R 2.9.2 crashes when sorting latin1-encoded strings

observed this behaviour both with the i386 and x86_64 builds, in the
R.app GUI as well as on the command line.
Here's a minimal example that reliably triggers the crash on my machine:

$KCODE = ''UTF8'' in environment.rb and by adding /u to regex expressions.
The only thing not working now is the ability to define a range of \x
characters in a regex.
So, this /^[a-zA-Z\xE4]*?&/u will validate that a string is allowed
to have an รค in it. Perfect.
But... this fails /^[a-zA-Z\xE4-\xE6]*?&/u

Transferring a dataset from WINXP to Mac - problems with umlauts

I have imported a German MS-Access database into R 2.14.1 by using RODBC on a WINXP-System. It runs with a Latin-1 encoding (codepage 1252). However, most of the work is done with a Mac (UTF-8 encoding) and the R-dataset has been transferred to the MAC. Here, umlauts are displayed as \x.. (i.e. \xe4 instead of ?). If I set the locale to Sys.setlocale(locale="de_DE.ISO8859-15"), umlauts are displayed as black diamonds.
Since it is awkward to enter \x-codes when I work with the dataset, I would rather use the umlauts. Is there a way?

[PATCH nbdkit v3 0/3] Add partitioning plugin.
The partitioning plugin patch is the same (except for rebasing).
However I have changed the first two patches based on feedback
received. In particular this fixes a very serious bug found by Eric
Blake in the current truncate filter.
