both MS hosts show the correct address for the WINS server in winipcfg (note
that the test set-up is not internet connected so I have used some IP addresses
which are outside the "private network" address space) However only the loca...

Samba PDC/Windows BDC
...PDC's gateway IP and was wondering if
there was a way to get ONLY the info I need from DHCP to the Win machine. To
attempt to clarify, when the PDC is up, it will assign its gateway IP to
the BDC (since it is a client normally), if the server should go down, I'd
just renew the BDC's IP(winipcfg), activate the DHCP server on the BDC and
use it until the problem is PDC is back up(renewing the clients as well, of
course).
If this is not possible with my setup, any suggestions will be investigated,
short of having to manually change the BDC.

ip_masq+dhcpd+samba+2nics
...ame workgroup didn't change it either..
Its odd that i cant telnet to the machine using its ip or its host name
from one of the win95 clients, but the machines are getting there
dynamicip from it. the DNS is set for our DNS server that knows about the
linux machine also.. also by doing a "winipcfg" i see that the win95
clients sees the DHCP server as our "external" ip not the "internal" one.
and i suspect that to be the cause ( related to the ip_alaising for dhcp).
Anyone have some clues or pointers as to where to look further?

Configuring Samba
I am still having some troubles getting samba to work.
I have installed samba and it seems to be fine from the server point of
view. However, my client can see the server in the Network neighborhood,
but I get network path not found.
The server and the client are on different sub-nets.
Both the client and the server are using DNS to resolve names. Both are
resolvable. They use FTP between

Bizarre multi-homed name resolution with nmbd?
...and the morpork light on carrot flashing.
Doing a netstat -rn on both machines, I saw a connection active from
vimes-morpork -> carrot-ankh... I'm sure the reason for the asymmetric
path will now be obvious!
Both the interfaces on carrot were DHCP configured and, amusingly, I
could use WINIPCFG to release/renew the morpork interface on carrot and
the routing would go the ankh interface way! ;)
Anyway... what I was inquiring about was: does nmbd do any address
sorting like named to avoid this happening? I'm a bit confused about how
I managed to get a connection across subnets in...

RedHat Linux 6.1, Samba, & DHCPD problems
..., configured it (see config file below) and started it.
Then I reconfigured the laptop to automatically get it's address,
rebooted it, logged on, and then inserted the network card. I was very
happy when the laptop was able to get it's IP address properly (I
checked with ipconfig.exe, and winipcfg.exe). However, I then got a
message on the laptop which said that the file server was unable to see
the laptop???? I checked the Samba logs, and there was NO indication
of any activity.
So, I restored the laptop back to a static IP, and rebooted, and it
worked properly.

Browsing works, only Samba servers show up
Hi,
I have a Samba 2.2.1a PDC-based
network, everything works great.
Browsing works fine too, but ONLY
the Samba servers show up.
I have a PDC w/ WINS and 2 Samba
file servers
I can do a search for other
computers, but they just aren't
being listed from win2k and 98
machine's network neighborhood.
I put browse list = yes, but no
dice. Any ideas?
thanks,

Domain logins via PPP?
...tup like this: Dialup Networking->(connection
name)->Properties->Server types shows that the the logon to network box is
checked. For the protocols, only TCP/IP is checked. The TCP/IP settings
are to get the IP address and name server addresses from the server. A look
at ipconfig/All or winipcfg reports that the IP address is 192.168.69.81,
netmask is 255.255.255.0, DNS server is 192.168.69.1 (which is correct --
DNS server is on my firewall), and the WINS server is 192.168.69.2.
I have tcpdumped the ppp interface on the server. I see that when the

multiple subnet browsing problem
I having difficulty getting browsing to fully work across two subnets. The
subnets (having private addresses - 192.168.x.0) are connected by Linux
boxes (RH6.1, one for each subnet) functioning as firewall, IP masquerade
and router. On one subnet (call this one LEFT), there is an NT4.0 server as
the PDC (also running WINS and DHCP) along with 50 or so clients and other
servers (NT, Win9x) in

Confusion over how to configure WINS
We have a network of about 24 remote site all connecting to our home
office across a mixture of private frame relay and VPN across the internet.
In order to simplify our life, and at the same time, reduce the amount of
non critical and chatty traffic transversing the WAN links during business
hours, we are putting servers at each remote to do DHCP, DNS, WINS, and file
and print sharing. From the

WINS problem
Greetings Earthlings:
I finally convinced the LAN guy to remove NetBlooie from our
windoze clients. I also made the samba box the local and master
browser (we have no NT boxes at the moment). Local browsing seems
to have gotten faster (at least Mr. Robinson's Network Neighborhood
resolves faster). However, our LAN is isolated (windoze clients

samba3: need to wait 3 minutes before login
Hi,
at our local computer pool in the school we've a samba3
server and about 40 winnt-4.0 workstations. the main
problem is, that the workstations have to wait for
about 3 minutes after they started, before a user can
login. in other words: the computer starts and if you
try to login then immediatly you'll get "domain manos
not available" or something like this. but if you wait

Dial in accounts
Eric,
I am busy trying to grasp the browse list concept. We have subnets and
dial-in accounts. From what I have read you may have to get your Linux
box act as aWINS server and have to dial-up user use the wins server to
resolve names on the brows list. The browse list is updated every 12-15
minutes ao your dial-up account might not show upat first. This has
caused me some trouble at first as I

Domain unavaliable
First off, I'd like to give all the people involved
with the development of Samba a big thanks. I'd have
to say that Samba is probably the single most important
piece of software that we run in our research lab.
I'd also like to say that I have had so few problems that
I probably haven't written about one in 3 years.
With that being said, I'm having problems with my
