static linking
Has anyone tried or had success statically linking Asterisk? I'd like
to do this to deploy to smaller boxes that don't have the toolchain
and libraries to build the thing.
I've tried using statifier (at sf.net) which claims to take a dynamic
executable and transform it into a static executable. It seemed to
work on my box, but when I tried it on the target box it did this:

Illegal instruction
[root@0060ef21765a /]#
I've also tried messing with the Makef...

Can R (without GUI) be compiled with static linking?
I have a potential client that is considering R for data analysis and
visualization modules within a larger framework. The host systems run either
Solaris or a version of Linux.
One of their requirements (hard or soft?) is that each module in the
framework be compiled with statically linked libraries into a standalone
binary that can be run from the command line.
I intend to recommend using R

R under Ubuntu 8.10 / Wine
It looks as if installing R under Ubuntu 8.10 is going to be much more
complicated than I thought it was going to be.
I hadn't realized that it would depend on installing so many other
packages (about 23, it seems), many of which also have their own
dependencies.
So I wondered whether all of these are really essential, and whether
there is a single package anywhere that includes them all for
