Stranger Behavior -maybe not
Hello everyone, When I run a for loop I noticed that the looping variable gets assigned the last value in the loop: For example, if I let h=200, and I run for(i in 1:h), i gets the value 200. What's wrong here? -- -Tony [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Odd failure of smbd to start from init.d - CentOS 5.4
Hi, We've got a fresh CentOS 5.4 box, and the only glitch so far is that /etc/init.d/smb doesn't start smbd. It claims it does - shows "[ok]" - but only nmbd ends up running. Even setting a higher debugging level in the smbd flags, nothing logs or shows on the console as to why smbd is immediatly quitting. To make it stranger, doing this works fine: . /etc/init.d/functions

Infinte loop in RtlPrefetchMemoryNonTemporal under Windows
I have been trying to track down a problem that occurs when my GPLPV drivers give Windows a packet with the NdisPacketTcpChecksumSucceeded flag set. The problem is that the machine locks hard. After some tedious work with the debugger, I have found that Windows makes a call to a routine called RtlPrefetchMemoryNonTemporal, which looks like this: 8088e579 mov eax, dword ptr

WEBRick process not responding after few hours (rails 1.1.6 on linux)
the rail application I have developed (really simple one 2 -> db tables with no more than 100 records) works perfectly in development / production mode on my windows desktop (win200 pro + mysql + ruby 1.8.2 + rails 1.1.6). when deploying the application on linux (ruby 1.8.4 , rails 1.1.6 the same mysql as on windows) everything *seems* to work fine. well atleast for the first few hours. the

Running Apache sites as separate users
I had a recent request to improve security on my web servers by having each website use a different user to run the hosting service. So example1.comhas it's own Apache instance running as apache1 and then example2.com has its own instance of Apache as apache2. Is this even possible or realistic? I understand the idea of how that would be secure, much like creating a virtual machine to

The Ghost Queue of Summer
Hi: I have a problem with my Samba print queue, I think. I started a print job back in June and the queue seemed to get overloaded. Since that time I can't print to that printer through the Samba queue. Even stranger, every couple of days random pages print out from that job! This has been going on all Summer. I would like to clear the queue and get Samba's printing queues up and

Strange glm(, quasipoisson) error
Dear list, I have recently encountered an odd error when running glm(dep~indep, quasipoisson): while, with a subset of my data, I could get a perfectly reasonable model, once I include all of my data (17K+ observations, 29 variables), I get the following error: Error in if (any(y < 0)) stop("negative values not allowed for the quasiPoisson family") : missing value where

choosing a UPS (in the United States)
I do a bunch of "kindness of strangers" hosting in my basement and my three kVA apc unit died recently. In looking around, it looked like Belkin was a reasonable low-end replacement for a few machines. Then I read this mailing list after I purchased one and was gifted another. It looks like people don't like Belkin. ;-)...

Celebrating Centos 6.0 Day World-wide
...d computers chain store (with often too high prices), Staples, about the joys and benefits of using Linux, specifically Centos, over M$ Windoze. May I suggest that all us very grateful users of Centos make 6 copies of Centos 6.0 (either i386 or/and X64) and hand then out to friends, colleagues or strangers (unknown members of the public) who might be interested in trying Centos ? A modification of this idea could be to distribute "Live" versions of Centos that can run without altering a computer's hard disk(s). Centos is great - and I should have started using it years ago - so too is...

ActionMailer stopped working after upgrade to Rails 1.1
Hello, I am using implicit e-mail templates to send HTML messages. I had no problems till I have upgraded to Rails 1.1. Now the deliver_xxx method just fails without *any* error message. No error or whatsoever (both in development and production environments) exist in logs. Stranger than that, a blank page is being displayed (according to logs, 0 length response, with 200 OK code). I googled for
