call "load balancing"
Hello All, Wondering what sort of real world mileage people are getting out of different internet connecions - i.e. different DSL connection speeds, cable modems, etc... Is it reasonable to hope to carry 10 - 15 concurrent calls on a 768K DSL? I'm not talking about theoretical BW or looking for any difinitive absolute guarantee... With DSL and Cable - there is no guarantee, so I'm

Bug? IE, getElementsByClassName and "length"
So, I have this form/datagrid thing. I want to have a button that clears the fields (not a reset, which would set them to the default state, I want them blank.) For various reasons, getByClassName seemed the best way to deal with this. Everything was fine on Moz/Firefox. Safari seems fine. But IE... Some detective work later, it seems that the problem is caused by *another* field on the page.

Removing intermediate variables in calculation
...#39; } notify{"extracted int_webapp_context_path \"${int_webapp_context_path}\" from url \"${baseurl}\"": } } # use $int_webapp_context_path in the .erb template file My question - this use of $int_webapp_context_path and $extracted_url_path looks a bit shabby. But I didn''t find a way to use conditional assignments to remove these intermediate variables and either: 1. Assign the value I want to $webapp_context_path if it''s not set yet. 2. Or at least get rid of the $extracted_url_path Is there a nicer way to achieve the above? Thanks...

...nerate the variance for the statistic like this.. # Shame the 'mean' function dosn't work with boot mean.x <- function(xx,ii) mean(xx[ii]) # Don't know how (or why) to pick a value for this. nboot <- 1000 # The 10 or so observations (in this case) boot.sub <- boot(data=shabby.sub$a, statistic=mean.x, R=nboot) # Variance of the statistic over the 1000 replicates my.var.t <- var(boot.sub$t) # t: A matrix with 'R' rows each of which is a bootstrap replicate # of 'statistic'. Blank Machine Again.
After a bit of looking around, I realise that my initial descision to go for Fedora Core 3 may have been a bit premature, (I read that some experienced users are having issues with this version) so I'm starting again. I just tried Xorcom Rapid, but it looks bloody complicated, and fairly stripped back. Which is the simplest (and most supported / used) distro / asterisk version to use from

Asterisk Performance 350 Concurrent Channels Working Nicely
...nce increase, BUT, using 425 + channels gave very inconsistent results, choppy audio, calls dropped, no audio, call setup time slowed. Good results below that mark, but not enough to warrant using full time. I'd rather build for stability and reliability than for all-out performance. Not too shabby, I'm very happy with this setup. What kind of [RAID] system works best?

RAID 5 at about $2200 for > 12 Gigabytes (using 6 Gig Seagates). Not too shabby! A caveat, though, about speed vs capacity: RAID 5, when writing, is roughly as fast as a single disk. Reading, it's a factor of how many disks you have. I usually estimate read speeds of 7200 rpm disks as (number of disks * 560 KB/S), so with three drives in raid 5, read speed is 2*560...

Top RubyForge Downloads
...ooking at this, I discard the top two entries -- the first because that''s Ruby itself, and the second because Win32 Utils is broken up into *lots* of packages that are downloaded separately and this skews the statistics. This means that FreeRIDE is the #1 download, and wxRuby is a not-too-shabby #4 (especially given its current, immature state). Curt PS I still want to do a wxRuby rendering plugin for FreeRIDE, but I can''t realistically see starting on that until next year.

CentOS VPN server for iPhone
...working very well for me. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn't have (yet?) an OpenVPN client, so I'm forced to work with what's available. The options are: L2TP, PPTP and IPSec. If you were to install a VPN endpoint on CentOS, which protocol would you prefer? The condition is to avoid shabby VPN servers that make the system less secure. I've seen some PPTP servers for Linux in the past but I was not impressed with their security track record. I'm not necessarily talking about crypto, I'm talking about the way the application is written. Another condition is ease of inst...

help with permissions
...ld just patch the thing to introduce a new option "nogperm" that assumes writing is okay if the group matches a group of the local user. I think this thing is broken anyway. With all the complexity of the samba product itself, it seems the kernel module is often the thing that is most shabby. Does anyone have any ideas here?

R's IO speed
R-devel now has some improved versions of read.table and write.table. For a million-row data frame containing one number, one factor with few levels and one logical column, a 56Mb object. generating it takes 4.5 secs. calling summary() on it takes 2.2 secs. writing it takes 8 secs and an additional 10Mb. saving it in .rda format takes 4 secs. reading it naively takes 28 secs and an

Design changes are done in Fedora
...se you were wondering, yes, that massive shell script did require some adjustment to move it from EL5 to EL7. It took me a day or two, during which time I was also working on portability differences in the rest of the software. A few days of work to get back on track for the next 7 years; not too shabby. Look, I doubt I?m any happier about how they moved my cheese than you are. I?ve just chosen to go hunt down the cheese and hack a few blocks off, instead of yelling about how they shouldn?t have moved it. >> Software is ?pure thought-stuff,? to quote Fred Brooks.
