Samba 3.4.2 with Solaris ZFS Snaphots
Hi, I'm trying to make samba working with Solaris ZFS Snaphots. Solaris 10 is running on a x64/X86 box which is both Samba (3.4.2) server and Zfs server. I created home/delaye filesystem with home zfs pool. # zpool list NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT home 1.98G 2.60M 1.98G 0% ONLINE - home/delaye 2.47M...

Snaphot stability issues on 6.3
One of our servers, running a bunch of jails, has issues when doing nightly dumps only if snapshots are enabled. This box was running 5.X and has been upgraded over time to 6.3. When running 5.X, we attempted to use snapshots on dump (-L) which resulted in almost nightly system hangs during the dump. We ran 6.X for months with no stability issues, backing up nightly w/o snapshots. Took the

GPL license file missing from cvs snaphot
I noticed that the GNU GPL file ( usually named COPYING ) is missing from the nightly cvs snapshot, at least in the one I downloaded on may 12 2000 13:45 UTC. There is neighter an URL or regular address to obtain the license text. The README file states that the text is included with the source, but it isn't. Snapshots and backing store
Hi, There''s something really bizarre in ZFS snaphot specs : "Uses no separate backing store." . Hum...if I want to mutualize one physical volume somewhere in my SAN as THE snaphots backing-store...it becomes impossible to do ! Really bad. Is there any chance to have a "backing-store-file" option in a future release ? I...

OCF2 and LVM
Does anybody knows if is there a certified procedure in to backup a RAC DB 10.2.0.3 based on OCFS2 , via split mirror or snaphots technology ? Using Linux LVM and OCFS2, does anybody knows if is possible to dinamically extend an OCFS filesystem, once the underlying LVM Volume has been extended ? Thanks in advance Riccardo Paganini

snapshot-create-as for a single disk not all disks
Hi everyone! Is there any way to create snaphot for a single disk of a virtual machine. As I konw, "virsh snapshot-create-as domain_name snapshot_name --disk-only" traverses all block devices to create snapshot. However I don't want to create snapshot except for root partition. The version of qemu and libvirt I used is as follow...

If VM boots, create another snapshot. When it fails, reverse to previous snaphot and divide that segment into 5-10 smaller pieces, rinse and repeat. -- Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Love is in the Air) PL Computers Serbia, Europe StarOS, Mikrotik and CentOS/RHEL/Linux consultant

Re 2: Sorry to waste your time - I will stop using rsync
Peter, One other thing. The first two times it crashed I erased the file tree created by rsync so that the snaphot started from scratch again. Each of these two times it got to exactly the same file: usr/lib/locale/es_CO/LC_COLLATE when it crashed. That was when I stopped rebuidling and re-cabling my hardware, because I saw a determinate pattern in the crashes... (sheepish) should have said that before .....

Backing up Xen vm's
Dear All, because the organization I work for has to enter the 21 century eventually, and encouraged by the the excellent wiki's available, I'm giving Xen a try. I' ve tested setting it all up but I have this question concerning making backups. i' ve noticed that virsh snaphot-create does not work, and googling this, I can find many posts describing making backups with rbackup, lvm , dd, .... The thing is there is not always a date with these posts and articles, so before I dig into this: Is this still the way this is done, or is there now a more straightforward way...

move domain member server to new hardware
...about the fqdn in linux itself? I can't change that hostname on the > old server until I deactivate it. It should stay some kind of fallback > server (with another fqdn and IP) later. Could I join the domain with another name and IP now ... to be able to test things (introducing btrfs snaphots this time) with all AD-features, but on a "test name"? And then leave the domain, change FQDN/IP and rejoin? I want to avoid any issues coming from doing something wrong NOW. That server should be productive for some years from now (sure).

I would create a 'test' machine and join that, once you are sure that everything is working correctly (and you have documented the procedure), just create a new...

btrfs send & receive produces "Too many open files in system"
.... The btrfs filesystem /mnt/adama-docs sits on top of lvm2 logical volume, which sits on top of cryptsetup Luks device which subsequentely sits on top of mdadm RAID-6 spanning a partition on each of 4 hard drives (I know that it is sub-optimal setup). The backups/20130101-192722 is a read-only snaphot which I estimate contain ca. 100GB data. The /mnt/tmp/backups is btrfs multidevice raid10 filesystem, which is based on 4 cryptsetup Luks devices, each live as a separate partition on the same 4 physical hard drives that ultimately make the /mnt/adama-docs. Both btrfs filesystems are mounted wi...

DirectShow PushSource with theora encoder and Ogg muxer filters
Hi all, I am trying to test DirectShow PushSource example from the SDK with Theora encoder and Ogg muxer (DirectShow filters of course) by using GraphEdit tool. My goal is capturing the screen as video by taking snaphot bitmaps continuosly (what PushSource eaxmple does) and giving them to the Theora encoder through the DS pipeline (next goal is transmitting this video **). My DirectShow graph is like this: PushSource Filter --> Theora Encoder --> Ogg Muxer First of all, Theora encoder filter did not acce...

Have an idea about ZFS improvements - step to the user. Is it actual?
Hi, I have an idea about improvements of ZFS from the one side and improvements for of the GUI interface from the other side. Let me describe my idea. >From the one side we have an ZFS on-th-fly snapshots, and starting from OpenSolaris 2008.11 we have TimeSlider user feature based on ZFS snaphots. So, we made a big step to the user. But from the other side we still have in GUI interface "old" Move-To-Trash behaviour: this is usual mv command when user delete files on he''s ZFS partition and copy+delete commands for all other partitions. So when user''s home is rp...
