More words for Allison
Here's the latest batch of words to get shipped out to Allison Smith. Please submit reasonably small changes to me by tomorrow 10:00 AM Eastern time, and I'll add them. As usual, donations to what will be a ~$110 USD expense would be appreciated, as I am paying for this round out of my pocket. Please send to paypal address "jtodd@loligo.com". I did not include all

calculation on series with different time-steps
Hello, I have two series, one with stream stage measurements every 5 minutes, and the other with barometric pressure measurements every hour. I want to subtract each barometric pressure measurement from the 12 stage measurements closest in time to it (6 stage measurements on either side of the hour). I want to do something like the following, but I don't know the syntax. "If the

[Help] Error when using nls
Hi, I am a student of Earthquake Engineering, and am new to R. Currently I try to run nonlinear regression analysis by R. My data has three variables: X, Y, and Z. Z is a function of (X, Y). My R script is as below. rm(list=ls()) # read in data Alldata <- read.table("~/Documents/R/Wu_data.dat", header=TRUE) # assign variables Z <- Wu[[1]] # N1,60 X <- Wu[[2]]

[nls] singular gradient
Hi, I am new to R. I don't have strong background of statistics. I am a student of Geotechnical Engineering. I tried to run a nonlinear regression for a three-variable function, that is N = f(CSR, ev) # N is a function of CSR and ev, and N = CSR/(A +B*CSR), wherer (A,B) are function of ev. N, CSR and ev are observed in the experiments. Following is my R script. rm(list=ls())

selecting subsets of data from matrix
Probably a stupid question, but I don't seem to be able to find the answer I'm looking for from any of the R literature. Basically I have a matrix with several thousand rows and 20 columns(weather stations) of wind direction data. I am wanting to extract a matrix which contains data for all columns conditional on column 20 having a value of _either_ less than 45 or greater than 315. (ie I

Plotting all lines of a data frame
Hello, I'm trying to use R to plot a series of events (contained in a data.frame) into a single plot. In this case, the data columns represent known time marks. I would like to visually see the timing between those marks, for all events at once. What would be the fastest way to make that? My data.frame is like this event.1 event.2 event.3 ... event.N 1 0 52 87

using stepAIC with negative binomial regression - error message help
Dear List, I am having problems running stepAIC with a negative binomial regression model.  I am working with data on manta ray abundance, using 20 predictor variables.  Predictors include variables for location (site), time (year, cos and sin of calendar day, length of day, percent lunar illumination), oceanography (sea surface temp mean and std, sea surface height mean and std), weather (cos

race condition with ControlMaster=auto
There is a race in the setup of the ControlMaster socket in auto mode, as illustrated by the following command line: ssh -oControlMaster=auto -oControlPath=sock localhost 'sleep 1; echo 1' & ssh -oControlMaster=auto -oControlPath=sock localhost 'sleep 2; echo 2' & Both of the commands will try to start up as a control client, find that sock does not exist, and switch into

unz( "x.zip", "y.csv" ) != pipe( "unzip -p x.zip y.csv" )
Not sure this is a bug in R. Maybe its a bug in my understanding of unz(). The character 'b2' (hexadecimal) is in position 535 of line 1 of 'naughty.csv'. This character appears as superscript '2' and came to me in an EXCEL file that I converted to text in a comma separated ( *.csv ) format. The first line gets truncated by readLines after 534 characters using unz():

SIP to H323 with no joy
Greetings and salutations to all... I'm having a bit of a problem getting a SIP phone (Xten) to call an H323 Cisco ATA-186. Both devices can call into the * and get the demo, voicemail, etc... I'm pretty sure my problem is in my configs as it feels like a stupid error and to prove this to myself I set tcpdump on the * box to capture all UDP traffic going to and from the ATA-186. If I

header files for R packages
I have 6 or 7 nice constants (for example 1852 meters per nautical mile) I would like to have available to 4 or 5 functions in an R package. In C this would just be a header .h file and I would just "include" I am stuck trying to figure out how to create something like a C header file for an R package. Any ideas?

privilege separation breaks dns lookups
When the unprivileged child has chrooted it can no longer open /etc/resolv.conf, so if the resolver hasn't yet initialized itself then dns lookups will not be possible. This is unfortunately what normally happens, but sshd falls back gracefully. There are a couple of wrinkles: the resolver will typically try talking to a nameserver on the local host by default (using INADDR_ANY rather than
