Opteron in 32-bit mode
I'm spec-ing a development server for some Haskell hackers. In particular, they need to be able to build and run the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (ghc), the x86_64 port of which isn't quite there yet. My current thought is to get an Opteron-based system, but load it (initially, at least) with the 32-bit i386 version of CentOS. That buys me near-term ghc compatibility. In the future,

Opteron, Athlon/64, and disaster recovery
Has anybody here taken a HDD configured with an Opteron system, and then put it into an Athlon/64 and had it work? Are they interchangeable, like an Athlon/32 and a P3/P4? -Ben -- "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." - XEROX PARC slogan, circa 1978

athlon64/opteron 8GB per CPU
I'm putting together a spec for a big(ger) memory x86_64 host, and I hope some of you-all can help. I'm looking for success stories of hardware that folks are using in production environments, preferably with CentOS 4, with more than 4GB of memory per CPU. I know there are lots of mobos out there that can do this, but I'm looking for what folks really have running. Call me

CentOS 4.1 x86_64 compiler segfaults
Hi list! I am running CentOS 4.1 x86_64 on an Athlon64. The box was installed only yesterday. Yesterday I was still able to compil stuff, yesterday even the tiniest and simplest programs fail to compile always with internal compiler error: Segmentation fault. For example: make -C /usr/src/linux-2.6 SUBDIRS=/tmp/bristuff-0.2.0-RC8n/qozap ZAP=-I/tmp/bristuff-0.2.0-RC8n/zaptel-1.0.9 modules

optimal hardware for computations in R?
Hi, I am planning to buy a new PC for computing simulations in R under Linux. I was searching the web/mailing list-archives for useful hints about the "optimal" choice of hardware - surprisingly I found no recent topics. As far as I know, R doesn't use threads, so I think that there should be no benefit in choosing a dual-processor machine. So the remaining affordable choices

New Processor support..
Hey.. Has anyone played around with Asterisk on the Itanium2, Opteron or Athlon64?? Can Asterisk (or Linux for that matter) actually make good use of a 64bit system?? Later..

Hello list. My server: Gentoo 2.6.21-xen dom0 xen-tools 3.2.1 lvm 2.02.28-r2 udev-115-r1 Symptoms: normally I run 4 domUs. About once a week I have a need to restart a domU. Problems with Lapack's eigen() on 64-bit
I'm only now realizing that we have severe problems with R on our AMD 'Opteron' and 'Athlon64' clients running Redhat Enterprise with all 64-bit libraries (AFAICS). The Lapack problem happens for R-patched and R-devel both on the Opteron and the Athlon64. Here are platform details: o "gcc -v" and "g77 -v" both end with the line gcc version 3.2.3

Firewire question (Centos 4.4)
Assuming I have a firewire card with a supported chipset, is there anything special I need to do in order for the kernel to recognize the card? Shouldn't kudzu "wake up" and configure the card when I boot up after installing it? This is a brand spanking new 4.4 system and a supported Agere chipset firewire card. I'm having trouble tickling devices connected to the card.

Network frozen in Centos 5 with Xen
Hello, I have this problem - I have installation of Xen and Centos 5 (all RPMs are from Centos repositories). I have several DomU virtual machines running on this machine. When I try to copy some bigger amount of data from another physical computer to Dom0/DomU on this machine, the network freezes. The link is still up, I can see that the connection really links on the switch, but nothing is

Xorcom Astribank udev issue in Ubuntu 9.10
Hi, I have upgraded an Asterisk installation with a Xorcom BRI Astribank that was working under Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 9.10 and the device is no longer initialized. When I reload the udev rules, I see that the rules seems to be correctly loaded: udevd[452]: reading '/etc/udev/rules.d/40-xpp.rules' as rules file However, these rules do not seem to be triggered: # udevadm trigger

Hello. We have a number of Xen 3.4.2. boxes which have constant iowaits at around 10% with spikes up to 100% when accessing data over NFS. We have been unable to nail down the issue. Any advice? OT: SysAdmin Stories
Hello, I'm compiling a collection of stories from the systems administrator trenches. They can be short or long, funny or about a particularly challenging problem or period, or even something that appeared very technically challenging and ended up being something very simple. Stories which are more political would be ok so long as they do not have an agenda or can be interpreted as a

automated remote cloning
Good morning/day and Happy New Year. We have a geographically distributed environment (marketing speak: cloud) where we regularly need to migrate individual systems to new hardware (for bigger disks or for better geographical placement, for example). We currently use Cobbler to do our base installs automatically and I am now looking at integrating Clonezilla with Cobbler. The goal is take an
