migrate existing Unix password to sambapassword
Hello -- Our existing Unix system has more than 500 users. The system currently uses OpenLDAP to authenticate users. We just added dozens of PCs running Windows to the network. We are going to set up the existing Unix server as a samba PDC server such that the users can log onto either their Unix account or Windows account. It seems a good idea to allow the users have the same password for

howto sync unix passwd & samba passwd?
...st be entered in stdin. I also tried smbpasswd -s option but it asks passwd in stdin. Is there a way that I can use the command smbpasswd plus the user password in one line? Also, I read about mksmbpasswd.sh and test it but it did not work at all. My smb.conf contains: smb passwd file = /etc/samba/sambapassword and did: cat /etc/passwd | grep test | /usr/bin/mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/sambapassword Is there a way for me to sync the userpassword and smbpasswd? Help me please. -Iris Lames

cant login with my samba password only with my linux password
...trange problem with my samba server. When I try to connect with my (Windows)client and samba ask for the password, it's only accepting my linux-user password, not my samba-user password (set with smbpasswd and as root with smbpasswd <user>). And now the strange about it. When i change my sambapassword with smbpasswd, and try to login from my client, then the samba-user password is accepted. But after a reboot of my samba server, the server accepts only the linux-user password. I have to (re)set the samba-user password again with smbpasswd and only after that, I can login with the samba-user pass...

password change on WinXP
...it work. There is field called 'log on to' which defaults to local computer name (for example 'MYXP (this computer)'). If user changes 'log on to' value to name of our samba server or workgroup name and completes rest of the fields then passwords are changed on server side (sambapassword and linux password) but local password remains the old. On the other hand if the 'log on to' field value is local computer name, then only local password is changed (not samba). Is there any way to combine the process so that passwords on both sides are changed (server and client)? Is ther...

password syncronization
Dear friends we have the following problem. We have Operating system=OpenBsd installed computer and an other one with windows 98 when we change the password via smbpasswd myname ... then we have the following problem. My sambapassword is really changed. Since when I try to communicate samba server through windows 98 installed computer I see there is no problem. (Since we can see the shared documents.) But when I check whether the unix password is also changed or not I see it is not changed. Hence the two passwords are not sync...

When I substitute a slave as the passdb backend the the referral is followed, entries in the LDAP master are made (including sambaPassword entries), and replication back to the slave happens. But when the workstation is rebooted it not possible to logon to workstation using a domain account. The error is: The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in its primary domain is missing or the pa...

Netscape samba schema needs updating!
Hi, This one is for the samba team i think... Intro... Im using Sun One Directory Server 5.2 as my LDAP, so i used the samba-schema-netscapeds5.x schema, also samba 3.0.8. I tried to change my "sambapassword" on a windows client, however i was getting errors saying i didnt have permission even tho sambaPwdCanChange was set to 1, so i looked in the log.smb and found the error was a object class violation. Then i looked at my LDAP error logs and found samba was trying to update an antribute call...

exop vs md5
WHat is the significance to Samba of pam_password exop vs pam_password md5 in ldap.conf? The reason I ask is that, wherever possible, I prefer to use the vendor supplied tools for manipulating config files. With Fedora 3 it's system-config-authentication and it doesn't give you the option of exop. You either enable MD5, which puts pam_password md5 in ldap.conf, or disable it, which puts

Password Aging Policies - SAMBA
I am new to SAMBA. I am using it with LINUX and I love it! Nice change from you know who. I am sorry if this is a lame question, but I am setting up a Primary Domain Controller and a Backup Domain Controller. All the clients are Windows 2K or XP. I need the clients to reset their passwords every 30 days. I am having a hard time locating a procedure to set this feature. LINUX has 'chage'

Transfering Machine Accounts / MACHINE.SID
I have a Samba 2.2.7 PDC, and I am now trying to set up a new 3.0.1 server. I want this machine to act as a BDC initially and replicate all the accounts over. When I followed the howto it said to use smbpasswd -S to transfer the machine SID and then to replicate the smbpasswd file to the new server. This has caused two major problems: 1) the smbpasswd command does not support the -S option

However, I am trying to figure out the best method for allowing users to change their ldap samba account password. What is the best method to allow end users to change their LM/NT passwords for Samba via LDAP? Should
