Documentation for "altpath" / "altmove" / ?"Alternate storage"
I was thinking about documentation for alternate storage. We have a few mentions at: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm/Altmove But I was thinking it would be helpful if there could be a page about alternate storage. I could write the page, but I currently have so many unknowns that I think it would be

Alternate Storage altmove not working bug
Hello everyone! I would like to report a bug here. We are using dovecot's sdbox with alternate storage here. From time to time my SSD partition gets full and I always find users with lots of e-mails stuck there, and altmove just won't move them. It moves most of the e-mails correctly, but a few was getting stuck everyday. So, I think I have found the problem! When a user moves the

Questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression
Hi all, I have some questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression. I already scanned the list for related information and I have an idea of how things works, but I would like to have a definite answer. System spec: - CentOS 6.6 x64 - dovecot-2.0.9-8.el6_6.4.x86_64 RPM package/version - sdbox mail store 1) About hardlinks: when sending the same message to two different

mail_location and storage type
Hi, I was setting up a new system for testing Dovecot 1.0. My old one is using 0.99 and was set up quite a time ago, so I had to consult the documentation. I needed several attempts until it worked and that was because the designated maildir directory /server/mail/jrg/Maildir was completely empty. Upon login the server exited and wrote the following to the log: POP3(jrg): Ambiguous mail location

"doveadm altmove -r" not working ?
Hello, I have some trouble using "doveadm altmove -r". Regular "doveadm altmove" is OK, selected mails were moved to alternate storage as expected. But I can't manage to get them back to original location, "doveadm altmove -r" has no effect. We are using Dovecot 2.3.4 (Debian Buster package). mail_location =

"doveadm altmove -r" not working ?
Hi, Your problem might be similar to mine a long time ago. IMO behavior of "doveadm altmove -r" command with mdbox format is different to sdbox format: - With sdbox format, when you move back a message to primary storage (aka default storage), only the message and the file containing it are affected. There is nothing impacted. - With mdbox format, a file in storage contains

dbox alternate storage and samba
Hello everyone, i was just wondering if it's possible to use a samba share as an alternate storage for dbox format. I tried creating a samba share, but when i try to move the email to the alternate storage using doveadm altmove, no errors are printed but no mails are moved. Everything works if the alternate storage is simply another directory on the server hard drive. am i mssing

Questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression
Hi all, any ideas? Especially point n.1 (no hardlink when sending the same email to multiple addresses) confuse me a bit. Searching in old messages I even stumbled on some users stating that, using Dovecot LMTP server, they achieved what I want (one messagge, multiple hardlinks), but I am _already_ using LMTP with no avail... Doubt about replacing alt storage disks
Hello, I have a working setup of dovecot 2.2.19 on centos 6. The mailbox format is mdbox. I've configured primary and alt storage. Now I want to replace the disk of the alt storage only. Broadly my plan to change it is as follows : 1. Mount the new disk on a temporary server. 2. Rsync data only from alt storage to the new disk - while the original server is live. This may take a few days.

Documentation update
Hi guys, this page needs to be updated: https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation/Maildir#Control_files (link was from here: https://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation) Section 'Control files' is mentioning only 2 files but, in fact, Dovecot will store some additional files in CONTROL location: dovecot-uidvalidity dovecot-uidvalidity.* subscriptions (anything more?) Even more, page

converting from maildir to mdbox ?
I?m considering moving from maildir to mdbox, but don?t quite see how I should do the conversion with minimal downtime. Our userdb is ldap, and the we use this setting to point to the users maildirectory: user_attrs = mailMessageStore=mail=maildir:%$:INDEX=/indexes/%1u/%1.1u/%u,mailQuota=quota_rule=*:storage=%$ i.e. every user has a "mailMessageStore" attribute in LDAP that points to

Connecting to dovecot
Hi All, I've got a brand new dovecot installation. I'm new to dovecot, so please be gentle :-) Anyway, I'm getting some errors when I try to connect to dovecot. I've tried searching the web and haven't been able to find a lot of information. Here's the config info: # dovecot --version 1.1.2 # dovecot -n sudo dovecot -n # 1.1.2: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf base_dir:

Questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression
Hi Javier, thanks for your reply. I already checked SIS and, while interesting, is not what I want, because: 1) it can be difficult to restore a single message/attachment from a backup 2) only the attachments, and not the entire messages, are deduped. Message-based hardlinks really exists for a reason. The good news is that I found _why_ they are not working: it depends from how dovecot and
