Newbie question on soft phones with SIP and *
I am new to the Telephony world and am trying to get a basic idea of how things work. Can I use Asterisk to connect two soft phones on a LAN to communicate with one another without any additional hardware (besides the sound-card)? If this is possible, I seem to be doing something wrong. I have installed a version of X-Lite and can't seem to get it to ring on my Win PC. Any pointers to docs

freebsd vpn server behind nat dsl router
Hello Greg, I am writing you, because I saw your responses to a couple of messages on the freebsd-security mailing list related to freebsd vpn and nat. My situations is rather unique, and I am needing an expert's eyes to glance at it and confirm whether it is doable or not. I have a simple diagram that illustrates what I am trying to do, and it is located here (about 40k):

Audit handbook chapter review, call for general testing
Dear All, Over the past week or so, I have spent some time updating Tom Rhodes' excellent FreeBSD Handbook chapter on Audit for some of the more recent audit changes, such as new features in more recent OpenBSM versions. Since FreeBSD 6.2-BETA2 contains what is likely the final drop of the audit code (modulo any bug fixes) for 6.2-RELEASE, now would be a great time for people interested

Restricting users from certain privileges
Hi: I could not figure out how to restrict users or other users from certain privileges to execute certain commands in FreeBSD/NanoBSD? What I meant is I want to create a NanoBSD image in which there will be an additional user, say 'admin'. I need to give this new user (admin) some privileges to run some root-can-only-execute commands, but not all (ACL similar to the firmwares in adsl

[Kerberos] Error at Handbook?
Hi! I'm quite new to the list, but searching the archive and PRs didn't show me anything on the matter. According to FreeBSD Handbook (14.8.2 Setting up a Heimdal KDC) one should config DNS server by adding: ----- _kerberos IN TXT EXAMPLE.ORG. ----- This doesn't work. DNS servers returns: text = "EXAMPLE.ORG.". This is right, because RFC 1035 allows up to

R modules
Hi All, I'd like to know what is the best way to organize R code in multiple modules= and files. The R code we are writing is too much for a single file. Besides= , there are a lot of reusable functions we'd like to factor out. But writing= a package for that is quite an over-kill and might be too inflexible. So what is the best way to organize R code into multiple files and reusable=

FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE Available
The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE. This is the fourth release from the 7-STABLE branch which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 7.2 and introduces a few new features. There will be one more release from this branch to allow future improvements to be made available in the 7-STABLE branch but at this point most developers are

Flushing the report buffer
Hi Peter, The explanation on why I want to flush the report buffer after running instcmd() or setvar() was incorrect. It is not the variable thats get written, that needs to be read fresh from the UPS. That is already handled by HIDSetItemValue(), which reads back the value and thereby refreshes the report buffer. I goofed up here, I looked at the wrong parameters. :-( However, when I change the

OpenSSH 3.6.1p1 "Proxy-None" patch
Hi OpenSSH'lers! While using OpenSSH for quite a while, I became annoyed with the inflexible config-file parsing algorithm. I special it did not alow me to express: "Use *no* proxy for host xyz, but *this* proxy for all other hosts". So I had a look at the source an make a quick-n-dirty change, allowing me to use the special ProxyCommand "None" to express "don't

How do I make Asterisk login at/use VoIP provider?
Hi please excuse if this seems obvious, but I am new to this and the SIP section in the Asterisk handbook do not give any clues nor do the SIP examples in there seem to represent real-world situations. I am using Nikotel as a VoIP provider (for now) and I would like to configure Asterisk to sign on with Nikotel so that I can use the telephones connected to Asterisk to make calls using the

Some Basic Reading
Hi there, I'm very new here and would like to know if anyone has reccomendations on fundamental reading (other than the handbook) whick might prevent me from asking some really dumb questions (after this one of course). What I'm trying to do: I have a SOHO... very SO in fact. I would like to build a simple system with two analog lines. I do recording and can't always have a cell
