, what distro is best suited for rails. I would be using mysql, so that would come in to play. If i go *nix, i would use apache. Any ideas for the right environment would be greatly appreciated. I guess the major choice is

Fwd: What database should I use, for simple data storing? SQLite or the buitin one?
To some extent the answer depends on how you want to use it overall, and what you already have installed. We did something similar on a project where we created a simple app accessible via AGI, and it stored/retrieved data to/from anXML file. If your access frequency is low enough that might be a good solution. On the other hand if you need complex query capability you should stay on the

Newbie Question about Custom Classes
Sorry if this is a complete newbish question, but I''m trying to wrap my head around creating custom classes in my rails webapp. I''m normally a Java developer, but I figured I''d give RoR a try and see how I like it, and whether it would be useful for production use with a new client. Anyways, what are the best practices for custom classes? Where and/or how do I create

Instiki 0.11.0 - ActiveRecord Forever
Dear all, If you thought Instiki was a dead project, you were right. Since I''ve got a day job that doesn''t suck (Official Ruby Zealot of ThoughtWorks Canada), my motivation to do open source greatly sufferred :) But... but... but! Here is Instiki 0.11.0, and in this version Instiki is (finally!) moving to ActiveRecord backend and (finally!) has the File Upload feature.

Lighttpd Restart Script
After quite a bit of searching and coding, I customized an init.d/bash script which allows me to manage multiple instances of Lighttpd server running Rails. It targets the specific PID address instead of the default binary location when starting and stopping /usr/local/bin/lighttpd process. This provides the ability in my case to have multiple lighttpd.conf files running many different instances
