Rid me of this boot GUI
One of these days, RedHat might actually run me off!!!! AAAARGH!!!! Can anyone tell me how to get CentOS 4 to simply boot to the console in text mode? If I wanted a stinkin' GUI I would have installed winders! Now, my KVM and 25 foot cord is just too long to send a GUI signal across the room and I'm missing 50% of the screen.. striped vertically.. at about 1/8th inch spacing. Not really good enough to see what I'm in nor what the crap I'm doing. I...

The no-framework PHP MVC framework
"The no-framework PHP MVC framework" http://toys.lerdorf.com/index.php?url=archives/38-The-no-framework-PHP-MVC-framework.html Yuck! What spaghetti code. I can''t ever imagine preferring that to Rails. Joe -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Changing Console Display Settings
...ching on the system, I can't seem to find where or if there is a way to change the default console display settings. I sure would be nice to go to a higher resolution so to speak. Can anybody point me in the right direction on where to look? Note, these systems are all server installs.. no stinkin' GUIs. ;) Thanks, John Hinton

domain language?
...has gone a long way towards producing readable sentences - "should_contain" instead of "assert ... contains?" etc. How to go the extra step? How to improve my RSpec style? How to get rid of @browser, and have a true domain language, without writing a private function for every stinkin'' operation on my website? Oh, and soon my tests must use 2 or more browsers, too... (I suspect I can''t just cram in Systir, because it has a competing test runner. And I have a bug report on ZenTest that I don''t want to work around yet.) -- Phlip http://c2.com/cgi...

OT: Why are so many using Samba to authenticate as PDC??
I need to get some feedback on some good reasons for incorporating Samba into a corporate environment that runs mostly Microsoft, but also Sun, and some linux systems. Can anyone here that have used Samba for more than a few months elaborate on some of their reasons for choosing to use Samba? Advantages and disadvantages are also welcomed. Many thanks in adcance.

Metadata
Having not been reading the list regularly for the past few months, I've been reading through for the past few days trying to catch up. I was wondering what the current state of Vorbis metadata was. Has anything been agreed upon as far as how metadata is to be stored? It seems every time this was brought up before it turned into a large debate and nothing was ever resolved. Tony Arcieri

metacity theme support in gnome-window-decorator
I played a little bit yesterday with adding metacity theme support to gwd and it looks like it's not going to be very hard. Hopefully I'll have it working in the next couple of days. What I've done is to rip out all the parts of the metacity code that is required for theme support (boxes.c, gradient.c, theme-parser.c, theme.c, util.c). Ideal would be if we could put this part of

how to generate a random data from a empirical, distribition
...of situations involving independent, identically distributed random samples or the popularity of ordinary least-squares regression.) Today, most of us have more computing power at our desks than entire mainframe computing centers had a few decades ago. So in many instances, we don't need no stinkin' complex formulas anymore. If you suspect the distribution corresponds to one of the mathematically studied distributions, why not fit a curve to a plot of your data points and see if it looks familiar? Then do some kind of goodness-of-fit test to see if the theoretical distribution is a r...

Need Help Getting Windows XP To Use Samba Properly
Hi everyone, new to the list. My apologies if this issue has already been covered, but I am having the following problem with Samba: Using Windows XP as a client, I am trying to see a Solaris system as a server. Solaris is running Samba 2.4.2, and Windows 2000 sees it as a server without any problems. Windows XP, however, generates the error "The network name is no longer
