Assessing network quality
I am trying to trouble shoot one of my ISP's network and compare to my other ISPs offering. Although network 1 is reasonably fast and has low enough latency, voice quality is not good and the reason for this is not readily apparent using standard network tools. What tools can be used to assess the quality of the network in terms of it's suitability for voice? I am using ping, mtr,

smb/cifs share network speed testing
Is there any piece of software that I can use to run between a client and a linux or windows server with a smb/cifs share that will test network speed, latency, sustained read/writes, multiple file create, read, write, close, etc.. etc.. over X period time? I'm testing a Centos server with samba and Windows 2k3/8 servers on the other end of a T1 connection and while I know the T1 bandwidth

rsync on Interix WSU 3.5
I'm need to run a rsync server on a Quad 2.8Ghz , 1Gb RAM, 1Terabyte of disk.. Dell 725N - it's a storage, NAS type box running W2K, RAID 5 etc.. A real beast.. :-) The Unix guys want to backup their boxes to this beast using rsync clients. It would seem that Windows Services for Unix (WSU) is the key.. Current version gives me a fully compliant POSIX environment, not reliant on

Command line tool to test bandwidth between 2 servers
What's the best way to do this? Daily, jpg images are added to an inhouse server. Everynight I want to backup these images to a server offsite, via rsync. What I want is to determine what to set the bwlimit to. I also want to estimate how many MB's of images I can move nightly. Thanks Dan

Tool Recommendations for measuring UDP throughput / loss / jitter
Tool Recommendations for measuring UDP throughput / loss / jitter Hello all, I'm looking for recommendations on getting some measurement software set up so we can work with our ISP to determine where packet loss is occurring. Linux and windows tools are fine, it's just every time I start searching on google I run into many possibilities and am not sure what I should be trying. Maybe

Traffic generation and measurement
Hello, i am searching for a method to generate traffic and measure it, to compare several version of tc configurations. For my thesis i am researching the best way to use tc for medium sized companies. For this purpose i analyzed the company network and created a tc schema. Now i have to test this definition in a kind of simulation outside the network. Also i have to do a comparison of the

Problem getting Samba 3.0.14a to join NT domain as BDC
Hi list, This is driving me to distraction. I have installed the 3.0.14a RPMS on SLES8, and am following chapter 9 of the 'By Example' documentation, to migrate from an NT domain to a Samba domain backed by LDAP. I have followed the instructions up to the point where I enter: net rpc join -S pdc_it -U Administrator%password Unfortunately, this responds with: Creation of workstation

Filenames apparently truncated when acessing Samba share from XP.
Hi List, This one is puzzling me. I suspect it is largely due to a badly-behaved installer, but I would appreciate any help. I'm so puzzled, I'm not even sure how to explain the problem, but here goes... I have a Samba 3.0.1 system on AIX 5.2, which a number of XP users connect to, in order to access an application installed there. The upgrade installer for said application is causing

force user statement ignored, BUG in 2.2.8?
Hi, I have trouble with the "force user" statement in 2.2.8. I'am using a small perl script to print into a PDF file via a printerdriver on a Win-client. It's basically a ps2pdf. This script must run as root, or it'll crash (don't know why, looks like a Ghostscript error, but thats not the point). Therefor I inserted a force user = root in my conf. Then I have a strange

SIP devices with packet loss tolerance
Greetings list, Hoping someone might have experience with poorly-performing net connections and which devices work best over them. One of our clients has a number of employees that work from home, and are given a SIP phone to take with them and hook up to their broadband. For the most part, this works fine, but there are an increasing number where sound quality is poor ("chops" in and

Authenticating another domain
When I attempt to authenticate a user from another domain, I am seeing some strange issues. My winbindd.log shows that I am indeed already trusting the other domain. (I am a member of the na.uis.unisys.com domain.) However, when I try to gain access to a share where the username EU\INBLR-AUTH1 has access, I get prompted for a username and password over and over. Obviously, it can't
