why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?
I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all together? One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the disks in a RAID1 bootable. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the

Installation from 2 cds
Hi all! I've tried to install Lingvo 12.0 via wine. Everything went well till the point, where the second cd were requested. I've inserted the second cd and made a click at the second-cd request dialog, but nothing happened (but an additional error message in the wine-output): err:msi:msi_view_get_row Error fetching data for 1 And then each time I pushed the "Retry" button

Need help debugging R.
I originally posted this to R-help, but here is probably a better place. I have a rather complex routine which works great in R. Then I bootstrap it. After running a few minutes it typically segfaults, though it happens very randomly. This happens w/ 1.9.0 and 1.9.1 on Fedora1 and a Scyld (RH7.3) system. Traces always point back to routines in src/main/memory.c, though often not the same

compiz on aiglx redux
Hi, I've revisited compiz on aiglx and at this point, if you're running rawhide (fedora development), it's a matter of installing the i386 RPM found here: http://people.redhat.com/krh/compiz/ There's a SRPM there too for other architectures, rebuild using rpmbuild --rebuild compiz-0.0.13.fedora1-3.src.rpm To run compiz, first start the gnome-window-decorator process in

Samba with Mac files?
I have a Win2K Server that acts as a file server to a bunch of Macintosh machines on the network. Today I installed samba-3.0.5 on a Fedora1 machine, and mounted one of the server shares and tried to read it. Much to my surprise, I found files that are being listed like this: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 May 13 16:30 Icon?* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 25649 Aug 23 2000 webslide151.gif*

different MAC address, ignoring
I think a recent update changed the behavior of ifup on systems where the drives were moved or cloned and at boot time have a different MAC address than the one found in the corresponding interface file under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts or /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/. Now the interface is ignored with an error message about having a different MAC address than expected. I

Scheduled Outages
What's "after hours" for an ISP with customers all over the world? That's why we have regular once-per-month scheduled outages. Same time, every month. Email reminders go out to customers and are announced on our web pages. People can't argue with a month's advance notice. -- Roger J. CentOS 4 Software Raid1 questions
I want to mirror an existing 40GB data only drive using software Raid1 on my new CentOS 4 server. The existing drive is connected to a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller (non-raid). I have read about mdadm and understand how to create the Raid1 on /dev/mdxx devices. However I would like to know if the existing data on the orignal 40GB drive in the system will be destroyed when I create the raid with

Between single/dup and raid1/raid1
Hello, today I wanted to remove one drive from raid1, and people at #btrfs advised me to use ''-dconvert=single'' before ''btrfs device delete''. I thought of adding ''-mconvert=dup'' too, but the kernel does not let me do that. It looks like ''dup'' is disallowed for an array of multiple devices. So, to go back to a single-drive
