Error message for .csv file
I would be grateful if anyone could tell me what the error message: Error in NN[i, 1:length(od)] <- od : subscript out of bounds means for a large .csv file containing gps coordinates. I am using package SPACECAP and have successfully run it with other .csv files but now keep getting this error message. I can't see anything wrong with the file which is simply three columns of data. I am

Small change to plot.xy
Hi everyone, Is there any reason why we should not automatically coerce a factor supplied as an argument to col in a plotting function? The following modification (to R-1.6.1) seems pretty harmless > plot.xy function (xy, type, pch = 1, lty = "solid", col = par("fg"), bg = NA, cex = 1, ...) { if (is.factor(col)) col <- codes(col)

diag()
I would like to suggest a slight modification to diag(). In the case where x is a matrix with both row names and column names the same, it would be reasonable if the resulting vector also had those names. I often use diag() on variance matrices, where this modification is helpful. The modification requires replacing if (is.matrix(x) && nargs() == 1) return(c(x)[1 +

replicating lists
Hi Everyone, At the moment it is not possible to replicate complex lists, but only simple ones: > rep(list(fred = 1:10), 10) # works fine > rep(list(fred = 1:10, happy = "squash"), 10) Error in rep(list(fred = 1:10, happy = "squash"), 10) : Unimplemented feature in rep There is nothing in ?rep that suggests that the latter should not work, and I think it would

dovecot, procmail and deliver
(Using dovecot 1.0 RC7 on Fedora Core 5) <scene set> Hitherto we have used UW-IMAP on a "farm" of Linux machines mounting NFS from a NetApp. (The UW-IMAP author doesn't like use of NFS, but with careful use of NFS mount arguments ('noac,actimeo=0' etc.) and trying to ensure that all activity for a given user takes place within one machine in the farm, we seem to

functions for flat file import/export + utilities
Dear R-Developers, please find attached a set of drafted functions for flat file import and export, partially extending existing functions, partially completely written as new code. I thought you might be interested in those functions and the accompanying utilities for padding and trimming. Main features are - supports several formats, i.e. fixed width and CSV (with one exception) - supports

variance of a scalar (PR#546)
I was surprised to find that the variance of a scalar, using var(), is NA. Surely this should be zero? rc7 bug? [Was: deliver LDA and INBOX location] (fwd)
Anyone had any thoughts on the item below? If the problem is with my config, I'd like to be guided towards how I might resolve it. If it is a bug in rc7, it would be good to fix it, and I'd be happy to beta-test. -- : David Lee I.T. Service : : Senior Systems Programmer Computer Centre : :

RC7: BUG! and patch [Was: Re: rc7 bug? [Was: deliver LDA and INBOX location] (fwd)] (fwd)
Could someone confirm, please, that this bug report and its proposed fix are being checked? 1. Is my analysis (message below) about right? 2. Is my proposed patch (attached) about right? 3. Is this being addressed for "rc8" (or whatever) and its successors? Many thanks. -- : David Lee I.T. Service : : Senior Systems Programmer

Pivoting in chol
Hi Everyone, I have modified my version of R-1.4.1 to include choleski with pivoting (like in Splus). I thought R-core might consider including this in the next version of R, so I give below the steps required to facilitate this. 1. Copied Linpack routine "dchdc.f" into src/appl 2. Inserted line F77_SUBROUTINE(dchdc) in src/appl/ROUTINES 3. Inserted "dchdc.f" into

New codes() methods
Hi Everyone, Can I suggest a couple of new `codes' methods. I know codes is a bit dodgy (at least, according to the comments in codes.factor), but for what it's worth I like to extract codes from data frames of factors, for which the following two functions (which operate recursively) are helpful: "codes.default" <- function(x) { if (is.list(x)) lapply(x, codes)

deliver LDA and INBOX location
(OS: Fedora Core 5; dovecot: 1.0 rc7) On a typical UNIX-like OS, the INBOXes are in "/var/spool/mail/" using the user identifier: so user 'fred' has INBOX "/var/spool/mail/fred". We have a well-established different convention which subdivides this, based on the last two digits of the uid: "/var/spool/mail/12/fred" (for fred's uid as something ending

hash argument of new.env()
Hi everyone, There is no mention in ?new.env (R-1.6.0) of what the effect of setting the hash argument of new.env() actually does. What does it mean in performance terms to say that "the environment will be hashed"? Thanks, Jonathan. -- Jonathan Rougier Science Laboratories Department of Mathematical Sciences South Road University of Durham

plot.formula and pch= (PR#149)
I'm not sure exactly where to point my finger with this one, but there is a nasty surprise to the unsuspecting user. There is no check on the length of the vector passed in the pch= argument to plot, it is just recycled as necessary: plot(1:10,1:10,pch=1:2) gives alternating circles and triangles. The nasty bits come up especially with plot.formula: x<-1:10;y<-1:10

.Alias and memory
In an effort to encapsulate my dependence on class in order to deal with oldclass/class in Splus I defined the functions tfclass <- class "tfclass<-" <- function(x, value){ class(x) <- value ; x } and also the function classed <- function(x, cls) {class(x) <- cls; x} This last allows me to end a function definition with ... classed(somecalc,

Problem with "missing" in "local" (PR#1241)
Hi everyone, I encountered unexpected behaviour when calling "missing" within a "local" environment, namely fred <- function(x, y) { x <- as.vector(x) local({ dontwantme <- 1:100 if (missing(y)) print("No \"y\" today") }) x } whereupon I get > fred(1:10) Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : "missing" illegal use of

tensor() function and sets
Hi Everyone, To complete the outer() and kronecker() functions in the base, may I suggest the following tensor() function, which allows the multiplication of arrays through sets of conformable dimensions. I am happy to write a help page if required. The code also needs a setdiff() function which prompts me to ask: what about simple set functions? I expect many of us have written our own

Inconsistent behaviour in solve (PR#805)
I find this a bit puzzling ... > solve(matrix(c(5, 2, 3, 1), 2, 2), c(Inf, 3)) [1] NaN Inf > solve(matrix(c(5, 2, 3, 1), 2, 2)) %*% c(Inf, 3) [,1] [1,] -Inf [2,] Inf I would expect the answer to be c(-Inf, Inf), so why has the -Inf been replaced by NaN in solve? Dimnamenames (PR#257)
I've just started digging into Andreas's old report: > a <- array(0,c(2,2,2)); > dimnames(a)<-list(hansi=1:2, pepi=c("a","b"), karli=3:4) > dimnames(a[,,1]) # losing component names [[1]] [1] "1" "2" [[2]] [1] "a" "b" Now, this would be fairly easily fixed (I think) which would also make it compatible with S3.
