Given all the issues with the fax DSP code and reliability, I'm looking into the option of using an external fax modem instead of trying to shoehorn asterisk into handling faxes properly... I finally picked up a "real" modem (not a winmodem) and put it in my machine. I pulled down the hsfmodem driver from the source, got a license and installed the driver at full power. Has anyone sucessfully implimented a fax or modem detection dial plan? I'm originating calls from asterisk using a list of numbers and dropping the destination into an IVR menu but need to do something different if a modem or fax answers. I tried to use the NVBackgroundDetect() application but i think that is for receiving faxes only. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I use Speex with dialup modem users. Even if the dialup modem is "56K", you should assume that upstream bandwidth available is only 20-30kbps at the most. I use 16kHz wideband mode and VBR quality 2.
